It doesn't make any sense. Your ears begin to ring as you look at Elisabeth, something akin to tinnitus. It grows louder immediately, as it reaches a crescendo...

Deafening silence. You hear Elisabeth say: "Power isn't given, Matias, it's taken."

The memory replays with only light distortions, the images rendered soft and fuzzy by the filter of the subconscious mind, but the lightness of the shared moment - not unlike a feather - is undercut with something sharp, heavy, unmistakable.

Matias' mouth does not move, but you hear all the same: "I AM A GOD."

He knows, part of her dreads, while another part of her insists and warns, No. He remembers.[break][break]

She meets his eyes, heartbeat pounding in her chest. It's so difficult to do anything but breathe, but even that seems a trial. She can't make her face obey her; the feigned pleasantry of the night has been erased and replaced with wide-eyed terror.[break][break]

"And what would that be?"[break][break]

A sense that she is staring down an impossibly high cliff seizes her, though she knows all she is looking at is a man who has yet to become a god.[break][break]

The red shard reflection fades from her eyes but the absence of it lets the mind wander. The dark pupils are a negative space, and yet, you find yourself seeing the visage of Kyle in them, looking warm and happy. Trusting. Was that you, here, before? Have you been any of those things?

If you choose to look away, somehow, you will be aware of some Kyle or Kyle-adjacent imagery in your peripheral, or behind your eyelids. Your mind is clinging to something represented by Kyle, but what?

From over Matias' shoulder, you can see movement. A man, staggering, a hand held to his throat. His face is distorted and blurry, but his stature is familiar. He steps closer, and it is rendered all the more clear: Édouard Bortiforte. He comes closer, closer to Matias with a hand outstretched - to warn him? to move him aside to get to you? - but he dissolves, like acid, to the ground. The puddle that remains is iridescent like spilled oil catching the light. The liquid slowly eeps towards Matias and you.

The revisiting of this memory is tampered with far older ones, seeping in to taint what you have - had? - here. The movement of the puddle is low but no less a draw to your eye like a predator, but what is the danger your mind is warning of?

Before she can speak, she sees it. The phantom manifests where shadows meet the edges of dying light, clutching at his throat as he staggers forward. She remembers the wedding band on his left hand.[break][break]

Her throat remembers how it felt to have that metal press against her neck.[break][break]

By the time she stands up and screams, he's nothing but an oil spill that shimmers in a pool of iridescence upon the ground.

"You knew what I was!" she shouts back, the people all around them having fled in the wake of some horrible storm that crackles overhead with foreboding. "You either didn't want to see the truth, or you were arrogant enough to think you could change me."[break][break]

This man isn't supposed to hate her yet, but he does. She doesn't even question it, because they always do, eventually.[break][break]

The ink-like stain on the ground swells like a puddle before rainwater, darkening and deepening into a sinkhole that seems eager to swallow her whole. She takes a step back, both from him and from the remains of the man he mirrors, and wonders how long she has before either punishes her for the crimes she's committed against them.[break][break]

"You already had love from other women, and you threw it away like it was nothing. What you wanted from me was power."[break][break]

The Red Shard in her pocket feels heavy, weighed down by guilt and by shame until she lifts it up, taunting him.[break][break]

"Will you deny this is what you want? Even now, will you deny you desire this more than you've ever desired me?"

Your hands begin to go numb. Your vision blurs, corrects, then blurs. The world feels uneven. The world feels... wrong. You feel sturdier than the world. You feel more real than the earth beneath you. Something is wrong. It isn't this conversation, it isn't this memory, it isn't -

Your vision corrects. Your heart is racing. Sensory input seems increased, multiplied. The sound of her voice, the smell of the food, the taste of food turned rotten on your tongue, but you feel nothing. Your hands are numb. You feel disconnected from the earth beneath you, almost like you are floating instead.
