Swords & Myth

Mission: Intrepid Sword, ft.

Gwyar didn't have a wealth of time available to him.

He had his police duties, his gym leader duties, his Project Sapphire duties, his citizen of mossdeep duties... nevermind his personal training time.

This fell squarely in his personal training time, which was why the sun didn't appear to have risen yet as they stepped into the Mossdeep Community Stadium.

The floodlights came alive as he sauntered towards the center of the battlefield, slowly going through his warm up stretches as he did.

"That's quite the tale, Sheriff." He said after a moment, taking in the abridged retelling of the events that took place in Avalon.

No need to speak of what happened with Regice after.

He lowered himself to the ground, stretching his hamstrings whilst smiling at Navy.

"I can only bow my head in the face of your achievements." He said. "Zacian is a truly heroic matron. Her recognition— nay, her blessings, are something few, if any, will ever attain."

Of course the galarian knight would think that.

The Galarian’s summary of his tale brings a smile to the lips of Hoenn’s first and only knight. Chivalry, and chivalric weapons, are not things he has favored. Swordplay and other antiquated ways of fighting have always seemed pointless to him. Best to use his own fists, a gun, or his Pokemon.[break][break]
That wouldn’t do. Not now. Not with the powers bestowed upon him by Zacian, who seems more a sword sister than a true patron in the style of Groudon or Palkia. He must master the arts of war, and master them quick, lest he not be ready when the horns are sounded and the fight called.[break][break]
Navy’s smile betrays his gratitude as well. Mossdeep is one of Hoenn’s civic centers. This is not Gwyar’s homeland, but he has taken this crucial place under his care. Even still, the older knight makes time for his young kin.[break][break]
You were there. Damn good blacksmith.” Navy stretches as well, though his aerobics are the sort a boxer might favor. “Made my squire a halberd and an axe for me. Zar- Zacian said you were as fine a smith as the one who forged her sword.” High praise, from his ancestor. Some part of him wants to tell Gwyar about the woman Zacian had been, so long ago. Though Gwyar and Zaria might not be related by blood, something else binds them through generations: a calling to serve with the sword.[break][break]
Best, he thinks, that Gwyar know the legend of Zacian rather than the truth of Zaria, known by her friends as Cyan.[break][break]
He draws Ascalon, Blade of Promised Victory. It is his sword as much as it is his sword sister’s. Its form at present is that of a longsword, comfortably wielded in one hand. In the modern age, even a neophyte might know the various forms a sword might take. He can work through all of them with Gwyar, find his style, focus on his strengths.[break][break]
So, how do we start?” He tries to hold the blade correctly. Even without Gwyar’s input, he makes a few adjustments. The crossguard lines up with his knuckles, edge pointed at his opponent. “Kind of worried ‘bout sparring with real steel.

Swords & Myth

Mission: Intrepid Sword, ft.

The blonde accepted the compliment easily, refraining from questioning the other.

How was he there? Zacian could talk? Who had forged her sword, and how?

"High Praise from higher places— But I can believe it." He said simply instead, smiling as ever. "I did become quite adept by the end there."

Having his arms compared to those of a hero of legend was humbling— not enough for him to actually be humble about it, though.

His eyes were drawn to the Sheriff's sword as it was drawn, curious at its azure edge. It exuded a presence unlike any other blade he had ever beheld, but it was not an imposing or intimidating. It was not akin to killing intent.

Rather, it was... inspiring.

Unlike his brother in arms' stance.

Gwyar gave his friend a wry look, quickly noting the experienced practicality behind his movements. As well as the nervous shifts.

"Steel is rarely needed in a spar. It's foolhardy, if anything." He admitted as he reached for the blade at his hip, slowly drawing the long sword in one smooth, uninterrupted motion. "But— I cannot lie. I am curious about Zacian's sword— Ascalon."

Every combat instinct in him told him this was a bad idea.

Unfortunately, as a both a swordsman and a smith, that inspiring Blade was inspiring a whole lot of bad ideas in him.

The blonde shifted smoothly to a two handed stance, blade pointed and projecting danger at the space directly before him.

"Come. If I get injured, that'll be my own fault."

His eyes assess Gwyar as they never have before. Since aligning himself with the angels, he has made a point of not sizing up his co-workers. Who could take who in a fight is a fruitless question, a matter of young masculine ego. It doesn’t matter who would win most of the time. Win or lose, Gwyar would still be his comrade.[break][break]
It’s different when he’s beckoned to come, with all that entails. Gwyar is a big man, and Navy has seen the elegance in his steps enough. When moving with purpose, Gwyar reminds him of a Meowth that has spotted a coin. There’s purpose there, and liquid grace.[break][break]
His arms, too. Navy remembers his time in underground rings, boxing to earn ends meet. Tall men had long arms, and long arms meant he could reach Navy when Navy can’t reach him. Stepping closer is a trap, especially when he holds steel.[break][break]
My funeral.”[break][break]
When he moves forward, he does so with a short nod and thoughtless movements. It is not that his motions are flawed. They are, in fact, technically correct. He stays limber, not allowing his feet to sit flat against the ground. He moves, and he lowers the blade. Both hands grip Ascalon before he can stop the instinct. Something spurs him forward, calls him to flick his blade up in an arc that starts on his right and ends high on the lefthand side.[break][break]

Swords & Myth

Mission: Intrepid Sword, ft.

"Hoh." Gwyar breathed out softly as the other advanced, fast.

Limber and agile, Hoenn's knight came, his lack of training obvious, yet not entirely a weakness.

Fencing training gave one tools for different circumstances; answers to different approaches. Foregoing it, or perhaps simply missing the chance for it, did not necessarily mean one was incompetent, nor incapable of finding their own effective answers to the circumstances before them.

Personal experience could carry one through many circumstances—

But.

The knight of the tundra seemed to fade back, both slow yet sudden, like an illusion.

Feet firmly on the ground, the flat of his sword descended upon his brother-in-arm's skull before the full threshold between them could be crossed, the distance having been lengthened precisely.

As the other man had suspected— range had been the most important factor.

For schools of swordsmanship were traditions going back hundreds, thousands of years.

Had a single lifetime been enough to surpass the combined efforts of countless interconnected ones seeking a unified goal, that single life could've been nothing but legendary— mythical.

Fuck!” He curses, more out of pain than frustration. The blow throws off his balance, sends him skipping a few steps forward before he can pull himself out of delirium. By the time he turns, he understands one truth: were this a real battle against the likes of , he would be dead thrice over. Once because the blow would not be delivered with the flat, twice as his footing faltered, thrice as he turned his back towards his opponent.[break][break]
You’re strong, man.” The words are heaved, spoken with a sheepish smile. Navy is no stranger to pain, not after the road he’s walked to become the Warrior. He’ll have to weather worse if he wishes to master the sword, fight the likes of The Devourer or The Harbinger.[break][break]
So, fighting down the pain, he falls into his stance once more. Owing to the bond he shares with his sworn sister, the pain already seems to hurt less. Getting used to just that one effect – the enhanced reflexes, the strength, his capacity to dull his own pain, will take time. Mastering all these many powers will be a quest that will take a lifetime, but they stand on the eve of war.[break][break]
Steel eyes fall to Ascalon’s glowing blue grace. They subtly raise to Gwyar’s sword. He marches forward, inclined to put a sudden theory to the test.[break][break]
The pain was a lesson. When he learned to box, he had to learn how to take a hit. He had to get used to the notion that he might get hurt. Accepting that is one of the fundamentals of martial arts, overcoming that fear.[break][break]
He moves with purpose, like a wolf towards a bear. Gwyar surrounds himself with a sharp steep arm, but what happens when that arm is directly attacked? He tests himself here, bringing his blade forward in an arc meant to bait out his peer’s blade, so that it might meet Ascalon.

Swords & Myth

Mission: Intrepid Sword, ft.

"Language." He said wryly, waiting for the younger man to gather his bearings.

"And you are being reckless." Gwyar said with a disapproving quirk of the lip.

Pain was a lesson for all martial artists, but the skilled swordsman was forced into a reality the skilled pugilist wasn't—

It only took a lucky (or unlucky) poke to kill someone.

When Navy moved next, Gwyar's response came swift.

Though there was an actual purpose behind this swing, the approach was still too simple— his sword moved to intercept, cutting through the air in a tight, elegant arc—

But the feeling of contact was almost alien. There was no resistance as steel met steel. This feeling was... A flash of old insight came, the face of his familiar Gallade briefly in focus.

Abruptly, the elegant cut turned awkward and strange as the blonde twisted his wrist and arm without warning, alarm flashing through his face as he stepped back.

The reaction was reflexive, but it had come too late.

Ascalon had already bit into his blade by the time he realized what had ocurred.

Clink! Clack echoed behind the duo as an awkwardly cut half of Gwyar's blade landed away from them, the knight's sudden wrench having sent it hurtling away.

Gwyar stared at it for a moment, before slowly turning his gaze back to his sword.

Due to his own last ditch efforts, what would've been a clean cut had finished its path at an odd angle, cutting a curve into the broken blade.

Slowly, the knight craned his head back and stared at the dawning sky, releasing a low sigh as he realized why the sheriff had looked so focused.

"This was a gift from my youngest, you know." He said, slowly moving to sheath it. "Haaah... Still. That's... surprising."

Impressive, even.

Much happens in not a whole lot of time. That, the sheriff thinks, is the essence of combat. Only with the luxury of replays can you see where the errors happened, how you arrive at the moment where time catches up and you realize you’re standing there with a blade in your hand. They’re both alive, though the blade is broken. Both bottom corners of his cheek flush red, just above the beard, heightened by Gwyar’s words.[break][break]
Sorry, man.” He turns his attention to the rising sun as well. Dawn always brings with it hope. Light has won out again against the darkness of the cosmos. Their planet keeps on spinning. Navy trusts Gwyar not to come upon him, especially with a sheathed sword. They’re not old men, but they’re seasoned enough to not patronize one another with the lesson of constant vigilance.[break][break]
Apple don’t fall far from the tree with smithing.” He returns Ascalon to its rawhead leather scabbard as well. They’re not done, not by a long shot, there’s still time before their responsibilities pull them away from one another. He goes to grab another sword. He does not insult the steel by thinking it plain, but it is a simple sword, not the stuff of legends.[break][break]
Can’t rely on that. Not with people like Cross on the other side.” Somehow, he knows a day will come when and he will cross paths. Navy is no swordsman, but his kinship with Zacian and knighthood clap the title upon him.[break][break]
Ever fought him?

Swords & Myth

Mission: Intrepid Sword, ft.

"It's no issue, Sheriff." Gwyar gave the other man a smile. "Though if my daughter had personally crafted this sword, a simple apology would perhaps not have been enough."

Needless to say, this one had been Commissioned. His daughters may have been infinitely more talented than him, but they could not have achieved such a level of mastery in only a year.

He approached the other half of his newly cut sword, staring at it for a moment and sighing before slipping it inside its sheath, followed by the rest of the sword.

He would have to repair it himself. No way he could ever let his daughter know he had gone and gotten it broken.

He returned back to the Sheriff, rubbing his chin thoughtfully whilst looking at the man's sword.

Cutting through a man's sword was... impressive, certainly, but certainly not impossible for a mythical blade, surely. Navy was now an avatar, after all.

"Yes, yes you can." Gwyar said simply, before lightly dragging his thumb across his neck. "As long as you do not waste the opportunity."

However skilled may have been, so long as he did not know of the properties of Navy's sword, Navy would get precisely one chance to kill him before he even realized what was happening.

At Navy's question, Gwyar smiled.

"Not that I can recall."

They had fought once at the HsT, but Gwyar had no way of knowing the man's identity back then. It had been quite a while since, too.

"Regardless..." The blone lowered his gaze towards the other's sword. "I've... questions that must be answered."

They would need to perform a lot of tests to answer them, too...

"The gym no longer serves our purposes." He decided after a moment. "Let us go to my forge."

Mmm.” Though he has weathered many a storm, that smile is cutting. Few things in life can match the fury of a loving father roused to such emotion. He envies Gwyar’s daughters for that. How differently would his own life have gone, had he had a father like Gwyar?[break][break]
His journey through Galar was nothing if not a reminder to not dwell on the past. So, he puts that thought aside, and instead dwells on the matter of Jayden and the one chance he has to make Ascalon’s bluntest advantage count. He remembers the sadness that played across Howard’s eyes at the sight of the false Jayden, dead in the snow outside Circhester. It was a rare man, who could get to look at him like that.[break][break]
Yeah, of course. We can do whatever you like.” There’d be time for more sparring later. There’d be ample opportunity to put his powers to the test. Perhaps, if they were very lucky, he’d even get to put on a show at Gwyar’s gym to display his mastery. Nothing would turn out a crowd like a match between Hoenn’s toughest gym leader and the Fighting Master of the Elite Four.[break][break]
Should’ve done this sooner, actually – gotten a smith to inspect the sword, I mean.

Gwyar shook his head, his gaze drawing back to the sword.

"That is but an effigy of the real Ascalon. There is not much for me to learn by analyzing a projection through the lens of a blacksmith." It was not made of any material that could be reproduced— it was an avatar's tool.

If they were to analyze Ascalon as a creation instead of a weapon, it would have to be the real article wielded by Zacian.

"But do not worry— the questions we'll be answering will be much, much more practical and immediately useful to you, Sheriff."

With a flick of the wrist, his Gallade popped into the scene, standing besides the two men.

"Gawain— please, do take us to the peak. We've much to do."

They were going stress test this bad girl.

Though Gwyar speaks with dignity befitting one of his station, there is a subtle implication to his words. Their task is severe. The hour is late. Yet, even still, his words carry in them what Navy thinks is a hint of mischief; the sort middle-aged men get up to late at night when they’ve had a few drinks in them and one of them says a sentence that starts with wouldn’t it be cool if.[break][break]
He doesn’t mind, and some part of him wishes they lived in a world where Gwyar and him could mess around like that. Instead, they’ll stress test his sword, push it to its limits, hone it, ready Ascalon for war. It must be ready, lest Mossdeep and soon all of Hoenn falls.[break][break]
The sensation of being teleported is a familiar one. It reminds him of the days where Roland, his brave Iron Valiant, wore the skin of a living thing and not cold steel. Navy exists in one place in one moment, and in the next he is somewhere else entirely. It seems to him a rapid transmutation of matter, vicious alchemy, and they stand upon fresh soil.[break]
Man.” He coughs. “I never get used to that.” Having never seen the gym leader’s forge, he looks around, trying to get his bearings in unfamiliar territory.

Swords & Myth

Mission: Intrepid Sword, ft.

Gwyar didn't comment, simply marching forward towards the shack in the horizon.

A graveyard of swords decorated the path towards the blacksmith's workshop, no sword quite the same as the one next to it, each created at a different stage of the blonde's accelerated development.

Galar had done wonders for knowledge and theory, but muscle memory could only be rebuilt through dedicated practice.

The blacksmith's gaze fleeted over each and every sword around him, before he eventually came to a stop before one, several meters away from the shack still.

Unbuckling his now broken sword and its sheath from his belt, he handed it over to Gawain, muttering something softly and thanking him as he disappeared into the shack—

Before firmly grasping the earlier sword and pulling it off the ground, swinging it through the air twice to get a feel for its weight and balance before turning to fully face Navy.

"Now then— let's resume our training, Sheriff." He said, holding the sword before himself with one hand. "First question— can you control whether Ascalon cuts through this sword?"

It was not a question of strength control.

There’s something lonesome about this place. Some blade of legend might be forged here, but it looks like the path leading to its creation would be a lonely thing. He wonders if he would have been forced to come here anyway, begging for Gwyar’s aid in Ascalon’s forging, if the tera crystals had not wrought their miracle from hopes and dreams.[break]
It doesn’t do well to dwell on that. He has his blade. Even now, its larger twin is sheathed across his sword sister’s back, far away on their little island at the edge of Hoenn. Dewford has a protector, and he feels comfortable leaving the place so long as she is there guarding the land. Between ’s Tapu Koko and Zacian, Dewford is in good hands.[break][break]
For now, he has to test a blade’s metal. Ascalon comes free once more, glowing anew. Its light is gentle, contrasting with the red land all around them. Squinting, Navy tries to will himself to [i[not[/i[ cut the blade as it flies in a precise arc through the air.[break]
…to no avail. Ascalon does not discriminate. It strikes decisively, as Zacian would want.[break][break]
Looks like that’s a no.

Without a second glance, the blonde discarded the now broken sword, chucking it over close to the shack.

No sense in wasting good steel.

"Perhaps." He nodded. "Could be a lack of control."

There was no way to know for certain at that point; Navy was the first of his kind.

"How do you summon your sword, Sheriff?" He asked as he marched to another sword, plucking it off the soil. "Walk me through the process."
