Zev had sent that text to Nenet earlier that afternoon, after the conclusion of the conversation between Team Rocket's leadership over encrypted channels. The promotion to God General had been a surprise, yet Walsh's and Monroe's reasoning was sound. Zev was the best candidate for the role, considering his former military experience, assistance with Kanto's takeover, and recent work as a Beast. [break][break]

He did not anticipate that his wife cared much. As he walked through the front door of her apartment, he expected to see her cooking in the kitchen, typing at her laptop, or reading her tablet on the couch. [break][break]

The crowd of Rockruff and one Yamper that greeted him was normal. Ignoring them, he removed his shoes and tossed his keys into a bowl by the door. "I'm home," he called out.

Nenet had spent a good hour puzzling over Zev's text. What was he promoted to? How did this happen? She was fairly sure there wasn't exactly a document she could consult on the exact nature of Rocket's hierarchy, but given Zev's position as a Beast where else was there for him to go?

Her confusion would have to wait, however. Work called, and it wasn't until some time later when she was back at home and once more staring at her phone did she come to the conclusion there wasn't much else she could do until Zev returned home to discuss this development.

What greeted him was scent of chocolate and coffee and the sight of a tiramisu topped with earthy matcha powder set upon the kitchen counter. Nenet appeared a short moment later, once the utter chaos of the puppies subsided.

Poking her head around the corner she greets as she wipes her hands on a dish towel, "Welcome back."
[break][break]
She tips her chin towards the kitchen, motioning for him to come as she ducks back in to hand the towel up, "Tell me about this promotion."

Though Zev was not a fan of sweets, the decadent aroma of the tiramisu piqued his curiosity. He followed Nenet into the kitchen, partially to investigate her latest concoction, and partially because he wanted to kiss her. After a long day, nothing relaxed him more than her touch. [break][break]

He did not even wait for her to finish hanging the towel before he wrapped his hands around her waist from behind. Dipping his head, he pressed his lips against her skin, where her neck and shoulder met. He lingered for a moment to breathe in her scent. [break][break]

Already, he could feel the tension seeping from his body. [break][break]

Nenet's inquiry forced Zev to lift his head so he could look her in the eye. "I've been tasked with overseeing the war effort here in Hoenn," he explained matter-of-factly, seeing no reason to sugarcoat his words or ease into the topic. [break][break]

"My official title now is God General, and I'll be on equal footing with the underbosses." Which meant he was only one step away from Rocket Boss itself.

Nenet leans back against Zev as his arms slip around her - Pavlovian - and tips her head back to rest against his shoulder. Her arms coming to rest over his, hands above his, she stiffens at his words.

Because that isn't right, is it? She hasn't heard what she just heard.

"What," is what she says; brow furrowed she pulls from his arms and turns to face him. Her hands wrap around his wrists. "Why you?"

"What war?"
[break][break]
It is not a question of his ability - Nenet knows well that her husband is a killer. But of all the wolves why pick the most dangerous to let into the hen house? He couldn't be controlled - not ultimately - unless you counted Nenet's limited influence.

And Nenet harboured no illusions as to her ability to muzzle his fangs. Even a bullet to the brain wouldn't be enough.

Zev's brow mimicked Nenet's as she pulled away, his lips pressing into a frown. "Why not me? I'm the perfect person for the job." [break][break]

In his early twenties, he had served six years in the Kanto Army. When Team Rocket's took over that region, he had assisted as a contracted assassin. And as a Beast in Hoenn, he had come to know the region well—as well as the League's weaknesses and strengths. [break][break]

Why did Nenet think he wasn't qualified? [break][break]

Instead of dwelling on that ridiculous notion, Zev answered her other question. It made sense she wasn't aware of the crime syndicate's increased efforts to conquer the region. After all, she spent her days sequestered away with her research. [break][break]

Pulling his wrists out of her hands, he reached up to rub her arms, intending to soothe her. [break][break]

"The war to take over Hoenn, of course. The League is not going to give up their governance without a fight. We'll be taking the offensive to both Mossdeep and Petalburg, and from there, pincer the rest of the region."

Nenet's eyes widen and then search Zev's at the news of war. Her hands are removed, and though she can feel the warmth of his touch against her skin, she feels nothing at all inside.

Her voice constricted when she speaks, Nenet demands all of a sudden, ignoring all else, "What about Mossdeep?" Hands fist at the hem of Zev's shirt at his waist as she steadies herself by dragging him nearer by his clothing.

"You can't touch Mossdeep - the Observatory."

The strength of Nenet's grip surprised Zev. He allowed her to drag him closer, even as a vein in his temple pulsed with irritation. [break][break]

"The choice to invade Mossdeep was made years ago, before you came into the picture," he said, referring to the public forum he'd attended when he still counted among the grunts. "Plans are already in motion. The city will fall—into our hands." [break][break]

His grip on her upper arms tightened, not enough to hurt, but hopefully enough to jolt sense into her. [break][break]

"I will lead the attack and I'll make sure your Observatory isn't touched. It's too valuable, anyway. The League would be foolish to burn it down just so we can't take it from them, but even if they did, we have contingency plans." [break][break]

That should reassure her, Zev thought. Releasing Nenet, he tried to take a step back, annoyed by her childish outburst. An exchange that should have relaxed him had instead stirred his temper. [break][break]

"I'm going to lie down," he said, his tone brusque.

Something dark stirs in Nenet's expression - dark and hard as steel. How dare this man dismiss her - how dare he not understand. As Zev tries to step away her hands move and she grips his hips, forcing him off balance to turn to her once more.

She steps forwards, her finger just below his nose as she points at him and hisses, "You will not dismiss me, you stupid, stupid man." She was livid, that much was evident. And for the whole of their relationship it was clear Nenet's intelligence lay leagues above Zev's when it came to science - to her chosen interests - but his lack of interest, knowledge, was something she had never scorned until this moment. Stupid. "You don't understand a single thing and you try to walk away? From me?"

"How dare you."

"Do you know what you're doing? Do you understand in the slightest how important that building is? The equipment?" Her voice raises, just under yelling, always cognizant that others lived beside them and could listen, "Do you think you can replace that?"

Zev had fully intended to cool off in solitude, uninterested in fighting with his wife. But Nenet dared to shove a finger in his face and hiss at him with scorn and contempt. Unaccustomed to her defiance, his own expression darkened with wrath. [break][break]

"Don't give me that shit," he snapped, shoving her hand aside. "What do you think you understand, when you look more at your telescope than at what's going on in the world around you?" [break][break]

They were almost the same height, but that did not stop Zev from attempting to cow Nenet into submission. He stood firm with shoulders back and chest out, and he glowered down at her with eyes as sharp and unforgiving as knives. [break][break]

"I just told you there are contingency plans. We've been backing up the Space Center's servers for weeks now. Even if that building gets leveled, we'll have all the data we need to make a new one." [break][break]

Before she could protest further, he quickly added, "We have a space research facility. A rocket ship. We once built a whole fleet for METENO, so we have the equipment and tools. But why should you care or trust me, huh? I'm not your precious fucking telescope." [break][break]

He spat those last words as if they were venom.

Nenet glares, her shoulders square, and she does not bend. Of course he wasn't her precious fucking telescope - it was far more useful than he was proving to be right this moment. She nonetheless rankles at his at his accusation. As if she hasn't trusted him with her life, her career, and her heart.

But he was a fool if he thought she would back down from her life's work.

"You aren't listening."
[break][break]
"None of that is the point, but you would know that if you knew a single thing about running an Observatory. I don't tell you how to kill a man so don't tell me what goes into my job. Rocket may have all of that but tell me where they are going to get the expertise to install that equipment? To move it? And then you have to calibrate it and provide maintenance. Those are flesh and blood people you have to supply, more money and more tools, and how many of those exist in the world? Much less this region?"

"The data is immaterial - I could copy nearly everything anyone could ever be interested in. The data isn't the point! Data can always be recollected! But how many machines exist and are willing to be sold?"

"For that matter don't you think where the Observatory was placed was chosen for a reason? Don't act like I'm being unreasonable, think." There's an almost frantic edge to Nenet's timbre by the time she finishes, her words rushed, clipped, and dangerously low.

Nenet pushed back without fear or apology, fanning Zev's anger. Not even Caleb Harcourt had ever dared to speak to him in this way. Briefly, Zev thought about punishing Nenet in the same way he'd once punished Caleb, with gaslighting and guilt-tripping. [break][break]

But he found couldn't bring himself to use those tactics. He knew too well that what worked on his pathetic brother would never work on such a strong-willed and stubborn woman. Nenet knew the truth of Zev and hadn't shrunk away, as others had. [break][break]

He tuned back to her rant just as she claimed the Space Center's data wasn't the point, and he stiffened as if she'd slapped him. [break][break]

"Fine then," he snarled, not willing to humor her or admit her rightness. "If you care so much about an Arceus-damned building, then you do something about it. Fuck all the work I've already done, right?" [break][break]

Crystals slowly bloomed across Zev's skin in small clusters as he seethed, no longer kept in check by the careful mask of indifference he often wore. [break][break]

"But you're not stopping the war, Nenet. I will lead the assault on this city and I will claim it. And you can either stand at my side through all this, or you can stay out of my way."

Nenet's gaze casts fleetingly to the rippling crystals across her husband's skin. She arches an eyebrow but otherwise does not comment on the seeming loss of either control or indifference at seeing his monstrosity. He wouldn't dare strike her.

"I could have been doing something about it if you had told me any of this sooner," Nenet answers, her voice clipped and level as best she can manage. How dare this man affect her so. Making her lose control like this.

Her eyes maintaining contact with Zev's, she furrows her brow minutely as she leverages instead, "We're a team, Zev. I have never given you a reason to distrust me, and I have always told you pertinent information, but this has been kept from me until now."

"Have I only just now earned the right to know? This has surely been planned for some time. I don't care if you assault the city, but I care about the Observatory. It's irreplaceable. Whether you believe me on that or not, it's true."

"I can help you - I have always helped you - but you have to let me."

Those words gave him pause. They echoed Nenet's sentiments from over a year ago, when he'd refused to disclose the reason for a specific, non-fatal stab wound. That moment had been the first major turning point of their relationship, when she ceased simply being a woman he slept with and had become, instead, his woman. [break][break]

And he trusted her. In that pause, he felt the truth in his bones: that she would take everything he told her in stride, no matter how egregious or criminal, because she trusted him. With her life, her career, and her heart. [break][break]

"I don't care if you assault the city." [break][break]

That was how he knew she loved him. [break][break]

"I can help you." [break][break]

Though notes of frustration bled out of his heavy sigh, Zev nevertheless felt his anger start to dissipate. He took Nenet's hands in his, a conciliatory gesture to begin the mending. [break][break]

"We are a team," he agreed. "I'm used to operating alone, even in Team Rocket. But I can involve you more, if you want to be. I just didn't think you cared for my work." [break][break]

The words were not meant to guilt her. They were merely an observation, because for the majority of their relationship, they had not cared about each other's work, and that was how they liked it. Had that sentiment changed for Nenet, then? [break][break]

Nenet peers down at the touch to her hands, her expression hard for a bare moment before it slowly bleeds away; her fingers shift, entwining with his.

"I care when it concerns me," she decides after a time. "We live here - I work here. I don't need to know the details of where you were last night or what you did last week. But I do like knowing you'll be gone, and for how long to expect. And if something like a war is on the horizon."

Was he finally listening? She hopes so. One hand pulls from Zev's, and she hesitates a moment before resting the palm of her hand against his cheek.

"I could have been safeguarding the machinery and getting you access codes if I had known. That building is worth more than you can imagine and if it's gone I can't stay here." She arches a single eyebrow at Zev as she holds his gaze.

Nenet would do a great many things for him, but her work would dictate where she lived whether he liked it or not.

Contrary to Nenet's earlier accusation, Zev was not stupid. He recognized the threat in her words, however mild; he saw the determination in her steady gaze. Even she, after all this time, after claims of being a team, was willing to leave him if the conditions were right. [break][break]

The bitter agony of Caleb Harcourt's betrayal had lessened with time, but it flared anew within Zev at the thought of Nenet betraying him, too. His grip on her hand tightened as he reached with his free hand to grasp her waist. [break][break]

"No," he rumbled, the single word uttered with a sudden, impassioned ferocity. Claws bit into her clothing as he pulled her close, until the front of her body was flush against his. [break][break]

"You're not going anywhere." Zev's voice was low and rough, a possessive growl thick with emotion. His face, so close to her own now, grew more monstrous as crystals continued their spread across his skin. [break][break]

In their darkness, his eyes flashed with defiance. [break][break]

"Don't you get it?" A hint of exasperation entered his tone. "You're the only person on this whole planet who matters to me. In this whole fucking universe. You're not leaving my side, Nenet." [break][break]

If it meant protecting a building from destruction, then so be it.
