sometime after Cillian Quinn returns to hoenn, when the drumbeats of war have already started to echo through the region proper, jayden walks through rocket hq. pocketed at his side is yet another folder of the latest updates on their recruits, a weekly report that he is planning on bringing to discussing at rocket's next war table meeting in preparation for their upcoming assault.

[break][break] but as he walks through the treacherous hallways of rocket's submarine, there is a sense of unease that ripples through him. it comes suddenly, colliding through him as swiftly as the flash of yveltal's wings in a nighttime sky.

[break][break] jayden freezes in his tracks, not aware of where he stands, in front of Cillian Quinn's vacant office. the underboss had been sent off to kanto to prepare their troops for war, and jayden had been so busy with their preparations that he hadn't even been able to see his brother off.

[break][break] but he would be damned if he let anything happen to his office in his absence.

[break][break] chien pao is not present with him, not today, but it's not needed. that tie is stronger than ever as HATRED ripples through him as he enters his brother's office.

[break][break] the tall shadow in the corner of the office stirs, and jayden's own ice-blue eyes, cold and unyielding, fix upon the intruder. around them, the cold air grows thick with frosty tension, charged with an impending threat that seems to tighten around them like a vice.

[break][break] "who are you? reveal yourself. you don't belong here."

[break][break] ice crackles around his right hand, poised to shoot.

Cillian's trip to Kanto had been brief, yet welcome. It was not how he'd left it, with smoke still thick in the air and cities in ruin. Rocket had rebuilt, reformed, and ruled.[break][break]

It was a reminder of what they were fighting for in Hoenn. Peace, at any cost.[break][break]

He paces his office now, restless, as he gathers his thoughts for a report on his mission. An alert on his phone about movement picked up by the camera sees him pause in the shadowy corner, his own shadow blending with the dark. The lights are off. The office is cold as ever. Colder, when Jayden enters.[break][break]

The challenge is unexpected, and Cillian's eyes — purple, where they should have been gold — narrow.[break][break]

He steps from the dark, umbral claws sharp with warning.[break][break]

"This is my office." There's a wariness, there. "Unless you know something I don't?"[break][break]

Had they taken the opportunity to dismiss him while he was gone? The very idea was appalling, and righteous anger blinds him to the far more obvious answer — Jayden didn't recognize what he'd become.

An irrational spike of HATRED burns through his blood at the accusation, and Cillian's features twist into something sharp and inhuman. "How dare you."[break][break]

Was this really his brother? Or was this Chien-Pao?[break][break]

Still, he neglects the logical conclusion of a misunderstanding, god-given hate mingling with the corruption in his veins and encouraging fury. SHADOW MIASMA chokes the room.[break][break]

This was not new. This, perhaps, would be recognizable.[break][break]

"I am Cillian Quinn," he snarls. It echoes, grating. Tendrils of MIASMA leap from the fog and solidify, SHADOWS to HOLD the threat in place. "Who are you?"[break][break]

[break][break] Shadow miasma chokes the room, and call it his delusions or his reality, but suddenly, he feels just as he did when Lulu Flint had choked him in the Silent Icelands.

[break][break] He bares his teeth.

[break][break] "Flint, you - "

[break][break] "I am Cillian Quinn."

[break][break] Before he can say more, before he can make another misguided effort in chastising Lulu Flint for methods beyond her control, the admin's eyes widen. Recognition flashes in eyes of brightened blue, and suddenly, behind the gnarled visage of a monster, he can see the Rocket Underboss. He can see Cillian Quinn. Most importantly, he can see his brother.

[break][break] Suddenly, as swift as it had swept into the room, the frigid air vanishes — and the frostbite that had traced his skin began to thaw, dissolving like ice beneath a rising sun.

Jayden seems to come to his senses, but Cillian's reception does not warm alongside the room.[break][break]

Still, the shadows retract from their CONTACT with skin, returning to the umbral pool of the underbosses shadow. His DARK AURA melts like the ice, leaving only his wicked claws and the deep violet of his eyes and veins.[break][break]

"Why are you accosting me in my own office?"[break][break]

He does not consider how the shadows make him nigh unrecognizable.

The shadows dissapate, withering around him like a field of blackened ash, and he stumbles. He breathes. He can breathe.

[break][break] "You - " his voice chokes, hands reaching for his throat. The same throat that Lulu Flint choked. The same throat that still wielded the marks of the Head Scientist's HATEFUL grip. "You were gone. And I was trying to look after your office."

[break][break] Somewhere in the corner of the room, Cillian Quinn would find his plants, knick knacks, or whatever else his office contained perfectly taken care of and dust-free.

[break][break] He swallowed, glancing up at the other.

[break][break] Was that really his brother?

[break][break] Or was it —

[break][break] — A member of the DRK Triad?

[break][break] No.

[break][break] This was his brother. It was. The mark of declan walsh's brand on his arm pulsed, reminding him of his disobedience.

His trip to the fallen region had been no secret among Rocket's brass. His date of return, however, had not been set in stone.[break][break]

That didn't give Jayden the right to accost him in his own space.[break][break]

True to his brother's words, the office was as Cillian had left it. The space was sterile and lacked any personal effects; since Elisabeth Fiorelli had stepped away from her flower shop, not even a poisonous plant brightens the foreboding space. It is not an office in which anyone is meant to feel comfortable, or safe.[break][break]

Except Cillian himself, who can't help but to feel the tug of a violation of privacy. This was his sacred space aboard the submarine. He'd forgotten to lock the door in his haste.[break][break]

Different.[break][break]

jayden cross's voice draws him back from his own mind.[break][break]

"I am different," he replies coolly. Umbral claws flex. "But it is my powers that have changed, not my position. This office still belongs to me."

[break][break] Of course he had known where his brother had gone. Even if it wasn't his brother, he would've known. He always paid attention to things like that, and he'd expected the same when the same had happened to him.

[break][break] It was only later that he'd realized — by way of mint frost — that not all were as fastidious as he tended to be about these things.

[break][break] "I know it does," he said, defensively, voice threatening to rise, but the pressure of Cillian Quinn's pushes him back. The pressure of his position. Even without Cillian Quinn's patron anywhere near them, Jayden feels an undeniable PRESSURE to relent. Yet that beast inside of him - the one that had only awoken as a result of that Ruinous connection - fought against it. Stubborn.

[break][break] He took a deep breath, staring up at him, before he drew a deep breath.

[break][break] And released it.

[break][break] "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to overstep."

[break][break] "But I didn't recognize you. With everything that has been going on, I was worried — I thought someone had broken into your office. The rats have been annoying as of late." His voice grew bitter as he thought of the skirmishes that had happened lately; even with his work with BARNABY FINCH in preparation for the upcoming war, there was still always more work to be done.

[break][break] He looked at him.

[break][break] 'You look different. You look - '

[break][break] He repressed a shudder. He didn't want to think about what his brother reminded him of.

Cillian's eyes narrow at the shift in pitch, their purple rings seeming all the more prominent in threat of his fury. But Jayden backs down, and thus so does he.[break][break]

He does not press the issue further, suggesting it to be at an end.[break][break]

Instead, he replies, "About ten minutes ago. I came straight here."[break][break]

He'd needed privacy and space to decompress before his scheduled meeting with the Boss to debrief on his experience. The thought sees him glance sharply at his phone, checking the time.[break][break]

"I don't have long," he cautions, pocketing the device and looking back up. "Another ten minutes at best. But I can assure you that the changes are nothing to do with Kanto, and that all is well on that front." At least as far as had been presented to him, and he had no cause to doubt. "As am I, before you ask. Between Beckett and my husband, I've been well-monitored." There's a dryness to his tone that suggests it wasn't entirely willing. "I imagine you understand more than most."[break][break]

Rocket treated their Ruinous Avatars with a level of suspicion that Cillian was beginning to understand.

As the conversation shifts on it's heel, away from his transgression and into the knowledge of his brother's appearance, Jayden realizes how much he's actually missed the Underboss. He often hides it well — as it the nature of their job — but there is that small part of him that will always be unsettled whenever his brother is not near.

[break][break] Is this how he felt when I went to Galar?

[break][break] But the moment dissipates as soon as it's come. There are other things to discuss, after all.

[break][break] His face serious, he nods as his brother shares the information regarding Kanto. He figured as much; if there had been dissent amongst their parent organization, it would have been relayed to him in other ways as well. Briefly, his mind flickers to the likes of Felix Gallagher before returning back again.

[break][break] Beckett.

[break][break] It shouldn't surprise him as much as it does that the other Underboss is privy to knowledge that he isn't, but it makes something distasteful settle in the back of his throat. Jealousy. Envy. He forces it down, swallowing.

[break][break] "I'm glad you're well and," he says instead, his voice soft. "I don't want to take up too much of your time. But..."

[break][break] Curiosity forces his gaze upward again, his head tilting slightly. Now that he's had a moment to adjust, he realizes that he is more curious than he is afraid.

[break][break] (Fearful trumpets echo in the dead of night, ringing hollow in his ears.)

[break][break] "What happened? You're... "

[break][break] "Are the changes permanent?" he says, gesturing to the eldritch shadows that coil around his brother's form, so different than the miasma that he'd grown used to. "Has Lugia changed too?"

He is used to being left behind.[break][break]

The sting of it dulls with the years. When friends and loved ones are absent, he braces himself for the thought they might never return. It's easier, that way. It hurts less.[break][break]

Or so Cillian tells himself.

"It's a long story, and I only remember half of it." His memories surrounding the change itself are hazy, as though they'd happened to a different person. In a way, they had. "I got swarmed by Nihilego while exploring the Deep Sea with Temp and Admin Fox. Their poison should've killed me, but..." He shrugs. There was more to it than that, but, "It didn't."[break][break]

For a moment, he thinks he'll say no more on the subject. It's the same thing he's told everyone else, barring Walsh and those who were there to witness.[break][break]

But as he remembers Jayden's own ascension, he realizes they may have more in common now than he'd thought.[break][break]

"Lugia was holding back, before. Or maybe I was shutting her out." It was hard to disentangle which was which. He doesn't expend much effort on trying. "I let this happen. I don't think everyone would be happier with that knowledge. You understand, right?"[break][break]

People fear what they don't understand.[break][break]

"You're still you. You're still my brother." Again, he leans into that bond when it benefits him most. "And I'm still me. No one else has to know the details."
