The diner Zev had chosen for a meeting with a new recruit was owned and run by a Team Rocket grunt. This meant that all individuals within its walls could speak freely on certain matters pertaining to the crime syndicate. Not only that, but the coffee was pretty good, by diner standards. [break][break]

He looked up from his phone when the recruit arrived. [break][break]

"You must be Hawkins," Zev said, not bothering to stand or offer his hand for a shake. A file with Hawkins' information was open on the table in front of him, complete with a photograph. "I'm Zev Harcourt. Sit." [break][break]

The Beast gestured to the seat opposite him in the booth. Beneath the table, his Gengar lurked in shadow, red eyes visible and vigilant. [break][break]

"What brings you to Hoenn? I'm sure you've heard about how dangerous and strange this region has become in recent years."

Except for the eyes: lined and deviled yellow.[break][break]

Hawkins sits across Zev with a nod of confirmation, not bothering to look around the establishment. The safest place to be is in the tiger's exhibit, provided it wasn't hungry... or bored... or whatever else.[break][break]

He does glance down at the open file, though.[break][break]

“I owed a favor.”[break]

A favor. Of course. That was common among recruits, especially if they owned such debts to ranked members of Team Rocket. [break][break]

"And what exactly does the favor entail?" Zev asked. He'd read up on Hawkins' highly esteemed skills, but that information was irrelevant to the interview. What Zev wanted to know, on the other hand, was the quality of the other man's character. [break][break]

From there, he'd know where to place Hawkins with a first assignment. War loomed on the horizon, and Team Rocket needed plenty of hands across multiple theaters.

Hawkins' exception for elementary-aged children was unsurprising, considering the information about his own offspring in his file. In fact, most people did not wish to harm kids, even within Team Rocket. [break][break]

A weakness, Zev thought, though he did not show it in his face. Maintaining an air of indifference, he collected the papers into a manila folder and closed it. [break][break]

"Our organization is gearing up for large-scale operations in Petalburg and Mossdeep," the Beast said, resting his hands on top of the folder and lacing his fingers together. "We also anticipate a League strike on Sootopolis at some point in the future." [break][break]

"We could use men of your expertise on either front to provide medical support to our agents and defenders. Does that sound like work that interests you?"

“Yes. Mossdeep or Petalburg would be best.”[break][break]

His specialty is trauma. His pokemon are trained to offset any lack of equipment. And the value of his efforts increase proportionally to places with less organizational infrastructure.[break][break]

Hawkins begins to slowly, deliberately take out a cigarette from his pocket. But it smells medicinal, or even herbal, and when he lights it, the smoke it trails is green and pleasant.[break][break]

He offers another to Zev.

Zev met Hawkins' gaze with an unflinching one of his own. He waited as the other man considered the options and mentally noted the answer. [break][break]

The truth was that grunts typically did not have any choice in the matter. However, Team Rocket's leadership did not blindingly hand out assignments. A person's skills, strengths, and flaws were all considered during selection, not to mention any interpersonal factors. [break][break]

The question had been a test of Hawkins' character, his answer revealing qualities about him that the organization would use to its advantage. [break][break]

"I don't smoke indoors," Zev said when offered the cigarette, though the curious smell and color of the smoke piqued his interest. "What's in it, anyway? That's not tobacco."

“Good for wounds. Focus. Shaky hands.” He falls silent at the last one; a surgeon with unsteady digits had no future. It, among many other reasons, was why he started distilling them in the first place.[break][break]

And best of all, not addictive—not technically. Though the dealers that kept coming back for more tried hard to contradict that point.

Zev made a mental note of Hawkins' explanation as he gathered up the papers between them. [break][break]

"Report to Admin howard slayte at headquarters and he'll process your paperwork. You will probably receive your first assignments in the next few days. Not related to the operations I mentioned, but to get you acclimated." [break][break]

Team Rocket had a lot of use at base for a surgeon, so Hawkins likely did not need to worry about taking common jobs like burglary and arson. [break][break]

"Do you have any questions for me before you go?"
