The people around you look like they belong to an old civilization. Busily, they work at constructing what appears to be a temple or tomb among the great dunes of this place.[break][break]

When asked, a worker says, "We are creating a great protector. Eons ago, a great star fell from the heavens and landed here. We are finally able to harness its power. Go. Take a look!"[break][break]

You enter the incomplete tomb to see a large chunk of some unknown purple material. Red veins pulse throughout it like blood—or poison. It emanates a great power. Before it, several boulders are set against each other.

When Zev learned that Nenet wanted to do some runs of the RKS machine's simulations, he was surprised. He didn't think it was within her field of interest, but perhaps recent events caused her to become more curious about Team Rocket's other projects. [break][break]

Either way, he didn't mind. The scenarios were key for discovering more about the DRK Triad and their meddling. If Nenet wished to help him out, he was more than willing to go through the simulations with her. [break][break]

"I know everything feels and looks real, but remember, this is all virtual reality. Our physical bodies are still sitting in chairs, plugged into the machine's interface," Zev told his wife as they found themselves in an older version of Hoenn's desert. [break][break]

Wiping sweat from his brow, he cast his gaze at the tomb ahead of them. "Let's get out of this sun." [break][break]

He breathed a quiet sigh of relief once they were inside and enveloped by cool shadow. The tomb's interior looked the same from the last time he completed the scenario. In the center of the space was the purple mineral chunk with its throbbing veins of crimson. [break][break]

A Wishing Star. A piece of Eternatus. [break][break]

Zev looked over at Nenet. "Since I've done this scenario before, you can choose what we do here."

Nenet hums in recognition of Zev's words, but still doesn't seem to wholly believe it all. Everything had felt so real the last time she had entered the machine - but, well, her body was safe at the end of the day.

She just needed to remember that in the moment.

Her gaze casts over to Zev at his discomfort, but she nonetheless nods and follows after him into the shade. The tomb the enter holds a Wishing Star, one that immediately draws her attention.

Deep fascination colouring her expression, she agrees with a soft, "Alright," and reaches out to touch the purple chunk, hoping to draw it nearer past the boulders.

Suddenly, you and everyone nearby is overtaken by a horrific vision of a skeletal dragon soaring above the planet, its ribs and claws as sharp as its tendrils. From a nearby meteoroid, a DEOXYS shoots outward. It attempts to attack the ETERNATUS.[break][break]

In the process, a fragment from the ETERNATUS' BODY falls toward the earth...[break][break]

All of you come to and see that the mysterious material is pulsing. With every pulse, the purple chunk begins to manipulate the spatial elements of reality around it and yourselves. Paranoia begins to settle in... before the scenario shifts.

Nenet's fingers brushed against the terrible surface of the Wishing Star, and everything went black. Zev steeled himself for the vision that followed: Eternatus bearing down upon their planet. Though a Deoxys defeated it, Zev felt in his bones that the fight was not over. [break][break]

He knew how much Necrozma desired Eternatus' power and energy. He knew with absolute certainty they would clash again. And when that time came, he would be there alongside his patron. [break][break]

When he turned his gaze back to the Wishing Star, it pulsed with a brilliant, dreadful light. The scenario disintegrated before his very eyes. He couldn't tell if that was simply the scenario shifting or if it was thanks to a release of Dynergy, no matter how simulated. [break][break]

Either way, Zev extended a hand toward Nenet, silently beckoning her to return to him.

Nenet watches with utter fascination as Deoxys and Eternus condescend to Hoenn. Was the fight like this every time? Did the simulation make changes and course corrections with whatever esoteric data it was fed?

Thoughts racing, her brow furrows as she glances about the simulated room. For a fleeting moment nothing seems to make sense and she stiffens as implications beyond her ken creep through the cracks of her mind.

But then Zev moves, his hand offered to her, and she takes it without a second's pause. She stands with him in the darkness, and around them the world swirls back into colour.

The bustling streets of Mauville City was a sharp contrast to the sweltering desert from the previous scenario. Standing there, holding Nenet's hand, Zev briefly thought about ducking into the nearby alley to avoid recognition by other pedestrians. Then he remembered it was a simulation and stayed put. [break][break]

However, movement from said alley still drew his eye to the shadows. As soon as he saw the familiar face of Father Winter, every muscle in his body tensed for a fight. [break][break]

"You," Zev hissed, releasing Nenet's hand to reach for a Pokéball. His Seviper appeared in a flash of fangs. Embers came to life between her jaws before she launched a FLAMETHROWER at the DRK Triad agent. [break][break]

One arm laden with shopping bags, her free hand in his, Nenet looks over in brief confusion, when Zev stiffens. Then she hears familiar voice speak.

Nenet's eyes widen and the bags spill from her hands as she stares into the darkness where her husband disappears. A gout of flame brightens the alley, illuminating the slim figure of Father Winter, and for a moment her heart stills in her chest.

Then a blinding rage courses through her at the sight of the man and in an instant her hand is at her hip to let loose her Pyroar. "Where's Farah," she demands, the words slipping past her lips without thought.

Pyroar roars at her trainer's anger, and a Hyper Voice follows towards.

"Where's Farah?" [break][break]

Nenet's demand prompted Zev to snap his gaze in her direction. Months had passed since Father Winter the Second offered to show them alternate timelines; the couple had not discussed Nenet's experience since then. [break][break]

Zev had all but forgotten about the ghost of a daughter they never had, but it seemed his wife had not, the emotional trauma evidenced by internal scars. [break][break]

The Father Winter of the simulation did not answer. Instead, his body began to split in half, reminiscent of reports from Mt. Pyre in 2022. Zev stared at the parts of Father Winter with unflinching hatred, even as the world around them transformed. [break][break]

"They taunt us," he said to Nenet, not bothering to keep the venom from his voice. He raised his eyes to the crumbling sky. "Even here, in this machine."

Nenet stands with impotent rage and an equally vicious husband in the dead man's wake. Her hands clench together, and in a rare instance of wrath kicks one of the spilled shopping bags to send its contents scattering and then breaking as the scene around them changes.

"Why-" she growls quietly, cutting herself off. Why him. Nenet's hands finally unclench as Pyroar slinks back over to nudge her head beneath her trainer's hand. Shaking her head sharply, she murmurs while looking away from Zev, "Nevermind."
[break][break]
Nenet distinctly wishes to be anywhere else than here in that moment. With one hand still atop her Pyroar's head she reaches for the one thing that brings her comfort in the simulation and takes Zev's hand once more into her own.

Nenet took Zev's hand, grounding him, drawing him away from the impotent rage rising within him. He turned his back on the two halves of Father Winter as the scenario transformed into a new one, bringing the pair to the cliffs of Alola. [break][break]

Zev frowned at the figure of the Xatu. It was not his first time with the bird Pokémon, so he knew what was to come. [break][break]

"We're about to see something from the future," he explained to Nenet. "That's what happened to me the last two times I was here. I saw a vision of me moving out of my apartment in Slateport, then another one of you wearing a wedding ring." [break][break]

He glanced over at Nenet. [break][break]

"At the time I saw them, I didn't know why I was seeing them. But then they came to pass." [break][break]

Little did he know, though, that the Xatu had other plans for him this time. [break][break]
