Unbeknownst to her, declan walsh intends to use her as bait for another. Brine crashes upon the rocks as they engage in battle—but impossibly, another declan walsh is reported to have appeared.[break][break]

Eventually, MATIAS SILPH appears, but will he make it in time to save her?

the nidoking roars. the cliffside rumbles. an EARTH POWER erupts before the boss' shadow-slick shoes. when the DRAGON PULSE lands against the torrent of clay and sootopolis bone, it gurgles like a drowning child.[break][break]

when the curtain of mud falls, the boss is no where to be seen.[break][break]

but the trick is quick to resolve with his reappearance. from a bouquet of smoke the boss attempts to slam a kick into annalise henderson's side.

annalise has already lost — too much of herself, fighting in a war that she cannot desert. an eternity ago, she had been a ranger whose deepest concern had been the rehabilitation of wild pokemon, but now she fights against gods and monsters for a league that had nearly cut her lose. but there's no other recourse than to keep giving more of herself away to defend her region, her universe, her life.[break][break]walsh doesn't even allow her the pyrrhic satisfaction of letting her watch the dragon pulse crush him. his nidoking moves in tandem, raising a muddy earth power to swallow the attack. [break][break]she reaches for her earpiece — why isn't illeana reyes saying anything back? — as her altaria lifts itself into the air and the earth power crumbles to reveal the empty space where walsh had once stood. [break][break]"he's — "[break][break]smoke plumes in her peripheral and walsh materializes, delivering a solid kick that turns her report into a cut-off yelp. she tries to plant her feet and recover her balance, but her training with paxton concordas gives her no foothold against slick ground and a forceful kick. [break][break]the bluff rises to meet her, stealing the air out of her lungs as she lands on her side. she rolls onto her back, desperate-eyed, and lashes her foot out at him. [break][break]and beyond them, another dragon pulse streaks across the sky, this time for his nidoking.

it lands. barreling into walsh's body, his arms and legs curling over the cyan orb, cape billowing past his back before he collides against the stone.[break][break]

his NIDOKING growls. beating its plated chest, the behemoth summons a SLUDGE WAVE: a foul backwash that sweeps toward annalise henderson and her MEW. sweeps her toward the unforgiving sea.[break][break]

after the toxic tide subsides, walsh's body is nowhere to be found.

whatever interest the rocket boss has in mew is dashed against the rocks by its aura sphere. annalise stands, fingers trembling at her sides, and watches his body crumple around the attack, memorizes the sight of it as a spoil of war. even walsh can be struck like a common man, after all.[break][break]the triumph is rich and fleeting, diverted by the nidoking that remains. she turns her head at the sound of its growl, eyes widening, and raises her arm to shield herself from the tidal sludge wave that bears down on her. [break][break]she has no time to think, no time to command mew, no time to scream wordlessly — the ground suddenly slips, then falls out from under her as she's swept off the edge.

the concern annalise henderson shows is appreciated and would have been welcomed under different circumstances, but in this one, his mind is focused on only one thing.[break][break]

[break][break]impatience begins to bleed into her expression as matias taunts him back. real, fake, figment — this walsh needs to be erased so they can reach their objective. they should be decisive. they should be ruthless. they should leverage these unbalanced odds like the rocket boss no doubt would in their position.
