Mitsuru allowed herself to be dragged out of the way. What else was she supposed to do? She was so terrified that she could barely even think, let alone refuse. All she knew was that her feet were moving away from the monster in front of her, and that was good enough for her.

Leave it to them. That's all she needed to do! Just run away. Get out of here. Let the qualified professionals handle it. Leave them to fight this horribly powerful thing that might kill them but that was fine because it wasn't really her job to fight it so she just needed to get out and leave it to them and oh Arceus she was such a coward but it was fine because this wasn't her problem because they told her it wasn't so--

The sounds of screaming and growling and a Leafeon being cooked by flames only made her racing mind run faster. Yet no matter how badly her mind wanted to flee, her legs would only carry her wherever she was pulled. So terrified, yet too afraid. Just like back in the Great Chasm. Just like back in Johto.

The Walking Wake, furious, opened its maw wide...

...And a blocky hand reached up to clamp it shut.

"S-Seimei?"

Sure enough, the Garganacl dragged itself up, using the unsinking Paradox Pokemon as an anchor with which to climb. Then, it unleashed a Salt Cure. White crystals spread from its finger and across the false Suicune, digging into its scales and drying it both inside and out.

"Seimei!"

Seeing her Pokemon return to the fight helped to calm her unsteady heart, if only for a moment. Was it still bad? Yes. But maybe, just maybe, it wasn't as bad as it seemed...?

THE FIRST WAVE: PRELUDE

SCENARIO A

ONCE THE WALKING WAKE IS FELLED, the crystal growth on the other side of the cavern shrinks. The residual scattering of light from the creature's STELLAR TERA CROWN assaults the senses still, and as they pass the unnerving tree—conjured by what could be, what might be, what may be—the waters rise ever so slightly.[break][break]

The three traverse further into the CAVE OF ORIGIN through that new opening. To wander these sacred tunnels, now desecrated by the TERA CRYSTAL'S INFECTION, is a marvelous experience to behold. Yet, an aura of foreboding continues to pulse with every step.[break][break]

In the distance or perhaps behind a few neighboring walls, they may hear a vague cacophony created by sariel duong, verona santillian and kyle lopez's WANDERING ENTEI. However, instead, the three find themselves descending lower. Deeper. It's oddly hot down in this level of the caves, and old waters rush across their ankles.[break][break]

When the cave finally levels out, they will witness a bright blue "stalactite" still young, still forming. The calcite beneath its point does not yet exist nor may it ever exist. However, it is encased entirely by TERA CRYSTALS...

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Aurelie let out an explosive sigh of sheer relief when the wild Walking Wake was finally knocked out by their combined efforts, its skin rapidly shriveling and drying from the recently reemerged Garganacl's SALT CURE. As it collapsed into the water with a mighty splash, she too sagged for a moment, feeling weak after the adrenaline drained away.

Then, clearing her throat with an attempt at dignity, the redhead forced her hands to unclench from both Mitsuru Kagami's sleeve and the Pokeball that held her fainted Leafeon. She grimaced remorsefully. That earlier FLAMETHROWER had caught her completely off guard, and that was her fault entirely.

But she dared not indulge too long in self-pity here. As she shielded her eye from the flashes of light still scintillating from the fallen Pokemon's Stellar Tera crown, Aurelie stared at the island in the middle of the water. "Is that what it was guarding?"

Her voice still sounded unsteady even to her own ears. Clearing her throat again, she went on, "It must be something special, considering how overprotective it was acting. We should go check it out!"

Looking around first for any other dangers, Aurelie beckoned to the two women and started wading to the cavern's center. Climbing onto the island, she gaped at the strange, skeletal-looking tree at its heart. "Is it...dead? Why is it even down here? Don't trees need sunlight?"

Standing near it, the redhead could sense a strange aura emanating off the tree. Her mouth grew dry, and her heart beat faster as the fear reared its ugly head again. Maybe this tree was also part of why the civilian lady and I were running around like Torchics with our heads cut off? she wondered. And not just the Walking Wake scaring us out of our wits?

With that in mind, Aurelie exercised presudence for once and didn't touch the tree. If her years of video and tabletop games had taught her anything, it was Never pick up a duck in a dungeon.

Instead, she scanned the rest of the cave and gasped when she spotted an opening she must have missed earlier. "Hey! Look! Our way out!" she exclaimed, pointing at the gap.

Summoning forth her Magneton, she waded toward that new opening, excited to be able to find their way out of this trap of tera crystals and cave tunnels. "Let's get out of here! I'd really like to be able to get back to the surface again!"

Both Aurelie's voice and steps echoed faintly off the cave walls, particularly when she clumsily stumbled and slipped when her feet encountered the downward slope of the tunnel. "Wait a minute...this isn't leading back upward! But...there's nowhere else for us to go..."

She gulped as her Magneton glided forward, its electric sparks illuminating the jewel-like glimmer of more tera crystals embedded in the stone. Where is this taking us? she thought, a tendril of anxiety and foreboding uncurling inside her. Is this safe? Where will we be actually end up going?

With a wounded gurgle, a shatter of light, and a wet thump, the Walking Wake topples backward. Soon after that, it begins to sink, the added weight of the salt crystals enough to drag it down to the depths below. Before long, it's disappeared completely beneath the deep blue waters. Mitsuru would've believed it was an illusion, a hallucination of her fear-addled mind, were it not for the all-too-real flames that burnt that poor Leafeon...

Where did it even come from? Why was it even here? When searching for answers, her eyes were inevitably drawn back to the crystalline tree at the centre of it all. Something about it made her feel uneasy. Despite her curiosity, she didn't dare get close to it. Just looking at it was enough to make a chill run down her spine.

Still, she pulled out her phone and snapped a few pictures of the thing, if only for posterity's sake.

But they couldn't stay long. The water levels were rising, and the Entei was getting further and further away. So, the only way was forward, past the dissipating wall of Tera Crystals and further into the winding cave.

"Yeah... Yeah! Let's hurry before-- EEEeeeeep...?"

Without warning, Mitsuru was lifted off her feet, and for a single second, she truly believed that the Walking Wake had came back to get its revenge upon her. However, as she was lowered onto the solid and stable shoulders of her trusted Garganacl, her shriek of terror turned to a prolonged sigh. W-well, at least she wouldn't have to walk anymore? Which was good! But.

"Seimei? Please warn me when you're going to pick up next time..."

The golem only offered a low rumble in respond, before beginning to walk.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]Hearing Mitsuru Kagami's surprised shriek behind her, Aurelie glanced back and had to suppress a smile when she saw the Garganacl lift the woman off her feet and onto its shoulders. "Now, that seems like a good way to travel," she called back, feeling grateful for this momentary respite where they could relax and even make jokes.

It won't last, of course, she thought dourly. But it's nice not to have to worry about someone or something trying to kill us right now.

She herself still walked on her own two feet forward, occasionally shining her flashlight ahead to watch for threats or, hopefully, a tunnel showing daylight. Leilani Keawe followed close behind, while the hardworking Garganacl lumbered forward and guarded their backs.

Water sloshed around their ankles, and every now and then, Aurelie reached out to splash her face with it to cool off. For some reason, it was strangely warm here, and only growing warmer the further they went in. Are we walking toward magma or something? she thought worriedly.

Eventually, the three of them came upon an area where the tunnel widened into a broad, almost open area. "Holy Arceus, look at that," the redhead involuntarily burst out. She was staring upward and pointing at the ceiling, her expression puzzled and quizzical.

From the very center hung a blue stalactite that almost glowed with its own cerulean radiance. As they watched, it seemed to visibly grow and length right before their collective eyes, the sharp tip noticeably extending a few inches. The outside glittered like precious gems with an abundance of tera crystals, and a feeling of immense pressure or heaviness seemed to emanate from it.

Does Rocket's leadership know there are so many tera crystals down here? Or are we the first to discover this place? Aurelie wondered.

She took a tentative step forward to study the stalactite more closely. But then, the unexpected sound of a piercing snarl stopped her dead in her tracks. With a bone-deep feeling of dread, Aurelie swiveled her head around.

Behind all three of them, an Iron Crown had suddenly manifested into being, seemingly coursing with shimmering energy. Its eyes narrowed aggressively as it stared back at them. Aurelie felt like she was watching everything happen in slow motion when it then lowered its head—and charged straight at the closest Pokemon, Mitsuru's Garganacl, with a PSYCHO CUT.

With a little elbow grease and perhaps some kind of prayer asking for some kind of luck, the Walking Wake was felled before them, Aurelie had gotten a hold on their more floundering partner in these depths and everything appeared to be going well for a change. Leilani breathed a sigh of relief, walking towards her Pokemon with heels clacked against the hardened stone floor beneath them.

CLCK! CLCK! CLCK!

Leilani raised her partner onto her shoulders. "You did well." The spunky, Pikachu swung its heart shaped tail as she received some well earned neck scratches from the Alolan before the next stop on their undergroudn tour was revealed to them. After their foe was vanquished, the caverns opened once more. Tera crystals continued to grow rampantly down here, as if it had been chipping away at the cavern's innards. Lei spotted a crystal just starting to form overhead while they continued deep inside of the system. While they continued, the temperature was starting to climb, and the waters here smelled...old.

"These opulent oddities of old overhead bring about such questions. Could our odyssey downwards bring about answers to these ominous threats?" Leilani asked to the other women, walking along behind them while Aurelie led the way with their plus one taking up mantle behind them, only for their peace to be disturbed by the ground shaking behind them. Lei turned back with her Pikachu, ready to start zapping the Walking Wake if had decided to test them again, only for the other woman's Garganacl to return to them both. She shook her head for a moment then quietly walked alongside the party while her head was lost in her thoughts.

The path took them to an open area with plenty of room, though no exit in sight. Leilani exhaled and crossed her arms over one another as she looked out at the field. Yet the crowning jewel was a large blue crystalline structure that was still slowly growing in the middle of the landscape. Her eyes scanned over it with intrigue. Was this another tera crystal, or perhaps, something more? "Be on your guard. This twisted terrarium may not be as tranquil as it appears." Lani disproved her own advice to walk to investigate that stalactite in her eyes, wondering what it could be used for. Aurelie must have had the same idea, as the two of them got closer before their next interruption came in the form of something snarling behind them.

Another Pokemon presented itself to them, though it appeared robotic, in a way. The sight had made her somewhat confused. "Is that a Pokemon? I've never recounted such a rambunctious rapscallion before. Might it be-" Leilani noticed it attack the Garganacl with a ferocious attack, one which she got into battle mode to help the weakest link here. The Pikachu jumped from her shoulder and readied another Thunderbolt at the attacker. Lei looked over at Mitsuru. "The beast's advance will test our aptitude, and I advise you to assist us in its approach!"

Down and deeper, deeper and down. Despite everything that had happened here, Mitsuru couldn't help but feel a twinge of anticipation. It was like she had weathered the dark skies and stormy waters, and was seeing the first rays of sunlight scatter through. First a mysterious Entei, then a strange crystalline tree... What other mysteries did the Cave of Origin hold?

She idly pondered that question as her Garganacl carried on through the winding tunnel. Daydreaming, if nothing else, was an excellent distraction from the thought that danger lay ahead. Better to be hopelessly optimistic than correctly pessimistic.

That was the hope, anyway. But reality had a funny way of subverting expectations, and neither optimism or pessism could prepare her for what came next.

"Woah..."

The sight of the blue stalactice encased in Tera Crystals made her eyes go wide and her mouth dropped. She couldn't explain why. Maybe it was her exhaustion, or maybe it was the sheer energy radiating from the thing, but something about standing before it felt undeniably... Divine. As though she were standing before a God in cocoon form. Or, maybe an egg? Or a prison, or a sheath, or a barrier, or, or, or...

Before she could grasp whatever idea her mind was reaching towards, she found herself interrupted again. Out from the nothingness came an Iron Crowned, fully formed and charging towards her. Immediately, her Garganacl prepared itself, readying a Heavy Slam to counter the cutting blades.

But it could not ready itself for the Gouging Fire that appeared behind it, or the Bulldoze that shoved it forth.

"No, no no! NO NO NO NO--" Mitsuru shrieked, forced from her sodium throne as the alternate Entei shoved her Garganacl forward. As she tumbled to the ground, she landed awkwardly, and though she couldn't tell exactly what happened, she felt a sudden and excruciating pain in her foot as she crumpled down to the ground. "--Guh...!"

But that was a pittance compared to what her beloved Seimei went through. Stuck between a horn and a sharp place, a Psycho Cut and a Bulldoze, the golem was carved to pieces, chunks of salt falling away until only the rocky body was left. After that? All it took was a well placed slice from the Crown and a fierce Gouge to send it tumbling down to the ground.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]First, Aurelie stared in shock when not only, but two Paradox Pokemon manifested from seemingly thin air. Then, when they both launched themselves at the Garganacl—which, to be fair, was the biggest and most conspicuous target—she groaned and rubbed her eye tiredly. Neither they nor Mitsuru Kagami could catch a break here, apparently!

But the fact they had both teamed up on one Pokemon gave her a moment to consider her options. Her fellow Rocket's Pikachu was already attacking the Iron Crown, so by the time the Garganacl toppled over with a crackling boom, the redhead had dismissed her Magneton and summoned her Empoleon.

She'd never used him before in battle, but, well, there had to be a first time for everything. "Napoléon, let's try WAVE CRASH on that Gouging Fire," Aurelie said, more hesitantly than a true battler probably should. It has fire in its name, so surely this should hurt.

The bird Pokemon obligingly cloaked himself in surging water and slammed forward into the leonine Gouging Fire, which bellowed at the impact. Her own Pokemon also shuddered, which made her wince. "Keep at it," she sighed, before looking back at Leilani Keawe.

I'd like to try EARTHQUAKE, but... She hesitated at the sight of the lively Pikachu zapping the Iron Crown with lightning bolts. It'll hit everyone on the battlefield. That'll be great for both these crazed Paradoxes, but...I don't want to knock out our own, if I don't have to!

So, Aurelie waited and watched and wondered if the other Rocket would withdraw her Pikachu soon.

Maybe I shouldn't be hesitating. Or even thinking about warning her, she thought, with a sudden thrill of self-doubt. A real Rocket wouldn't worry about their Pokemon, let alone other people's. They'd care more about the goal, or about surviving and winning.

But if it were me, I'd want her to warn me if she's about to damage my tools...

It wasn't the first time Aurelie had wondered if she really belonged in Rocket. Or the first time someone else questioned it. Yet, it hardly mattered if she did or not—not if she wanted to avoid being cold-bloodedly, immaculately sniped or stabbed by Zev Harcourt in some dark alley someday.

The whole cave's already shaking, though, she thought, watching her Empoleon weakening both itself and the Gouging Fire with more watery body slams. It sounds like there's a giant stomping its feet just outside!

The doubt was quickly replaced with a tide of terror. Is this the Kyogre already getting closer? Is everything we're doing down here already doomed?

Things were starting to get a little out of hand now, with the sudden appearance of the Gouging Fire in addition to the other robot-like Pokemon. Their plus one's Garganacle was swiftly felled in one fell swoop as it was the rciepient of a thorough Bulldoze. The impact had even caused Leilani to wince, raising her eyes just in time to catch sight of the stone giant falling to the ground. "Curses." Lei spoke underneath her breath, annoyed that they were one less in total numbers. Against powerful enemies like these, it was all the more reasons to consider falling back. "Tell us you have more Pokemon." Lei put simply, feeling her lips ready to launch into another longwinded ramble before she had caught herself at the last minute.

Her Pikachu, however, was running into a bit of an issue, in the form of the Iron Crown gazing down upon at after the Thunderbolt and retaliating quickly. It charged at the electric mouse with its head down low, glowing in a turquoise color. With what wa slikely some kind of kingly, defiant growl, its head experienced rapid growth as lights formed above it, styling itself into the shape of majestic antlers. Ones which slammed into her Pikachu full force, knocking her aside. The attack had sent her knocked back all the way to Leilani, her eyes gazing down at her KO'd Pokemon. Returning her to the ball, the Rocket exhaled while gritting her teeth. That was one Pokemon out of her team of three, and the one she had the closest bond with.

Leilani looked over at Aurelie with an anxious look. "Got any plans?" She motioned her head to Mitsuru while keeping an eye on her partner. It was a look that didn't need any sort of explanation, one suggesting flee from a lost battle and leaving the other foolish woman to take the attention off of themselves. Lei definitely wasn't evil enough to do so maliciously, it was just the best course of action for ensuring they at least got out alive, perhaps in time to be punished for their failure here at the caves.

The environment around them shook as loose bits of rock and more would free themselves from their imprisonment on the ceiling. The ground trembled before them and the Pokemon even looked confused by what was happening. The Alolan tried to steady herself while glancing above them.
"The stone above us stirs so shaken. Could such coincidences mean that certain celestial creatures enclose our current contexture?" What was going on up there anyway? Wasn't somebody supposed to keep that Kyogre from getting closer?

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]In the tumult of battle, Aurelie hardly understood a word that her fellow Rocket Leilani Keawe was saying to her. Thankfully, though, she did decipher the words "Got any plans?", at least. Seeing only her Pokemon on the field against the two Paradoxes, the redhead nodded vigorously.

"I think so," she replied, biting her lip. Though it's a shame her Pikachu fainted instead of getting withdrawn, she reflected pensively. "Just try to keep your balance, I guess!"

With no more warning than that, Aurelie called out to her Empoleon, "Napoléon! Use EARTHQUAKE, please!"

The battered-looking Empoleon promptly raised his wings, as if he'd been waiting for this command for a while, and called upon the ground itself to strike. Beneath their feet, the earth buckled and heaved violently, splitting apart in places into an ominous spiderweb of widening fissures. The Gouging Fire and Iron Crown howled in pain before fainting away and disappearing like mist before a light breeze, and Aurelie smiled tiredly.

But then her smile drained away when she noticed the walls and ceiling of the cave shaking, even after the EARTHQUAKE quieted down. Surely, Napoléon's attack wasn't that strong, was it? she thought, feeling an all-too-familiar surge of fear. It usually calms down faster than this...

Yet, the shaking wasn't stopping or even showing signs of calming down, and Aurelie began to worry. "Umm, ladies? Maybe we should retreat back into that tunnel before this all comes down aroun-"

Her last words were interrupted by a sudden, deafening bang coming from outside the cave. It was as if a massive thunderclap boomed directly overhead, leaving her reeling and dizzy. Aurelie was barely aware of the cave walls coming apart and collapsing around them, crushing the two Paradox Pokemon.

Above them was more stone, still crumbling and cracking apart to reveal further caves, tunnels, and crevices. And then, past all that, there was a startling glimpse of blue sky. A ray of sunlight was even peeking through.

What just happened? she thought, feeling something warm and wet dripping out of her ear and down her shoulder. Aurelie glanced woozily to one side and saw it was blood. The bang must have blown out an eardrum, because she was hearing nothing at all from that side now. Are we...safe now? Or in even more trouble than ever?
