How many people has he preached those words to, each of them less deserving of redemption than Howard? How many lost souls had he prayed would find the light. Here Howard sits, speaking into life his wish for a different path. How easy it would be to set aside the promise they made in the dream, to clasp hands, and face this war on the right side, come what may.[break][break]
What makes Howard deserve redemption less than someone like Elisabeth Fiorelli? Was it that the blow struck him and not some nebulous other? How is he any better than the rest of the League if that is the truth?[break][break]

"No." He said softly, thinking the Harbinger and the Devourer. "You couldn't."

When the Harbinger had ascended for the second time, the admin had realized that there was little to be done. When Cillian Quinn had risen from his unholy baptism, all Howard could so was watch and weep as his knees buckled and shook. For every man in Rocket, there was a god. For every hero, there was a villain.

If the Warrior struck down all that opposed him, maybe then. Yet this was the mantra that Howard preached in order to justify the last year of his life.

"Can you protect me from every shadow, knowing that Walsh might be there, waiting for his opportunity? Can you stop every sword? Every spear? Every arrow? You're one of the best, but even you have limits."

"This is my legacy."

His eye locked with the sheriff's. Bitterness and disappointment and self-loathing overflowed from the battered corpse in waves, but it was also augmented with purpose. Momentary destruction for eternal preservation.

"They died for my dream, just as many others will die for yours. Every soldier you march over, every corpse you bury, they died fulfilling someone's desire. I'll carry those nineteen with me even as I thrust a frozen dagger into Eternatus's heart and twist."

"There, he growled, "are your precious principles."

The words are spoken with a fervency that is rarely matched. It is the same commitment and faith that the people of Galar placed in their Pale Rider, before he came riding out of the mists years after his story had finally ended. They are words of faith, gathered only through witnessing the Warrior's coronation in the face of annihilation.

The differences between Howard and Navy's abilities were night and day.

"You are a member of the Elite Four. You were a Gym Leader. You will be less and more but your sword will not dull, nor will it fall to rust or ruin." His memory of that dream was as pure as a morning spring. He would not forget it merely because it was an inconvenient truth to behold. "I am a traitor, and the greatest blow I've ever struck was against your heart. Fortunately, your heart can mend."

If only.

"You will get your battle, Navy. And the dead will get their justice, even if they're deaf to it."

“Do NOT say that, Squire.” He rebukes Howard with heat he did not know was within him until the words are spoken. They are shouted, loud enough for someone to hear. Navy finds he does not care.[break][break]
“Is that how you would defeat our enemy and do right by those that died? Rolling over like a beat dog? Hell no. You are one of this region’s defenders. There is a strength in you, and only you, that Greyson, Matias, Melody, or me will never have. If we are to fight, you must fight like you want to win. To do anything less would be to dishonor Zaria. Crystal. Galar. The dead. I don’t believe in prophecy, Howard. What I believe in’s people. I don’t think heroes are gonna slay giants or royals will be summoned because some god told us it was going to happen.”[break][break]
He speaks with mad, burning conviction. His hands grip the edge of Howard’s bed, strong enough to strain the plastic. People are murmuring outside. He wonders how long he has until some grunt runs in, sees him, and spoils the game.[break][break]
“We’re going to do it because this is our home, and what man needs a reason to defend his home? Hate yourself if you must but march forward like you aim to win. Move forward relentlessly. Don’t matter if it’s the Dark Triad, Eternatus, or me. That’s our promise.”

Squire. The title reminds the archaeologist of days spent around the fire, training and practicing and growing stronger. It is a strength that he never thought he'd ever have. Squiring for the Warrior had been one of the most effective training regiments that Howard could've experienced.

Three months felt like an eternity.

"I did not say I wouldn't try." The words are sullen, like a child being reprimanded. "Every trick I've learned, every move I have. They'll all be thrown at you."

But the admin remembers the dream. He remembers how Eternatus fell. How Regice's barriers fell soft cheese against a knife. Navy is the Elite Four, a warrior. Beating him is an impossibility.

Yet the sheriff isn't wrong. An attempt must be made.

"Fate is a lie. I do not believe in the murmurings of some far-seeing oracle. We will achieve our goal because this is our era. We will not be held down by gods."

"So when I lop off Eternatus's head, I will come for yours and try to seize it as well."

It was a promise only one other bore witness to. He could break it, here and now.

Yet that would make the dream a lie.
