She stands at a crossroads, staring down the barrel of a gun loaded with grief. There's a pair of men she must see, and though her eyes are everywhere, not even the Visionary can be in two places at once. She will need to choose, and do so quickly: war is coming, and it will not wait on a scientist's careful scrutiny.[break][break]
She tells herself that it is logical to cut off circulation where the bleeding is heaviest, but deep down, she knows she is simply putting off confronting her own failure.[break][break]
She could have prevented this. howard slayte had lied to her face and she had let him.[break][break]
So, after checking to make sure it is not too late at night to speak, she teleports to Dewford in a flurry of crystalline blue energy, in search of the League's newest Avatar - a well-meaning but woefully ignorant man, who's lack of foresight might very well be his doom.[break][break]
Another burden she will be forced to bear, in her efforts to save their world.[break][break]
"It was me," she hisses, stepping out of the Unown Dimension and into his living space. She doesn't care if it startles him, doesn't care that he's not alone. "I was the one watching."[break][break]
She pauses, sucks in a bone-weary breath.[break][break]
"Do you realize what you've done?"

Some part of him expected something would happen when he got back to Dewford. His people wished him well. Deputies gave their reports. Finally, as day gives way to night as day always does, he is left alone at his home. Navy enjoys a cigar on his porch, smoking, thinking about the past and the future and what might have been and what might well be. When a woman steps out of some unknown dimension onto his porch, he turns and rises to meet her. He does not know if she is friend or foe, and so his hand goes to a pokeball.[break][break]
Another creature does not afford the intruder the luxury of chance. Something clings to the Visionary’s back, a tiny Greninja with a kunai ready to press against her throat. Navy is awed first by how sudden her appearance is and second by how immediate Hattori’s urgent desire to protect manifests into action. His first word is for the Greninja, lest he rouse the Unown’s anger.[break][break]
“Hattori. Back off. She’s not here to hurt me.” The frog jumps down, backing away, but not easing himself up. Her words carry in them a harshness that keeps the loyal shinobi on edge. At last, he looks to her, meets her red eyes, and acknowledges what she says and all the terrible implications of the words.[break][break]
“I put myself in hot water.” He admits. Navy sits up straight, looking up at her and putting out the cigar with a stomp of his boot. “Crap.” Even here, he censors his words, speaking them with low urgency, like a fire with fresh wood thrown on top.[break][break]
“Who else heard?” His eyes pivot between his visitor and the mist which seems to gather along the beach.

She does not flinch when the Greninja assaults her, though Kallistatus stares at him with a divine scrutiny. Her gaze remains fixed on Navy.[break][break]
And only when she sees it - the creasing of his brow, the flash of panic in his eyes, the straightening of his back - does she relax slightly, balled fists opening to reveal red marks across smooth palms where her nails have bitten flesh.[break][break]
Finally, he translates her reprimand for what it truly is: a warning.[break][break]
"Nobody," she sighs. "Yet."[break][break]
Mist rolls in from the shore, and curiously, she can almost smell wildflowers - the kind one might leave atop a grave.[break][break]
"I need you to understand something," she murmurs, with only a little less urgency. "The recording of you verbally allying yourself with a known Rocket Avatar is a priceless artifact my organization could use to sow discord amongst the League."[break][break]
She shakes her head, blue bob framing flushed cheeks.[break][break]
"Naturally, I will protect this information as long as I can. But - "[break][break]
Surely he already knows. Surely he can guess. There is one person who can force her hand.

Livy already thinks we’re in cahoots.” All that keeps him from saying PENELOPE LIVY knows they’re in cahoots is hard evidence, which he has delivered to Declan Walsh on a silver platter. It’s another sack of straw placed onto an overloaded Numel. Eventually, it will break, and their enemies will thank them for doing all the work.[break][break]
“I get it. If Walsh forces your hand, there’s nothin’ you can do. If I were in your shoes, I’d have to do the same thing.” It’s as close as absolution as he can offer, whether she seeks it or not. His eyes turn towards the mist, and he sees a familiar phantom approaching through the fog.[break][break]
“Is there…no way you can delete the recording?” Some part of him questions how Walsh could even translate the Unown’s vision into a digital recording to spread, but Arceus knows stranger things have happened when Darkrai’s avatar is in play.[break][break]
A howl cuts him off from discussing the matter further. Something wishes to behold the Visionary for herself. Zacian, a hero who demanded much and more from Hoenn’s collective dramatis personae, steps out of the mist and looks at the woman. Across her back is sheathed a giant-slaying sword, undrawn.[break][break]
“Guess you saw her, too?”

She wishes it were that simple.[break][break]
"The Unown are living beings," she reminds him, gently. "The recordings are their memories. They are autonomous - I do not control them - but those allied with me will do what is necessary to save me, should it come down to that."[break][break]
Maybe he can understand, because his heart has not been corroded by envy and ruination as the Councilwoman's has: it beats to the rhythm of reconciliation, all while yearning for the capacity to protect that which he deems precious.[break][break]
If Walsh orders Nomi to show him any dirt she has on the League, she could refuse or lie - but the Unown would likely intervene on her behalf, should the Rocket Boss's threats grow more sinister. And in that scenario, she would not be able to prevent the exposure of Navy's declaration. The Unown would betray her pact with him, for love.[break][break]
Kallistatus had done the same, once, to Nisa Holo. And as howard slayte knows: history repeats.[break][break]
The howl catches Nomi off guard, and she whirls around, face-to-face with yet another creature of legend. This one exudes a heroic aura, which tickles the back of her mind - dredges up memories of a time and place removed from her current reality.[break][break]
Zacian is beautiful, she thinks. Beautiful and sad.[break][break]
"I did not," Nomi admits. Another puzzle piece falls into place, another turn of destiny's wheel. She isn't surprised that he, too, has been chosen. He wears his willingness to defend Hoenn on his sleeve. In that way, they are the same - factions be damned.[break][break]
"Or rather, I did not see it happen. Admittedly, my focus was on Admin Fox and Regice."[break][break]
Kallistatus drifts down, regarding Zacian with its singular gaze. The shiny Unown-K hovers about her head like a floating crown.[break][break]
"What does she call you?"[break][break]

Either she did not witness his return to Galar or simply has the good grace to not bring it up. Either way, he is thankful. His last journey across the waste land forced the Warrior to bare his soul. howard slayte seeing it was embarrassing enough, much less the Visionary’s Unowns.[break][break]
Zacian regards the Unown with fascination. He wonders if Zaria, the woman she had been in the long-ago days when Ascalon was first forged, had ever seen something like Kallistatus. He thinks not.[break][break]
“Navy.” Is his answer to her question, glib though it may seem. “I named myself the Warrior.” A short bark signals Zacian’s approval of the epithet. “It’s what I’d be whether she showed up that day or not.” It’s in his name, the one he denies, baked into his nature. Though he hates the name his father gave him, the man named him well.[break][break]
“Try this one on for size, Ms. Visionary. Ever heard of a Pokemon like her threatening to sever the bond if her appointed sword brother doesn’t go to college when the war’s over?” He smiles the smile of a man on the gallows. At this late hour, with nineteen of his townsfolk dead and war on the horizon, it’s all he can do to try and keep his spirits up. He imagines the Dark Triad, somewhere far away, laughing at them and all their little squabbles.[break][break]
“I…want you to know, no hard feelings. If Walsh doesn’t put pressure on you, let it drop. If he does, do what you gotta do. I’ll survive. Things are heating up, and we’re gonna end up fighting at least once before this is said and done.” A notion which brings him no joy.

"The Warrior," she repeats, surprised to hear that he'd chosen the title for himself. The Unown had not given her that same opportunity, and it would never have occurred to her to ask them for the privilege in the first place. They had simply addressed her as The Visionary, and that was that.[break][break]
It fit. Like slipping into a perfectly sized shoe. Snug and cozy, the title held her in a comfortable embrace. But, she supposes, his fits, too. So what if he'd picked it instead of his God? Zacian had approved, and that's all that matters.[break][break]
"Is that so?" Nomi can't help but smile, just a little. "I can't say I've ever heard of such a thing."[break][break]
The smile soon dies on her lips, however, as the thought of college settles heavily onto her mind. She'd been forced to abandon her own degree, thanks to PENELOPE LIVY's grudge. She had been so close to achieving her PhD, and she misses her thesis workshops with GIDEON GRAVES. She misses just talking to him, really.[break][break]
Such is the burden of her own destiny.[break][break]
"I don't want to fight you," she sighs, truthful in her conviction, glancing side-long at Zacian. Something about being in the dog's presence made her wary of coming off disingenuous. "But I know you're right."[break][break]
A pang of frustration colors her expression, then.[break][break]
"It doesn't feel good," she admits. "To know that I failed to prevent this war."

“It’s just human nature to fight.” It’s his nature to fight. He came into the world fighting and bloody and screaming, according to his parents on the one occasion they talked about the day he was born. “You saw that as well as I did when we were on that Megalopolin ship. Plenty of people on both sides were out for their general’s blood.” It leaves a poor taste in his mouth, if only because he saw in their actions a reflection of his own heart’s desire, so often denied.[break][break]
Zacian watches them both. Her gold eyes stern when they look at Navy. The Visionary sees hints of distrust, though she hides it well behind quiet courtesy. She remembers what her sworn sword forgets, that all it takes is a snap of her fingers and he will spend an eternity wandering a dimension from which there is no escape.[break][break]
“Guess I have to keep a promise I made to her.” He nods past her, looking to the wolf who was once a woman and back to the Unown’s oracle. “Would you ever consider doing what Isaac did? I could keep you safe from people like Livy.” Though not, he thinks, from an eventual jail sentence. “I’m not gonna try and kill you, but I’ll do everything in my power to arrest you when this kicks off. I could make a good case to Goode and AQUA if you came along willingly.” But she won’t. Rocket needs her as much as the League needs him.

It is, in many ways, a tempting offer.[break][break]
Tempting because it would please Isaac Merlo, who's absence in her life feels like a missing limb. Tempting because it is, deep down, what parker jones wants: to be rid of Rocket, the constant storm cloud looming over their relationship. Tempting because it might restore her academic career and allow for reconciliation with GIDEON GRAVES. Tempting because, above all else, it would allow her some much-needed rest.[break][break]
"Rocket is my family," she murmurs. It is a gentle rejection. "And besides," she pauses, keenly aware of Zacian's intense gaze. Not on her, but on him. "You know as well as I do that people like PENELOPE LIVY don't play by the rules. Government-sanctioned amnesty will not keep me safe from her vengeance."[break][break]
It would take more than just Navy to protect her from that, and she does not have the time to waste on any more politicking.[break][break]
She lays a hand on his arm. It's an encouraging gesture, but her expression hardens.[break][break]
"Whatever happens, know that I will do what's best for Hoenn."[break][break]
