Roy struggled to find his footing as the surface of Sea Mauville began to unravel and collapse into the sea. The remnants of the structure rattled with each tremor, hampering the Rangers' efforts to stabilize the area and protect the wildlife. Balmung remained unphased by the setting, his ability to fly rendering the unstable ground irrelevant. The only challenge for Balmung was the relentless weather.

"Over here!" Roy barked, directing Balmung to weld another part of the unraveling structure.

As Roy gestured to the location, he stepped back, giving Balmung space to work. The charizard's intense flames melted the metal together, adding a crucial layer of stability. Each weld they completed brought a bit more safety to their situation.

"Can you lend me a hand?" Roy called to a nearby Ranger who was busy with her own tasks. He gestured to the crumbling structure, hoping for any additional support she could offer, as if she wasn't working on it already.

"That doesn't mean we should stop trying," Roy stated, keeping his focus on Balmung.

There was no time to concern himself with Annalise. The weight of Sea Mauville's collapse felt like a burden on Roy's shoulders, albeit figuratively for now. Their mission was to preserve the habitats here, and they couldn't let it all sink to the ocean floor. Such a disaster would devastate the ecosystem, forcing countless pokemon to flee their homes. While Roy wasn't overly fond of humans, he was driven by a deep need to protect the pokemon and their environment.

As he moved to the next task, Roy was interrupted by muffled barks and cries. Straining to see, he noticed white and blue fur trapped behind twisted metal and debris. It was clear that a pokemon was stuck in an adjacent room, unable to escape due to the wreckage.

"Balmung," he commanded, pointing to the blockage.

Balmung quickly closed the distance, using his powerful talons to tear away the debris. The screech of metal filled the air as the charizard revealed a trapped Walrein and its family. The pokemon hurriedly scampered to safety, but the barking continued. Roy's gaze shifted upward to the rafters, where a blue orb peeked out, trembling in fear. Another pokemon was still trapped above them.

[break][break]"huh." she unclips a ball from her belt. "how'd it get up there?" [break][break]annalise releases her togekiss. it cuts a far less intimidating figure than his charizard, peering at roy and balmung furtively from behind its trainer. she's used to its shyness, but duty leaves no time for slow introductions. she points up at the rafters. Roy and Balmung stood frozen, like gargoyles on watch, as they observed the Ranger at work. Any sudden movement could startle either the togekiss or the spheal above them. Although it was a team effort in many ways, Roy begrudgingly acknowledged the value in her actions. She was proving to be more than just a pretty face, though the words of praise were left stuck in his throat. Instead, he sighed and returned to their thankless task of keeping the massive structure from sinking into the ocean.

The metal groaned louder with each passing second, the noise intensifying as it strained against the relentless pressure of the sea. The floor beneath them trembled, and Balmung’s earlier efforts to clear debris had shifted the room's weight, creating new gaps that threatened to flood the space. The walls creaked and buckled, and water began to seep through the fresh breaches.

"Seal the holes," Roy ordered Balmung, his voice steady despite the chaos. Then he turned to the other Ranger.

"Make sure they get out safely," he stated, his tone suggesting that he was ordering a superior.

Balmung, careful to avoid the rising water with his tail, leapt from the floor and latched onto the wall. Flames erupted from his talons as he melted the metal, trying to close the holes before the room flooded entirely.

There wasn’t time to dwell on her reaction or cold demeanor. Balmung kept his focus, his palms emitting a steady stream of flame as he worked to seal the wall. His tail flicked cautiously behind him, dodging the drips and spills from the leaking structure. Roy took on the role of tactician, briefly shuffling debris with his hands to prevent further chaos. With water rising around their ankles, they didn’t have much time. If Balmung couldn’t seal those holes, they’d be forced to abandon the room.

Roy cringed at his superior's words, her tone grating like the metal in the walls. Even the nickname she used for her pokemon found a place under his skin. It was clear their mutual dislike ran deep, their auras repelling each other like the same ends of a magnet. However, out of respect for her rank, Roy kept his frustration in check, grinding his teeth in silence.

"We’ll follow you out once we’re done here," Roy said, not bothering to turn toward her. If she didn’t catch his words over the creaking metal and rushing water, that was her problem.

it would be easy to follow his delegation and leave him to his work while she makes sure the walrein family gets out, but his voice muffles as the situation worsens. she stops in the hall, watching her togekiss continue to lead the way, then turns back to go help him. [break][break]"you need help," she says when she returns. it's not a question, it's fact. he can grit his teeth and scowl at her presence, but he needs her all the same. "i'll help."[break][break]from her belt, her own charizard appears, flapping above the floodwater. it has the natural arrogance of a charizard, smoke billowing from its snout once it spots balmung. a snap of her fingers redirects its attention and she points at the holes. [break][break]with one last side-eye at its rival, it looses a flamethrower to help melt the metal.

Roy found himself pleasantly surprised.

He hadn’t expected this level of initiative from Annalise. In his experience, he was usually the one left to clean up the mess. However, this time, his superior stepped up to finish the job. Curious, Roy allowed himself a glance in her direction, taking in her focused expression. He was reminded of the strong women in his ancestry, but he quickly looked away, not wanting her to catch him staring. He exhaled deeply, watching as her Charizard provided assistance.

Unlike Balmung, Annalise’s fire-type seemed more adept at reconstruction. Its steady flamethrower was more precise, offering support that Balmung, more suited for battle, couldn’t quite match. Even Balmung seemed impressed, stepping in to fill the gaps where the other charizard needed help.

Roy let out another deep breath, embarrassed by his earlier rudeness. He avoided eye contact again, though this time for different reasons.

"Thanks," he muttered, as if more words were on the tip of his tongue, but he left it at that.
