There's a tap at the window. Tip tip tap. Tap tap. Tip. Tap tap. Tap.

[break][break] It's easy to interpret the sequence as nothing more than meaningless noise. A tree tapping as the wind blows it outside, a Hoothoot pecking at the window as it attempts to peer through the thin glass pane towards the boy sleeping inside, before giving up and flying away to harass an innocent bug.

[break][break] Yet it's not any of those things. The series of tips and taps is a meaningful one. A code passed down from an older boy to a younger one as a rite of passage. An induction into something greater. The feeling of inclusion is a powerful thing. The boy that would become Admin Fox does not yet exist. The man who inspires jayden cross to dream is not forged. The archaeologist who begs freya morningstar to sign his book is a far-flung phantom.

At first, there was no response, only silence. Then, the shades rustled, as if something was stirring behind them. A small reddish bump began to appear behind the glass, gradually growing in size. Claws gripped the windowsill as the creature took form, climbing up to perch between the window and the shades. It pressed its tiny arms against the glass, its face twisting into what it likely thought was a menacing expression. The Charmander was clearly trying to act like a guard dog, but it was far too cute to scare anyone.

From the right of the shades, a boy with dark hair finally emerged. He seemed more annoyed by the potential danger of the Charmander’s tail flame meeting his shades than by the presence of his friend outside. With a gentle push, he nudged the little reptile off the windowsill before sliding the window open to meet the boy standing outside.

“What do you want? It’s late!” he called out, not bothering to whisper. His grandmother was in the same house, but he knew she slept like a rock.

An eye rolls. He still has two.

[break][break] "You haven't been at school for like, a week! Two? Three?" He pouts and crosses his arm, his eye sparkling when the Charmander appears. Balmung is lucky to be with Roy, but Howard can't help but fume in annoyance that Roy's Pokémon is cool and his is nonexistent. Anytime he caught something, his parents took it away and released it.

[break][break] Roy was lucky that his parents were cool. Charmander was a Pokemon that the great trainers used. In old movies where kids left town to go on a journey, Charmander's trainer was always the one who ended up on top.

[break][break] "Something flew over my house towards Meteor Falls! It sounded huge! Made a weird flapping sound, too!" Howard pointed off into the distance, where Meteor Falls was obscured in twilight. There, many of Rustboro's sacred places sat undisturbed, where the phenomenon known as Draconic Spirit accumulated. It was a holy site, but what did children known of sovereignty and divinity? It was a place to explore. That was all that mattered.

[break][break] "Come on! Aren't you a little interested? It could be a dragon!" Dragons were rare, and much vaunted. He knew that Roy was a fan of the type. Anyone who raised a Charmander didn't mind scales and fire-breathing lizards. "Maybe we can catch it!"[break][break]

Roy’s annoyed expression was just a front. As soon as his eyes met Howard’s, he quickly wiped at his own, though he did it carefully, trying not to let his friend see what was hidden beneath. Howard didn’t know yet, and Roy wasn’t ready to talk about it.

“Are you sure it was huge?” Roy asked, trying to sound skeptical, though his voice wavered. He always thought of himself as tougher than the other kids, mostly because of his family’s bond with dragon-type pokemon. However, that toughness felt like it was slipping. His tone gave more away than he meant, so he scrambled to recover, trying to sound more interested than he actually felt.

“Okay, okay. You can count me in. I’m interested,” Roy said, putting on a forced grin. He wandered off to grab his shoes, but even Balmung seemed to sense his hesitation. “We have to be back before morning.”

Before climbing out the window, Roy wiped his eyes and nose with the back of his wrist one last time, then looked back at his pokemon.

“You’re coming too,” he muttered to his charmander. With a small hop, Roy climbed out the window as Howard stepped back to give him room.

A sigh of a relief and a fist pump fled his lips as Roy prepared to worm out of his room like an Applin fleeing its favorite apple. Roy thought himself a Hydrapple, but even the most ferocious hydra started its life as a wyrm.

[break][break] "Huge! It was like, the size of a bus." All Pokemon were massive to someone who had none for himself, but that was exponentially stacked with the fact that Howard Slayte was small, compact, and easily fit in luggage. Yet his eyesight was impeccable. It was his best quality. "And we can make it, no problem. We just need to hustle."

[break][break] With Balmung there, they could likely scare off anything that might try their hands.

[break][break] "Cover Balmung's tail so we're not spotted. We can uncover it when we make it up to 115."

[break][break] Howard squinted up at the night sky, where the moon shined down on them both. Any light was a blessing. He wished he still had his shop's Carbink, but his parents refused to let him take it out. The gem sprite was solely meant for education, and to use it for something as menial as battling was considered abhorrent. [break][break]

"Come on!" Howard quickly scampered down the street. "Before your folks find out!" [break][break]

He didn't know.

“Cover it!?” Roy had already questioned Howard’s plan, but this suggestion only made him more reluctant. The thought raced through his mind as he and his Charmander exchanged uneasy glances. They both considered a few options, one involved using Roy’s shirt, but in the end, Roy settled on the simplest solution: recalling Balmung.

With a sigh, he pulled the ancient poke ball from his pocket and returned his Charmander to its container.

Howard was already forging ahead, leading them into trouble as usual. Roy chased after him, clutching the primitive ball tightly, making sure not to drop it. However, as he ran, Howard's words echoed in his mind, stirring emotions Roy wasn’t ready to deal with. Still, he refused to stop. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, trying to force back the tears that threatened to spill over. He believed he could outrun this feeling, and so he ran faster.

“Wait for me!” he called out, using the words to drown out his thoughts.
