Him believing meant the world to her. It would have been so easy to disregard her theory as the mad ravings of a person plodding through the different stages of grief. Perhaps they were all a little bit mad.

“I used to feel that way too. I could fight like Chomper, fly like Chomper, bite like Chomper. Now I can’t do any of these things…” Andrea lamented, slumping her shoulders. Even with all her newfound determination, the loss of her strongest Pokémon had dealt a heavy blow to her confidence.

Still, there was another Pokémon that was just as strong, if not potentially stronger; a certain masked ogre. “She prefers to be called Pon.” The young woman explained. “You’re not wrong about her. She’s a free spirit. She likes going on her own adventures from time to time.”

One of those adventures involved a bear and a monkey, but that was a story for another day.

“I know the type.” Ogerpon sounds like Eris Halla. Trying to control where she goes is like guessing what shape the clouds will take that day. “Sounds like she makes your life interesting, this Pon girl.” Interesting will do her some good in times as dark as these. Besides, anyone who’s so keen to smash in the Loyal Three’s heads is a friend in his book.[break][break]
“Be careful. She’s a species the League doesn’t know ‘bout, and I bet they’ll come to you with a spiel ‘bout how she’s full of infinity energy or somethin’.” His friends in the science division are exceptional at taking all the romance out of life, all the fun out of making friends. “If you’re serious ‘bout not enlisting, you shouldn’t take ‘em up on any help they offer. There’s always a price.”

In many ways, Pon had enriched Andrea’s life. That little ogre was a valued friend and a cute critter she could love and nurture. However, as the Warrior cautioned, bonding with a legendary came with certain annoying caveats.

“It almost sounds like you speak from experience.” The dragon maiden observed. “Have they come to you with that spiel for Zacian? Have they come to Josh Devlin and Elise Calcifet too?”

Swift and Charles were her friends too. The thought that the League would treat those dignified and sometimes sacred beings as assets at best or weapons at worst left a sour taste in her mouth.

“What was your backup plan if Kyogre didn’t do as you wanted?” Andrea proceeded to ask, furrowing her brow. “What if it attacked Ever Grande or Pacifidlog instead of Sootopolis?”

“Josh was a founding member of Sapphire, or close enough to one for government work.” Had it not been for the incident with Eris, Navy imagines Josh would have been recruited into AQUA like he was. Some stains don’t come out easy, no matter what the gym leader says about having moved on. “Elise is probably in. As for me…” He smiles a smile usually reserved for people like howard slayte, a rebellious smile.[break][break]
“I did some sleep therapy to scout. I’ve been in AQUA for a year now. Kyle got me in. Zacian and I made an agreement. I may not like what the people up top do, but I intend to defend this country. Once the war’s over, I’m gonna reform things. Don’t know if that means going for Top Champion or joining the council, but something’s gotta give or there’s going to be another Rocket.”[break][break]
The smile sours into something sad. “The next one’s not gonna have avatars, so the League’s gonna look real bad if it brands ‘em terrorists like it did Rocket.”

The self-proclaimed reformer of Hoenn introduced Andrea to a concept that would definitely keep her up at night: A dystopian future where only the League owned avatars. What would they do with limitless power at their disposal and no opposition?

“You’re assuming those that are avatars now are gonna stay avatars forever.” Said the dragon fanatic, trying to keep as level a head as possible about this. “Legendary Pokémon have flocked to Hoenn in order to help us, not fight in our wars. They don’t follow the League’s agenda. Lord Rayquaza blew the meteoroid to bits, when the League’s plan was to make it another universe’s problem.”

Believing they had any degree of control over those godlike beings was even more childish than dressing up like a crocodile. Hopefully the recent rampages of Groudon and Kyogre had shattered that illusion for good.

“Pon, Swift, Charles, even Zacian… They’re all free spirits.” The young woman concluded, wizened mentally by her grueling life experiences. “If we take them for granted, or try to abuse their blessings, they could one day leave our lives as suddenly as they appeared.”

“You’re not wrong, Andrea.” He says with a commander’s sober solidarity. “I want you to be right more than you could know.” It’s his job to smile, to never let his guard down. A proper Elite Four has to keep his cards close to his chest. Just now, Navy finds that passing hard. Between the endless sleepwalking, the eternal war, and the cycle of his friends changing all around him, he feels himself cracking at the seams once again.[break][break]
“I’ve seen avatarship change some people I care ‘bout. Kyle was your average slacker cop, then he got a hero complex like my brother had…” And, in the end, Kyle died like a hero.[break][break]
“I want things to go back to normal when this war ends. Rayquaza can rest. Groudon and Kyogre can go…wherever it is they go. Kanto’s birds back to Kanto. Zacian deserves her rest.” At last, he manages a smile. “Think I’ve got to go soon. It’s hard to stay in one place for too long. Hope you get the chance to meet Zacian one day. Think you’d like her. Maybe Pon and her could take down Fezandipiti together, if it’s really back.”

“A hero complex, huh?” Perhaps Andrea was guilty of that too. Had she tried to play the hero in Petalburg? Against Zev Harcourt? Against Kyurem?

“It’ll be sad to see Lord Rayquaza go, but I hope that day comes sooner rather than later.” The dragon enthusiast solemnly remarked, before cracking a smile at Navy’s comment about Fezandipiti. “I can’t wait! Someone needs to teach that dumb bird a lesson!”

That day would have to wait, though. The Warrior needed to go back to resting. “Take care, Navy. And make sure Zacian is happy! She doesn’t deserve to get turned into a weapon by the League like they tried to turn Kyogre…” The girl stated with a serious frown.
