Iron-clad feathers scrape against one another, jangling in the wind. It is the only sound all the way up here, at the highest peak of the broken walls. Down below, the rebuilding efforts continue.

A shattered white wall. A flooded city. Though washed away in the deluge, it had all been stained in blood not long ago.

"... Can't tell when someone wants to be left alone?"

Hana looks up from the sight finally, remembering herself. She does not bother to turn to face the one who approaches her silent vigil. She simply stares out at the sapphire on the horizon.

"I'm here for clean up. Just so happened to run into you."

He paused beside her, staring at the ruins of the city beside her. Montgomery's body didn't show that he was ready to fight or attack. He attempted to look relaxed.

But, Hana seemed like a WILDCARD.

"What are you doin' here?"

The towering skarmory behind her lets out an angry squawk and scrapes its feathers together like blades, sending down a shower of sparks. Hana turns to face the man, placing a hand on her agitated pokemon's breast to soothe her. Yoshitsune flaps her wings dangerously, but she doesn't attack, merely staring daggers at the intruder.

"The more pertinent question is, why're you?"

Hana stares into his ruby eyes, her own azure gaze as cool as the seas. All the aggression she'd had in the pitch of battle was no more, the wind in her sails stolen by Walsh's ceasefire.

"This ain't your town, is it? You ain't even from Hoenn, from the looks of you. So, why'd you take up arms against us here? Why do you think it's yer job to, what'd you call it? 'Clean up'?"

"It's not. But that don't mean I can't come and help reparation efforts." Though he didn't answer her clear statement about where he was from and why he was in Hoenn. Instead, he took his time sitting down a nice space away from her, taking out a cigarette.

"I took arms 'cause it's my home now. Even if I'm not from here, I'm gonna try to help if duty calls for it. Why does it matter?" he asked, raising his eyebrow at her.

"Think it'd be worse if I didn't nothin'."

"... Think this city'd be better off if you and people like you actually did do nothing."

She looks down at the repair efforts on the ground. Up here, it all seems so small, but an entire city was drowned not long ago. Most of the bodies had just been dredged from the crater. A battle had been fought not long ago, only ceasing with the rise of the emerald drake.

Not before.

"Instead, you think you're 'helping', using Kyogre's attack to stage an assault. Why wouldn't you come with aid? Why wouldn't you try and stop it before it hit the city? If it was really about helpin' your home, you wouldn't have come with guns drawn.

"Don't give me that shit, admit it-- you guys were lookin' for any reason to kill."

Her skarmory snorts impatiently behind her, rustling her feathers. She looks down on the man, scorn in her eyes. It's only for the fact that her master doesn't reach for her swords at her hip that the bird remains placated enough to suffer him here. A single flap of her wings and he'd go tumbling off the side of this white rock.

He had to wonder, though, if Hana hadn't distracted him, would he have gone out and tried to stop ameena abadi again? She'd told him that it was her who had healed him during the battle.

Not that Rocket had to know about it. That was aiding the enemy.

His side glance met SAPPHIRE. "I could think the same for you lot. You were ready with swords drawn to kill Navy. Why?"

"The sheriff was riding in on an invading force."

The simple answer first. Hana's hand rests on her blades, clattering together in anger at her hip. The motion stills them somewhat.

"League were out for blood, and wild dogs need to be put down."

She pauses, looks the man dead in his eyes. There's no deception hidden there when she elaborates on that matter-of-fact statement.

"Tell me, who represents the ideals of the League? Your Top Champ, right?

"Well, bitch is a killer. And I don't just mean she's got blood on her hands, we all fuckin' do. I mean the cunt's a cold-hearted, cold-blooded murderer. Say what you will about Rocket, but samurai have a code of honor. Your opponent is defenseless, they yield, you don't cut 'em down just 'cause you can with your fancy avatar powers.

"... And if she's the best of you lot, what's that make you?"

But, Montgomery knew that this conversation could continue on and on the same way, repeating the same arguments that were made time and time again.

Hana believed the League was evil. Montgomery had seen the evil from his past doing in Rocket. Neither side was good. Neither side was right.

But there was always a right way to go about problems, which neither side could do while the other existed and held their PRIDE.

"If ya wanna do something good..." Montgomery extended his hand to the ruined city of Sootopolis. "Why don't we go down there and actually help the people who need it instead of arguing with each other?"

The man once again casts it aside as gray.

Hana shakes her head.

"No. The only gray I'll accept is the edge of a blade. You can cast it away if you want, refuse to look at it because it burns, like looking straight into the sun, but me, I see it plain as day.

"I see the Truth."

The skarmory at her side scrapes its talons angrily on the white rock beneath them. White, and hard. Unbreakable, so everyone here had thought, til their day of judgement.

Til the day that Dahlia, Miro, and all the rest had decided that their blood would be a foothold to conquest.

"I don't want good.

"You Leaguers are ones who care to position yourselves as some force for good. But Rocket holds no pretense. It simply is what it is. You want to be good, fine. Go be good somewhere else. But first-- tell me, what's so good about all of this?"

She gestures to the pit beneath her, the ruined walls, the flooded city. The remnants of a battlefield.

"What 'good' did carrying out an assault rather than a rescue mission do for these people? Where's the good you wanted to bring in this sundered city?"

She scoffs.

"Tell me. Believe in something for once and try and convince me. Maybe if you're charismatic enough I'll help you cover up this little monument to the League's hubris, but I doubt it. Til then, leave me. Let me burn it into my memory so I never forget it."

"You sit here, sayin' all this jabber and shit about both sides, when you're a fuckin' criminal. You pushed yer swords through a man's chest without remorse. Yer fellow Rockets didn't hesitate to destroy the hospital in fuckin' Petalburg."

He clicked his tongue, regarding her with a sneer. "That boss of yers didn't hesitate to attack an undefended city without remorse, did he? Swarmed it with grunts, he didn't give a shit if you all died for him."

Bitterness rested on his tongue. And not from his cigarette. "Are you really so blind for bloodlust that you'll follow somebody who uses you as a pawn?"

His arms extended wide, a display to the carnage around them. "Nothing is fuckin' good about this. There's nothin' good in war. Ya can keep tryin' to play your 'only the League is evil' card, but yer actions speak louder than words."

Montgomery pushed himself off the edge he was sitting on, stomping out his cigarette. "I'm here for the people. I'm here to protect innocent civilians that were slaughtered from this world of pettiness Hoenn has against each other. It'll all burn down eventually, and no one will be alive after that. At least I can fall knowin' I've saved someone rather than slaughtered them for nothing.

"The world is fucked. All of it. But I believe that everyone, including you and me, will receive their karma eventually. Might as well fight for their safety in the mean time."
