an interesting assessment. for his choice of words, she briefly wondered about his tech savviness. was he reciting what he'd been told? he was so deeply shrouded in mystery that every small detail seemed significant, enough for the imagination to run away with.[break][break]

“it reminds me of the cloud,” she said after another pause, not daring to bring up the times she’d gone through the simulation he was referring to.[break][break]

“more data curated by maldacena, maybe. i’ve wondered if some of them come from other timelines, or universes.”[break][break][break]

the topic of cyllora was dropped. a ghostly chill whispered memories across her neck of strange old dread, a black faceless wolf lurking somewhere in the snowy night.[break][break]

for half a second she froze, before managing a smirk. “time feels best spent on curiosity, even whilst blindly stumbling through the dark.”[break][break]

he was right that it was frustrating. more evenings than not, she would scream at the cosmos for all the mysteries that made such a life worth living.[break][break]

“i am looking, day and night. i think what i see is an escape plan if we need it, and a boundless weapon even if we don’t.” she recalled the spaceship she’d seen briefly materialize in area zero with ameena abadi . ”in time, i will know – and then i suspect i will blindly stumble through the next challenge, as is the nature of work on paths unpaved and yet to be illuminated.”[break][break]

surely, their time was limited. there was a point to get to – but in that brief meandering, she noticed an exceedingly rare opportunity to satisfy a question that had been gnawing for years.[break][break]

“may i ask what motivates you, to be at the helm of all this?”[break][break]

resolve stopped the nail clawing into her palm. though not particularly defiant or threatening, within her gaze was some perceptible dismissal of fear for him, steeled against his darkness if only for a moment of boldness. “is it for glory or power? a belief you’re doing right for the world?”[break][break]

she remembered it, having purposefully distanced herself from MAGMA. now, she understood the allure. hunger for the psychic nectar of dreams was a relentless gnawing in the pit of her weary soul, suddenly as overwhelming as it had been in months.[break][break]

she did want power, and not just the feeling of life blooming through her veins, but enough to journey across the manifold layers of existence.[break][break]

his phantom face was a reminder of her mortality. hoenn had taught her that this question was not as simple as it had once seemed.[break][break]

“of course.” an undeniable truth. the evidence was in her work, her blood, her craving eyes. “but there are many kinds of power.”[break][break]

her gaze fell to the syringe, knowing she could do nothing to stop it from plunging into her flesh if he so desired – nor could she stop herself from hoping there were shadows in the barrel.[break][break]
