He smiled at her without mirth.

"How do you think I'm still standing?" The words sink in with ominous implications. A transfusion in the morning, several injections at night, and constant observance from medics like Shion Murasaki or chemists like Absinthe Blackwood took up swaths of his time. "It's not from sheer will, I assure you."

He frowned at her question.

"No. I'd like to install one in Petalburg, though."

It'd make reconstruction far easier if Regirock or Regice could sweep away destroyed buildings twigs and leaves in a breeze.

"I'm sorry for your loss, by the way."

"No. I'm more concerned about the existence of Power Spots as a whole. We overuse them, and they spring up often. Petalburg has proven that Dynamax is a disaster, as I warned my fellow admins months ago."

His words were surprisingly bitter. Fern had bleated of their need to indulge in newer weapons, and their need had killed thousands of people. Not that the admin cared, most likely.

"But when have those less focused on academia ever listened to the warnings of the enlightened? If my body shuts down from a Power Spot, then my life's end will come whether I sit in my office or work out in the field. We cannot stop their tide."

His feet crunched against Tera Crystals as pink mist licked at their heels. The noxious smoke of nicotine and tobacco swirled with its more mystical cousin.

It reminded Howard of oil and water.

"I can't allow fear to blind me to potential danger. Not anymore."

howard had not always seemed to think of the phenomenon in such a way. she recalled collecting dynite ore in the mine with him months ago, and the wishing star he’d taken that had not been good enough.[break][break]

”fear keeps your eyes open. how brave can a dead man be?“ she blew smoke into the mist and checked her clock. it read 2:11. ”figure out your limits, howard. if you’re enlightened, don’t die foolishly.”[break][break]

they were roughly a third of the way through their meeting. time to move along. without giving him much of a chance to argue, she asked, ”what do you think of the tera crystals?”[break][break]

As for the other? That one had been replaced with a Key Stone long ago. Now, it was cursed pink from Tapu Lele's interference. Even now, he saw its spectral form dancing over Lulu's shoulder. A vision that was not real, before quickly disappearing into pink mist. It was something only he could see.

"My stance on the Tera Crystals has not changed. They are a scourge that rot our region from beneath us." He nodded to her, before checking his watch. It was stuck at 4:01. It had been like that for years. "They are the most dangerous force in the world, and I suspect that they're replacing the bones of the region. If they were to disappear..."

He shrugged innocently.

"...what would happen to Hoenn?"

she glanced over at him, at his single eye and the keystone in the other’s socket. there was a flash of a memory, of blood and screams, before she looked away again. ”right.”[break][break]

as the mist drew closer, the cave grew colder. snow began to fall, but lulu didn't mention it.[break][break]

"it would probably collapse, i think." and howard knew that much, she was sure. the destruction of what held their region together was a common concern.[break][break]

”i agree with you that they’re dangerous.” ‘the most dangerous force in the world’, certainly. ”but disappearing? do you think that’s going to happen?”[break][break]

She glanced at him. The way she looked at his eye made him shudder. Howard had his own demons, his own memories of losing an eye to his own hand in exchange for wisdom. Yet every day, he felt even more foolish than before.

The mutual suffering in regards to eyesight went unmentioned. Too much pain.

"Entitlement to power that is not ours does not make us strong. It makes us play dunce." He shivered as snow dusted his body. Yet despite that, it didn't melt on contact. It simply accumulated on his body. "Though I must confess, I feel like the dunce right now."

He glared at her.

"I didn't know I'd need a jacket."

To argue otherwise is foolhardy." He checked his broken watch, before meeting her stare. "And you are not a fool, Lulu Flint."

He nodded in approval at what she had to say. He did not mention Zacian nor her human form, nor the world of Tera Crystals he had visited to replicate the journey to Galar. That was a journey meant for a knight and his squire, and not for this woman.

"This entire world is ours. It was our birthright from the moment we lit the first flame and brought light into the night. We still exist despite millennia of catastrophe. We are entitled to this world, and we will win this war against the gods."

Arceus above, it was cold.

"We will survive, Lulu." For a moment, he looked remarkably brave, before shuddering. "Your nightmares could probably scare the devil, respectfully."

He was well-paid too, he just spent his money on funeral urns and gold sarcophagi instead of useful things like rent.

"That so?" He peered at her watch and nodded. He went and checked his own watch. Given that it hadn't moved a minute after entering the mists, time must've been slowing. The scientific process at work. "Hm."

His mind was not as ordered as hers. A silhouette of a man with spiky hair and a cowboy hat flickered in the mist for a moment.

"Time is relative in the mists, then? What does that mean?"

when she glanced up to know if he’d seen it too, she noticed his old body flickering in the mist near him. sentimentality and the torture of longing shimmered in the thread of its tapestry — like many dreams, she found, sweet or not.[break][break]

in a way, he’d already explained it.[break][break]

of warping time, she said, ”there are multiple possibilities. it could be influenced by our minds being here, or it could have to do with the distortions — perhaps even a result of conflicting timelines attempting to merge.”[break][break]

Lulu did as any good scientist did. She offered theories and hypothetical scenarios to justify the madness of the Interdream Mist. There was a chance she was doomed to fail from the start, and that there was no way to justify the shifting, dubious nature of dreams.

ameena abadi was similar, grasping for a transient understanding for a metaphysical concept.

Though perhaps there was a rhythm beneath the rhyme to justify the shifting nature of dreams. The dreams that fueled humans were remarkably ironclad and did not change. Yet time shifted the paradigm. It distorted the perception of wakefulness.

"Why would they do that? Wouldn't those timelines simply destroy themselves if they were to fully merge?" Howard put a hand on his hip, thoughtful. "Human perception seems more likely. Our dreams can shift reality."

That was the might of mankind. That was their will.
