Uncomfortable quiet fills the space as both come to the same conclusion in different ways. Perhaps Walsh would agree to reassign Tempest, but would the Boss lose respect for him as a result? It had been so important to Temp that he clawed his way into the role of his own merit. Self worth has never been his strongest quality.[break][break]

Cillian wants nothing more than to beg him to reconsider. It's love that makes him feel that way, and love that resigns him to it, in the end.[break][break]

Temp had to do this.[break][break]

And so a wash of relief crashes over Cillian as his husband relents to his plan.[break][break]

"You can do this," he affirms, turning his attention to Temp in full now that he's not worried about pressuring him with his gaze. "No one in Rocket's as qualified for this as you."

Tempest flushes softly under the praise, as simple as it was. A line of tension in his shoulders drops. It's not gone entirely, probably never would be, but he feels better in the moment.[break][break]

Turning to face the other again, he faces Cillian Quinn and doesn't shy away from him this time.[break][break]

"I don't know about that... the Border is ever changing." It was easier to downplay his own knowledge even if he, too, knew it was true.[break][break]

"But if you're there, I think we can come up with an even more effective strategy to try and trap it if it comes to that."

"Shut up." Cillian cuts Temp off before he can finish downplaying his knowledge. "I don't want to hear it." It's not coldness that reflects in his eyes, but love. Adoration for his partner, for the intelligence it had taken him far too long to see, yet still not as long as it had taken Temp himself to accept it.

Clearly, it was still hard for Temp to see himself as Cillian did.

And that was OK. Love wasn't about perfection. It was about accepting the one you loved for their flaws and insecurities and all.

"We sure can," he agrees with a smirk. Tendrils of shadow snake around his husband's ankles, drawing tight to bind his legs together. A brief tease, before he's released. "I trust you. I'll follow your lead, whatever the plan."

Shadows caress Tempest. Unlike how many may feel, they just bring a weird sense of comfort. They're extensions of Cillian Quinn, of the man he loves more than anything else in this world. How could he possibly dislike them?[break][break]

The reaction the give at the binding is instead an interested little shiver down his spine.[break][break]

"Stop that." He teases back, a small laugh leaving him. The mood from before slowly dissolving.[break][break]

"I'm hoping to just talk to it first. That makes it hard."

He's sure Temp's more than aware of that, and brings it up more as an errant thought than a true caution. If Yveltal wished to speak with Rocket, it could've shown itself during their hunt for its nest, or even earlier. But they'd seen little of it since it had abandoned the Executioner's side.[break][break]

That bodes ill, in Cillian's mind, especially in the wake of Xerneas' death.[break][break]

"I worry it might blame us for its counterpart's fall."[break][break]

For they were to blame; there was little doubt in his mind, and zero guilt. He did not care for Xerneas as he did for Lugia, and so did not afford it the same reverence and respect.

Something easier said than done yet Tempest speaks it as if it is simple. If Rocket could not have Yveltal, no one could. It could not be allowed to become another piece the League took to work against them.[break][break]

They would kill it just like Xerneus before it came to that.[break][break]

"The League killed Xerneus." Tempest says, shrugging. "They decided to help flood the city and attack the Dynamax Tree. Anything before that was only happenstance." And Yveltal did not need to know anything beyond that, anyway.

If they could subjugate any legend they wished, Zapdos would still be within their grasp. Yveltal wouldn't have fled to begin with. Zekrom and Giratina would serve Rocket, and not the Avatars who'd abandoned their cause.[break][break]

For Rocket, however, they will try. No matter the odds.[break][break]

Temp's reasoning surrounding Xerneas' fall differ from Cillian's own, but he offers no argument. What Temp expresses is the opinion most beneficial to Rocket, so why discourage it?[break][break]

"I think it's more simple than people like to think. They let their views of Gods and desire for power blind them." It's a soft statement, all things considered. One that Cillian Quinn knew would not be directed at him, but more so at the fools who threw themselves at a Legendary's pokemon feet and begged to be recognized. It was people who threw themselves into volcanoes with the delusion that Moltres would choose them. It was for people who would betray everything they knew and cared for just to chase that dragon.[break][break]

And it would be simple, right? Death incarnate or not, with Cillian they would have extra raw power. Even in it's own realm, Yveltal could not hope to win against the group of them going against it.[break][break]

"Of course. If for some reason we can't catch it, it can't be allowed into the League's hands." And no doubt that attacking it would enrage it against Rocket and their goals.

Eyes narrow, the purple rings around irises growing more prominent. Though the gentle note to Tempest's tone suggests the insult is not levelled toward him, Cillian still takes offense.[break][break]

"I was no different."[break][break]

He's shared of his foray into Articuno's lair, how he'd challenged the icy avian to battle. It might've killed him if he were unlucky, yet still he'd sought to grasp that shred of power.[break][break]

Emma had been furious with him. He hates when Temp reminds him of her, hates the sliver of fear that stabs in his gut. If his life with Emma had fallen apart, why not this life, too?[break][break]

No, he tells himself firmly, doing his best to shake off the anxiety. Temp is different.[break][break]

Twenty years in Galar. He had to have faith.[break][break]

"Don't let your view of legendary Pokémon blind you," he cautions, sighing. "If you underestimate its power, it will take advantage. It's not invincible, but neither are we."

Tempest does not see the insult for what it is until he sees that small flicker of Cillian Quinn's expression. A rough hand reaches out to lay atop his husband's, a gentle apology in his eyes.[break][break]

"You are different." It's said with a soft warmth. "You still think of yourself as fallible. Can you really say that about most other Avatars?" Especially for one as powerful as Cillian was. Where most would look in the mirror and see Gods, drunk off their own egos, Cillian was still a man. Even with the shadows clinging to him like a wreath, the claws and tentacles and echoing voice, Cillian was still human.[break][break]

Why? Because Cillian Quinn still realized he could die.[break][break]

"I'll be careful, I promise. There isn't much it could lure me in with. I'm strong enough on my own and I already have the most precious thing in my life right here." Tempest gives his husband a slow, adoring smile. "What more could it try to give me?"

"Your enemies don't need to know, just you. But can you tell me, honestly, that some of Rocket's Avatars still think they can die?" As he says it, Tempest thinks mostly of Zev Harcourt. While their conversation about Necrozma had been brief, Temp was perceptive enough to see red flags for what they were. Despite the airs he put on and being stuck in his own ways, he was no fool.[break][break]

But, he doesn't want to talk about these people any longer.[break][break]

The kiss is accepted. Tempest tries to press a second to the corner of Cillian's mouth, then another slightly higher- to kiss a trail upwards until he can leave a lingering one on his forehead.[break][break]

Tempest hated when his beliefs clashed with Cillian Quinn's. At the same time, he trusted Cillian to know that he held no ill thoughts towards his husband of Lugia. They were exceptions to vitriol. He loved that Cillian still allowed Tempest to be himself.[break][break]

"I know you'll do anything to keep me safe." A reassurance and a worry.
