Her head hung, eyes fixed on the floor and her feet moving forward... Hoping, praying, that it might begin to crack and fall out from under her. Her shadows were there, she knew they were... And how desperately she wanted to disappear into the darkness.[break][break]
'You're even working with them?! Taking their hand outs or somethin...'[break][break]
She had been inconsequential to so many for so long, rockets passed her by without a second glance, without a second thought. She was no one to them, had been no one as she faced him on the beach of mossdeep... And yet he bore witness to that woman laying out the next portion of her own personal path, curated special just for her...[break][break]
'Or I can tell the league more so they investigate themselves.'[break][break]
An empty threat... Because he had already done so. And so it was Yuina wasn't released from league headquarters, instead she was brought to another room for further questioning.[break]
'I'm so proud, Yuina...'[break][break]
Haunted eyes stared down at nothing in particular as she awaited what was to come, all of her uncertainties laid out to bear. And all she could think was how much she hated herself for this... How much she had become her own worst enemy.

Yuina Higashi waits for a door to open. It stays locked. Mist, low and cool and clear, serve as the harbinger of her interrogation.[break][break]
bryan delarosa is many things. Some would call him a bear, for he has the strength of their kind. Some a wolf, for he is one of Rocket’s strongest beasts. Navy thinks the man more a snake than has been poisoned by his own venom. When he speaks of Yuina Higashi and her part in this grand stage play, Bryan’s fangs practically corrode the ground beneath him with their poison.[break][break]
The phantom that materializes across from her out of bare air is tired, dressed in tattered rags. The shirt beneath his red poncho is a patchwork, torn across his stomach where a glacial lance pierced him. Faded jeans are frayed at the edges, and his boots are filthy. He seems more an einherjar pulled fresh from Valhalla than any sort of detective.[break][break]
It takes much of his strength to manifest like this. The rest was expended on an investigation. Records were dug into. Files were opened. Questions were asked of frightened folk who thought him a ghost. It all led to this conclusion: Yuina Higashi does not seem to have existed before a certain point.[break][break]
“You’re lucky Delarosa said what he said to me, Yuina.” She’s smart – smart enough to have fooled them all, Rocket and League alike. He knows she’ll connect the dots, and they’re beyond playing coy. “Be straight with me. Just who are you?”

The door remains closed, locked, and she's left with nothing but silence. Silence, and the sounds of that proverbial hourglass running out of sand. Her fingers are twisted in white knuckled knots, eyes cast away into an impossibly far away distance, and she doesn't move, not even as a manifestation of one form or another materializes in the room.[break][break]
Where Yuina can't know what this is or how it's come to be, she doesn't question in the slightest that it is in fact Navy. There's no reason to question. But where she had been wondering who it was that would come to her in the beginning of her end, she had hoped that it could have been so many other people besides the sheriff... Mixed in with her dread and her distress, there was shame...[break][break]
"You told me once I'm not lucky... you were right," she should have listened, she should have done so many other things... but this was the grave that she had dug herself, and she was getting ready to be made to lie in it.[break][break]
She only just glances up with her eyes, though she doesn't meet his, she can't, not when he says her name... The last time perhaps she might hear him say it, or anyone for that matter. Then he asks the one single question...[break][break]
"...You won't believe me...," and she couldn't ask him to, not now, she realizes... The shame grows.[break]
"I-- I thought I could be... I wanted to be just Yuina," but she understands how foolish it all was, how little choice she actually had in anything. The veil had already been so thin, and it was unraveling thread by thread...[break][break]
"I don't know who I am... I don't remember..."

So often, Navy tells himself that he is no liar. So often, he tells himself that he is an awful liar. This, in and of itself, is a lie. So often he wears the amicable face of Sheriff Navidson, a man who all but materialized into Hoenn’s cultural zeitgeist as a doubting but loyal League soldier. So often he tells people that everything will be alright, to leave it all to the sheriff.[break][break]
This, too, is a lie. He existed before the battle of Dewford gave his life definition within the Dark Triad’s purview. He was Michael Navidson, of Navidson Solutions, a man who made a living with one foot in white and one in black. Navy was a lie that began with Gabriel Navidson, a lie that grew and grew and grew until it became an ideal. When he looks at Yuina, it is with the cold gunmetal of that man that was, a man who knows lies, who knows how to spot them.[break][break]
That is how, when he reads her expression, the way she can barely look at him, the way she confesses like a child who’s been sent to the principal’s office, that he knows she is telling the truth. Yuina Higashi may not be her name, but it’s a name she has chosen for himself. As a man born with a different name than the one history has draped upon him, he understands her.[break][break]
He leans back in the chair, folding his arms with eyes bearing into the would-be ranger. It takes a man such as he, one who is both Warrior and murderer of his parents, to neither defend her like she is a damsel or condemn her as a traitor. These are complicated times, and Yuina Higashi, it seems, is far more complicated than she would have people believe.[break][break]
“Then tell me what you do remember. From the beginning. Think as hard about it as you’ve gotta.”

Yuina's only truth was brought to the surface, her hand forced, the threads beginning to fall away from who she presented to the outside world. She couldn't hold it together any more, even if she tried she would only be pulling at the fraying edges, tangling more and more threads in the process... It was going to fall apart in its entirety, the fabrication of Yuina Higashi gone with no hope of stringing it all back together. And in the silence that followed where Navy contemplated her words, Yuina only watched each row slowly unravel.[break][break]
He finally spoke, and the sound of his voice shattering the silence all over again causes her shoulders to quake, she was tense, expecting the worse... He could have said anything, but instead he requested her story...[break]
Yuina looked up to him then, and though her eyes lifted, she still wasn't looking at him, she was looking through him, past him, eyes empty and distant. She knew what her story sounded like, she knew how inane it all sounded, and thinking back on the handful of times she had regaled such a story, Yuina even questioned why those around her had believed her at all... She had nothing to show, nothing to prove that any of what had happened to her had its roots in reality...[break][break]
But there was little else she could do. It wasn't like she had a choice on the matter.[break][break]
"...Last summer, I woke up in Petalburg Woods with nothing. I didn't know who I was, what I was doing there, how I got there, and no memories," she began, the beginning of her story that was likely now to lead to her end. Was there poetry in that?[break][break]
"I had nothing but a name, Yuina Higashi, and a handful of Pokémon that at least recognized me, and for a while I thought that I could just start over, and be here, in Hoenn... It seemed like it was pretty easy at the time, since people come here to start over all the time," She continued, and it all seemed like such a long time ago... For only have one year as a frame of reference for her small world and short life, that whole year ago felt like an entire lifetime.[break][break]
She was far from finished, there was so much more to the story, but she hesitated... She could feel the threads of space time pricking at her finger tips... That night under the swamps of fortree city...[break]
"The incident last fall, the missing persons case in the swamps of 119... When we encountered the Megalopolans in the caves, there was a space-time distortion that broke out...," should she even try? Was it worth it...?[break][break]
"The only memories I have are because of that distortion, because I was lost in one. I don't know when, or where, or how, I don't know if it was my own fault or...," frustration spiked, but only just... It was the one question, the only question she wanted answers to, why she sought after each and every distortion she could find, but still, she didn't know why things happened they way that they did.[break]
"I was brought to the other side of a distortion, and was in a time when Ancient Sinnoh was called Hisui. There was a village, they found me, took me in, gave me the name Yuina Higashi, and I lived there for a time before... I woke up in Petalburg...,"

He listens, as is one of his greatest strengths. Navy sits in absolute silence, still as the grave, as Yuina recounts one of the strangest tales he has ever heard. In these extraordinary times, what she says does not seem so extraordinary. There are many who lose their way in this age of strife. Gods walk among them and demand a high price for their allegiance.[break][break]
Only his eyes move, following her body language but always returning to Yuina’s eyes. The eyes are the gateway to the soul. Her soul, he thinks, is not made for a lie so grand as this. There are so, so many more believable tales that she could spin. The best lies have within them a kernel of truth and this tale holds little enough of that. It’s like something out of a child’s fairy tale or one of the television shows kyle lopez forced into his younger brother’s cultural zeitgeist.[break][break]
Yuina Higashi says a word which makes the hair on the phantom’s arms stand up. Hisui. It is a word rarely spoken but one he dreams in dragon dreams, kept hidden from all. He dreams of a high peak, and feels a mother’s love in the warmth of her flesh, the last gift she can ever offer to a starving whelpling, hatched just in time to find her corpse. Recognition dawns in his eyes, playing across his face as they dart back and forth in confusion.[break][break]
“Is it cold in Hisui?” He does not give away his hand. Though her words are tinged with the truth, he won’t reveal anything. Not yet. In those dreams, he is cold. He sleeps beside two waterfalls, daring other Pokemon in the icelands to come and challenge his dominion as Alpha of that place.[break][break]
“Did you stick to the village, or go outside?”

The telling of her story never got easier, the weight of it and all that it meant was poignant and palpable. Each time she brought it to the surface of her darkest shadows, it felt more and more impossible, more and more like it should be just that... A story... A nightmare... But bringing it to bear only made the darkness that much more saturating, knowing how long it had been and how little she still knew.[break][break]
There was far more to what she had experienced thus far, or at the very least she expected resistance, admonishment... But Navy's eyes flicked to her instead with... What was it?[break]
"Wh-what," Yuina blinked, for a moment the distance left her eyes as she looked at him, actually looked at him for the first time since he appeared. She was almost incredulous... Was it cold in Hisui? She could say whatever she wanted in a moment such as this, where no one else was able to know what she knew, where no one else had seen what she had... Surely he had to know that?[break][break]
But all the same... as a home and a place she longed for, pined for, and knew she could never return to... She couldn't lie about that far away place...[break][break]
"I-- uhm... it is cold, colder than Sinnoh is now... The snow in the northern mountains comes down further and blankets heavier... you could see the snow caps from almost anywhere," she offered first, quiet, reminiscent, but she blinked down for a moment. What was she even doing? She felt foolish, answering his question as if he actually believed any of what she'd just said... but something in the way he asked, the way he could have asked any other question in knowing that she had lied to him already...[break][break]
"It was dangerous, not many left the village by choice, and even fewer returned if they did... But no one understood how truly beautiful everything was, and being here now, in the present has always made me appreciate it more... Miss it more...," she remembered so many things about a place so far gone and so lost to time...

How very alike, they both are. Only as she speaks of this place, hints at her adventures, does he come to appreciate their similarities. She pines for a Sinnoh of long ago. He pines for Galar as it was three thousand years ago, just before and after its darkest hour. Neither of them can return. They are trapped here, in the present, in this waste land of reality where distant, dark figures smile upon them and play dangerous games with their lives.[break][break]
Navy closes his eyes and seems to fall asleep. He focuses his mind, remembers his own dream from long ago. He remembers wearing a Gabite’s skin and walking across unfamiliar land. The world was wilder in those days, free. Pure and untainted by mankind’s ideals was that old land.[break][break]
It was cold – cold enough to make that dragon burrow under a mountain, rest against the warmth hidden closer to the core of the planet. Her words ring true.[break][break]
“And you don’t remember how you ended up in Hisui, or how you left?”

He was silent again, listening to her words, but she couldn't know what for. He couldn't actually believe her, not when something as simple as knowing that Sinnoh's climate was much more temperate such a long time ago, where climate maps showed how far the snow shifted south and studying what the village was like from books and old texts... She hadn't said anything special, and even if she did... Why would he believe her at all?[break][break]

Still, through all of this, Navy never once questioned the validity of anything she said, but Yuina knew it had to come at some point, didn't it? She'd spent so long living in her lie... Or had it been long enough for it to be truth...?[break][break]
Navy spoke again, regarding her uncertainties, filling in gaps that she very well had already considered... Her eyes snapped to focus again, but they bore every bit of pain and the weight that she carried every day...[break][break]
"--Dangerous? A threat to everyone I love and care about," she finished, but the ichor of her shadows wasn't pointed at him, how could it be? The only person she ever truly hated, truly feared, was herself...[break]
"I think about it everyday...," she trailed off, she didn't know, she didn't know anything about who she was, but how could she not wonder the worst, given that woman...[break][break]
Where he had trailed off, stopped in thought again, Yuina grew stiff at the question given. She glanced past him again, gloss washing over her eyes.[break]
"Yes...," she answered after a still moment, it was such an easy answer, one she didn't have to even think about...[break][break]
"But I could wake up tomorrow with another name, in another place, in another life... And then it won't matter if I wanted to be Yuina or not...," tears pricked at the corners of her eyes.[break][break]

The worst of herself was laid out to bear. She had everything to lose, but no choice in whether or not she could keep it, not when this path curated just for her could take her away just as easily as it put her there. If she was coming to an end of the path she was made to walk as a puppet, a shadow... If she was running out of time, she should make sure that those she cared for could be safe... From her...[break][break]
Exasperation came from Navy's visage, the mist in which he appeared made him no less real though as Yuina looked at him.[break][break]
'I'm going to help the Yuina Higashi I'm talking to today...'[break][break]

'I don't know any other 'you'. I only know you, Yuina Higashi...'

'I don't know what kind of person you'll be tomorrow, or the day after that...'[break][break]

Yuina's heart ached as Navy spoke, listening to his words, how it mirrored Doug's own from so long ago... There were too many people that cared too much for her... And she was so afraid of what it would come to when she wasn't Yuina Higashi any more.[break][break]
Navy went on though, his thoughts, how best to move forward oh so carefully, and Yuina paled. Tears welled at the corners of her haunted eyes, distress clear on her features, in her body... She'd spent so long hiding... So long trying to pretend that she was worth all of the good she tried to do... Would any of it be worth anything when her truth was laid out for all to know?[break][break]
"I--," her voice caught, mouth agape but no words, no breath escaped her. If everyone knew that she was a danger, a threat... their caution of her could save their lives if they didn't stand between her and that woman...[break][break]
"I do... want to keep them safe... One day that woman will come for me again, and I don't know what will happen if someone stands in her way..."
