It's a bitter pill for many to swallow, made far worse when one of those said children decides to step up and fill in the shoes that the adults have left. Many rangers tell her that she need not put herself at such risk. She pulls Razz's name from their lips and reminds them of the loss they face. Of the way he would have allowed her to do so, because she's proven herself capable, just like how Hideo Kino has.[break][break]

It's cruel, but it keeps them out of her way for the most part. Maybe garners her a few looks of disdain or pity. Nothing that she can't simply brush off or avoid with the excuse of going on a quick patrol.[break][break]

Up above, a small Skarmory flies onwards, steel wings glinting in the sun as he scouts the path ahead of them. His song is a beautiful one, one that really shouldn't be sung in a place as dangerous as this. One that should never have had to be suppressed, had the world been a little nicer, kinder.[break][break]

A walkie-talkie clipped to her belt, channels carefully monitored by a Rotom. The forest is eerily quiet, not a single drop of static to be heard. Nothing out of the ordinary, if ordinary was considered being devoid of life. Though nothing like the sensation of a tail wrapping around her wrist, she doesn't flinch at the lilac ribbons that rustle against her bandages.[break][break]

So close, yet still so far as she bears witness to the ferocious beast that attempts to hunt it down. Her heart screams as the limits of the body tether her to the ground. But in that panic, there is a spark of hope, a bitter red coalescing into solid chains that attempt to ensnare the Roaring Moon.

no amount of predatory instinct or optimised evolution can counteract the crippling effect that they have upon the paradox pokemon. no amount of screeching or struggling is enough to break their grasp. you grit your teeth. an avatar, hm? you're not familiar with this power, though that's hardly surprising. with how quickly the league has seemed to empty out their reserve stock of legends, you're sure you'll see plenty more of them begin to crop up soon.[break][break]

but none of them will hold a candle to your brilliant blazing flame. if they try? then their wax will melt and burn their hands. however useful a power it might be, its weakness is immediately evident to you.[break][break]

The exuded heat tenderly kissing her skin as the wall of magma attempts to swallow the magma bomb thrown her way. you watch the diminutive figure scramble to avoid your attack, only to be saved at the last minute by a plume of lava. heatran, hm? something about this situation almost seems familiar, in a twisted sort of way. could it be...? no. surely, even a skitty as curious as that would have enough good sense to stay far away from a place like this.[break][break]

more orichalcum trickles down your arm and down your fingers. well, if your prey wants to defense curl up, then so be it. you'll simply keep them pinned, and let your dragon do its damage![break][break]

and it is oh-so-eager. now free of its chains, it wastes no time in swooping down, wings outstretched and maw wide open. a jaw lock seeks to trap its imprisoner within a cage of their own, with bars of dagger-sharp ivory and chains of torn muscle.[break][break]

A hungry dragon released from its binds, a man that has ichor dripping down his fingertips. From the way he seizes control of the situation to the way he sizes her up like fodder for his pet. Every fibre of her being recognises this being as a threat drawing close to Cillian Quinn's strength.[break][break]

Parted maws eagerly seek her throat, sharpened teeth ready to sink into flesh if not for the Stone Edge that bursts from the earth. A brutal projectile, aimed oh so deliberately for the bottom jaw of the Roaring Moon. As that happens, deep indigo ribbons wrap around her arms, cold steel seated within her very grasp as they sing a hymn of guidance and bravery.[break][break]

There is nothing to be afraid of. Not this beast nor the man who commands it.

persistent, aren't they? if they were an ally, you would be impressed. but instead, they are an enemy, and that makes them little more than a cockroach that doesn't have the good sense to die. and frankly? it's really pissing you off.[break][break]

orichalcum pours faster and burns hotter. it spirals around itself and forms a molten javelin, a blazing spear that bubbles and boils with liquid death. as your fingers wrap around the haft, you hoist it back and narrow your eyes. taking aim only takes a second. summoning your strength half that. throwing it half again.[break][break]

as you make your throw, the roaring moon backs away. perhaps some unseen instinct has made it aware of what you're planning. perhaps it is simply trying to recover from the stone edge that has smashed its mouth and left cracks in its teeth. nevertheless, its momentary retreat does not mean a momentary reprieve. even from a distance, it continues its attack, launching a barrage of scale shot to try and keep its prey from fleeing the field.[break][break]

you will admit it. you are no Cillian Quinn. you lack his aptitude for ass-kissing, his talent for playing politics, his knack for torture and intimidation and the like. in those fields and many more, he outstrips you handily. but, there is one thing you are that he isn't.[break][break]

[attr="class","eris109"]The air crackles and snarls with the temper of a flaming beast, but it will not be the Roaring Moon that attempts to delivers her death sentence. From human hands is born a nova, a searing mass of heat that burns through a storm of razor sharp scales.[break][break]

Fight back.[break][break]

No, there is no fighting back against the wrath of a sun. No amounts of stone barriers that can be erected to stop its descent. Only the fading cries of a Heatran burned by fires hotter than their own, and a knight's desperate bid to defend as a scorching wave of heat bears down upon metal and flesh. And yet, death will have to wait yet another day to claim this damned roach.[break][break]

Against the yawning colours of a solar flare comes a grand explosion of pink, a molten gold gaze piercing through the curtain of finality. Their gem, though shattered, shines bright as this man's flames, a bitter trill falling from parted lips as their barrier just barely manages to withstand the attack.[break][break]

Behind this new presence, Eris remains. Her bandages and clothes sizzle and char a little at the ends, her cheeks and hands flushed red from the heat. But other than that, she and her pokemon are far from a pile of ashes and dust.[break][break]

"Me-"[break][break]

She reaches but is pushed back by a harsh psychic force, twin tails flicking in slow rhythm as the pixie never once tears their gaze from the man. With Azzy forcefully withdrawn into the safety of her pokeball, Eris can feel the pinpricks of instinct all over her skin. Against an avatar that knows how their powers can tear lives asunder, no one will blame her if she chooses to run.[break][break]

But despite the display of power, despite the way Mesprit tells her to leave, she stays. A simple throwing knife chucked with all of her strength, right for this stranger's head.[break][break]

"That was pretty rude of you, Mister."[break][break]

At her waist, a radio crackles to life, voices rising through the static as a Rotom continues to send distress signals over the channels.

the league's dogged persistence proves their boon just as much as it does your bane. psychic energy renders your attack null, and pushes your roaring moon back. all of a sudden, you find yourself fighting not a girl in over her head, but a legend - mespirit.[break][break]

your jaw clenches. so, this is eris halla after all. that certainly complicates things. but this isn't the first bumpy road you've had to cross, and it sure as fuck won't be the last.[break][break]

"what can i say? i'm a rude guy."[break][break]

as the knife soars towards you, you lazily tilt your head to the side. the biting edge misses your forehead, and instead only cuts a sliver out of your ear. you choke on a grunt as a little bit of bloody flesh tumbles to the ground, but that is all you do. you'll consider that penance, you suppose. after all, like it or not, you do owe this little sprite a favour, and thus, you owe its partner some courtesy.[break][break]

but not much.[break][break]

"now, fuck off." you snort, raising a hand and summoning your paradox pokemon back to your side. despite its obvious snarling contempt, it nevertheless obliges, though even you can't say how long that'll last. "get the hell out of here. go back to tossing rocks at trains, or stealing cigarettes from corner shops, or whatever kids do these days..."[break][break]
