nick listens with interest as josh discusses his team, his pride in his pokemon evident. it's a sentiment he understands all too well, the bond between trainer and pokemon running deep. but there's also a tinge of envy there, a longing for the days when his own team was whole, when he had a place in the world.[break][break]

"that's... impressive," he says, his voice tinged with admiration. "you've clearly put a lot of work into building that team. i'm sure they're grateful for your leadership."[break][break]

as they fly on, nick spots a pidgey fluttering nearby, its wings a blur as it darts through the air. on impulse, he reaches for a pokeball, his fingers curling around the cool metal. birds always sing to his heart, and the urge to add to his team is strong.[break][break]

"leonius, let's see if we can get that pidgey over there," he murmurs, guiding his altaria closer. the pokemon nods, a determined glint in his eye as he zeroes in on the tiny bird. as before, SING rings out once more, and the other bird's eyes begin to droop.[break][break]

with a well-aimed throw, nick sends the pokeball flying, the capsule striking the pidgey with a satisfying click. the bird disappears in a flash of light, the ball falling towards the ground below.

It wasn't just Josh's own leadership that tied his team together. It was his community; he treated everyone who worked at his Gym like extended family, many of his coworkers becoming good friends outside the workplace. "Thanks," Josh humbly expressed his gratitude. "We're just one giant family that does what we can to help one another. And that includes the rank and file at my Gym responsible for taking care of my Pokémon."

As simple as it was, the Pidgey capture from nicholas steele prompted Josh to reminisce upon his Johto days. "Takes me back to before I moved to Hoenn, seeing you make that catch. The first Pokémon I ever caught on my own was a Pidgey," he added, wishing he had brought the bird with him as he reined Yosei into a U-turn. They were getting a bit too close to Slateport City's skyline, and air traffic control had grown more strict over the Hoennian capital since the war escalated. "His name's Pazuzu. Still have him at my Gym today." Of course, he was a Pidgeot capable of Mega Evolution now. Being with a Gym Leader so long, it may have been hard to fathom how the Pokémon wouldn't have advanced to its final form by now.

nick can't help but smile at josh's story, a sense of camaraderie sparking between them. "those early captures... they stay with you, don't they?" he muses, his gaze distant. "no matter how long ago they were."[break][break]

he knows that feeling all too well, the memories of his first pokemon still vivid in his mind. the connection, the bond, it never fades. those moments, those triumphs, they become a part of you, woven into the fabric of your soul.[break][break]

he shakes his head, dispelling the nostalgia. "pazuzu, huh?" he chuckles softly. "well, i'm sure he's proud of how far he's come. and of you, too."[break][break]

as they turn back towards oldale town, the sun starting to dip below the horizon, nick reflects on the day's events. the captures, the rescues, the moments of shared understanding. it's been a long time since he's felt this connected to someone, this seen. josh may be younger, may have a different path in life, but there's a depth to him, an understanding that nick can't help but appreciate.[break][break]

nick glances headlong at the other man. "thanks for riding with me today."

"Until the day one of us dies," Josh added in an almost poetic tone as Yosei yielded to a passing Dragonite that seemed to be in a hurry. From what he could see, there were no markings or equipment it wore suggesting that it belonged to a trainer. It was truly a wild one - so rare to see outside Meteor Falls and the Sky Pillar. "Like Resheph did. Like Aslan did." Even seeing a wild Dragonite brought the dead dragon to mind. Regole was an obedient Dragonair, but she just wasn't the same.

The duo took a turn toward Oldale Town, landing not far outside its east gate. "It's a pleasure," he replied, dismounting and extending a hand. "There's something that tells me this isn't the last time we'll meet, either. If you need me, call Mauville Gym and ask for me. I'll answer." With that, the two parted ways, the Gym Leader withdrawing Zaborg and taking Zetalpa back to Mauville City.
