He acts beyond her expectations, always, but she's pleased to be in his arms all the same. She holds his face, thumbs his jaw. Openly, assesses him again. Is this a distraction or his desire? He was a man of action, so what he did was louder than what he said. [break][break]

"We are investing in your rest and recovery, Mr. Montgomery." She jabbed a playful finger to his chest. "You will be lying down and taking it." The good humor turned immediately to heat, and while she, too, waited for the implicit question to be answered, hers felt much more insistent than his own. Her only concession came after pulling him in for a kiss: "After, I will let you plead your case." Judge, jury, and executioner that she was.

"I'm takin' it? Someone's bossy." Not that he minded one bit.

He answer to her suggestion was to take her to bed, setting her down and relaxing back on the mattress. Montgomery tried to appear nonchalant and cool — but anticipation thrummed in his veins as he watched her.

"I'm very good a beggin' if I need ta."

When he yielded to her will, it set a fire within her. She made a million decisions every day, but her penchant for taking control never rewarded her so kindly as when she took it with Montgomery. It made it easier to hand the reigns over to him as the situation called for it. His faith in her, his trust, it was something she would often criticize in a Leaguer, but she couldn't find herself to warn him against it. If she was bad for him, she was too selfish to scare him off. [break][break]

With him beneath her, she had the opportunity to assess some of his physical strength and overall recovery. Or at least, that's what she told herself for being unable to resist him in her presence. He had her under his spell, and she had to work hard to avoid looking at that truth directly. [break][break]

After, side by side, she traced some of his scars and thought about his history with Howard. She had no doubts he really intended to kill the Rocket admin, but she was unsure how far along he already was in the process. Being bedbound gave one a lot of opportunity to consider revenge and several contingency plans. She had to ask, "What is your next step?"

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery's anger and fury was quelled by Ameena. The tight feeling he had been carrying since his skirmish with howard slayte all near faded away.

Almost.

In a post-orgasmic bliss, he nearly forgot about him. His hand was stroking through her hair, the other holding her close as her own fingers trailed across the multitude of scars upon his body.

The question shocked his system like an ice bath. Montgomery hoped that she didn't feel him tense up. Though her question was valid.

What did he do next?

"I dunno," he admitted softly, staring ahead at the wall in front of the bed. "I hadn't thought that far ahead. Honestly, I don't think much 'bout the future anymore."

Somewhat a lie. He thought about a future with her. But he didn't want to admit it. Not when he had tipetoed over the line of "merely using her as a means" with the text message he'd sent her that day.

"'Bout Howard?"

Ameena's breath caught as he said he didn't think about the future much anymore. She feared the worst. He was resilient, but everyone had limits. Avoiding the future was a symptom of a larger problem. Perhaps, she had underestimated howard slayte in more ways than one. "The future is all we have," she argued. In her own case, she obsessed over an alternate future that she would have to fight to obtain. [break][break]

"Howard's not someone you can underestimate." He knew that, clearly, but she couldn't help herself from fretting. "You need a plan, and you need allies." The silence after felt heavy - she could not offer herself to help him take down Howard. Howard could be key to a turning point in her research.[break][break]

It would hurt her to be rid of Howard, but it would hurt her to lose Montgomery. The best outcome was for their quarrel to be a series of stalemates. This was not, of course, a sentiment that a supportive girlfriend could offer. "You do not have to worry about it now," she conceded, rubbing at his jaw in the hopes of soothing any vengeful flames she might have stirred up in him.

"Howard's not someone you can underestimate."

Did she truly find him so weak? Or, did she find that sniveling pig too strong for him to handle?

"He's not the same man he was. I know better now." Montgomery's steely gaze didn't meet her purple one. Instead, he spoke to the ceiling. "That don't mean he ain't weak. And I'll find his weak spot. And I'll bring him down."

A bit of his irritation settled, as he finally glanced back at Ameena. "Like you?"

Would Ameena stand by him if it came down to a battle of death with howard slayte? Or would she watch him perish?

Her hand came to his jaw, as if she was trying to calm down a beast. However, with a heavy sigh and one last glance at his lover, Montgomery shifted onto his side, facing the wall as he pretended some sort of tiredness overcame him.

She shut down immediately at his challenge. All emotion left her face and she waited, like a scientist in an observation hall or a sniper adjusting for wind. She instructed herself not to feel hurt at the question, though something angry tore its way through regardless. She would never ask him to turn his hand against Navy. Her wounds from battle with him had been superficial, but had they been debilitating, she would not have asked it of Montgomery. [break][break]

In two words, he offers her a chilling ice bath to clear her head of the warm but foolish reality it had previously been living in. She had been stupid to think progressively chipping at his oath to the League would lead him to her side. As he turned away, the space between them felt too small. She felt suffocated by it. [break][break]

How much of her life had she organized around him lately? [break][break]

The sight of him turned away from her was sobering enough for her to leave the bedroom and then the complex altogether. Not home, but some other place that held nothing of value. She belonged to her lab and her studies alone.
