Things go bump in the night, and that might just be why River is out this late. Maybe he's looking for something to go bump, to give him a reason, any reason, to pick a fight. [break][break]

Instead, he stumbles upon someone who, even in the dim light of twilight, looks like the type of punk who might be out looking for a skull to bash. He's faintly intimidating, especially with the lumbering creature that stays at his side. [break][break]

Even still, the warning signs don't stop him, not even when he picks up on the kicked pebbles, the frustration.[break][break]

"Someone take a shit in your shoe or somethin'?"[break][break]

River tilts his head, gazing at him with clear blue eyes and a smirk spread across his mouth.

River isn't expecting the stunned response from the man. Perhaps it's because he's looking for a fight - looking for some weak little punk to throw punches at. It's more than likely he's had a bad run today and is looking for a punching bag. [break][break]

So for Adrian to respond with indifference and dismissal, when River is so clearly looking to pick a fight, it throws the boy off his game.[break][break]

"No."[break][break]

He furrows his brow, confounded. And then there's a raucous noise and a flutter of wings and some Murkrow has picked a fight with a Loudred for ruining it's beauty sleep. However, in the end, the bird turns out to be more loud and annoying than the Loudred.[break][break]

"Shinx, shut that stupid bird up."[break][break]

From behind one of River's boots pops a very cute lion cub. The Pokemon growls, though it sounds more like a mewl, and she charges for the Murkrow. Her fur sparks and grows heavier with electricity before she finally zaps the bird. It falls to the ground and twitches, eyes staring straight ahead in surprise as paralysis prevents it from fighting back.[break][break]

"Perfect, finally."[break][break]

River throws a pokeball at the bird and turns to see that Adrian is moving on without him.[break][break]

"Hey! Where do you think you're going? I was talkin' to you!"[break][break]

River doesn't hesitate in his pursuit and he's not really sure why. Maybe it's because he's hungry for a fight, hungry for social interaction, just hungry. This guy seems like his cup of tea, the perfect distraction for whatever messed up shit he's been dealing with by himself.[break][break]

But when presented with him, with the opportunity to stop him for a chat when he very clearly isn't interested - he finds himself at a loss for words. His confidence is a facade. River Montgomery is nothing but a shell of a person, a half-assed mask on top of a fucked up kid.[break][break]

"You looked lonely, I guess."[break][break]

Wow, River.[break][break]

A flurry of feathers startles him. Maybe it was him the whole time that was on edge. Maybe it was him that was lonely. Walking around in the dark was certainly giving him the heeby jeebies.[break][break]

Perhaps River had a knack for sneaking his way into people's lives. Perhaps.. that's why Adrian responds the way he does. [break][break]

He's taken aback and genuinely surprised when he finally relents, and he's not sure why. Hadn't he wanted this strange boy to agree to walk with him? Why had that even been, anyway? What had possessed River to venture out into the forest late at night and bully some poor guy into chatting?[break][break]

"I dunno, you seem like the type of dude to knock me out and steal my shit or something. How do I know you're not some sort of weirdo?"[break][break]

He turns the interrogation back around to Adrian, feigning innocence or something along those lines. Maybe he's just being witty and redirecting the suspicion he'd received only moments ago. [break][break]

But River approaches cautiously, blinking slowly as the break in the canopy of trees highlights the paleness of his face and the white of his hair. There's a smirk pressing a dimple into his one cheek as he sizes up the stranger he's so confidently approached.[break][break]

Yes, yes he had stolen his line. It was intentional.[break][break]

And yes, he definitely did notice the dramatic half-pause that Adrian takes as he is granted full view of River's appearance. Yes, he knows how absolutely beautiful he is - well, if he's well-rested and hasn't been abusing.[break][break]

Of course, the boys reaction coming across as a snide remark only drives home River's satisfaction. People only shit-talked what they were jealous of, or were afraid to admit they appreciated.[break][break]

"Way to hit the nail on the head, pal. Girls do love me."[break][break]

And then Adrian introduces himself and River runs a hand through his hair. Maybe he's going to far with the charm, though.[break][break]

"River, yes, like the body of water. My parents weren't clever."[break][break]
