a cage topples from its stack and marcel darts forward to catch it. "why did i choose this route?" he groaned. he knew exactly why: it was discreet, a blind spot in the league's surveillance. this was an opportunity not to be wasted, hence the size of their cargo.

the van shakes again, marcel nearly trips. "hey! mind driving a bit more carefully over there?" despite the trace of irritation, there's no real hostility to his words.

Gavin can hear the rattle of cages in the back of the van each time they hit some bump in the road or another, but there is little to be done about their plight. There's a reason this particular route was a blind spot: the roads were long due for maintenance, pockmarked with pot holes and fractures.[break][break]

The van shakes again, and Marcel calls for caution from the back.[break][break]

"Not much I can do about it, sir." Though formal in acknowledgement of Marcel's status as an admin, Gavin's tone is unapologetic. "Have you seen this road? It's a nightmare."[break][break]

They drive over another bump, punctuating his words with unfortunate reality. With one hand on the wheel, the other lifts to straighten his glasses, which had been jostled by the tremor.

While the League might not think to look for a cargo truck down this route, Emma knew damn well they'd be here. In this situation, she was the odd woman out - neither working for or against the League. She was merely here to intervene and cause trouble - to hopefully put a stop to the poke-trafficking altogether.[break][break]

What she didn't realise, however, was just who was driving the vehicle. It appeared the people involved in the trafficking would be two familiar faces to her, two faces she didn't expect to be participating in such shady activities.[break][break]

The woman sits, poised, on the side of a hill overlooking the truck as it jostles and bumps its way across the gravel. Just as one tire hits another pothole, it explodes, the tire tears from it's wheel well and splits off. Sparks fly and the truck lurches to the side as it eventually comes to a screeching halt.[break][break]

The Wolfe looks up from the scope of her rifle, a grim line pressed into her lips as she gets to her feet and replaces the weapon against her back.

they've come to a stop, it seems. marcel mulls over the situation for a moment. he releases his dragonair, making the tight space even more cramped. "protect the van."
[break][break]the back door swings open under the safety of the force-field. he groans as he sees the state of their tire. "have we got a spare?" he asks as he begins to circle the van, trying to spot anyone nearby. the protect doesn't make things easier, his surroundings now slightly blurred and overcast in blue.

The truck lurches hard, and Gavin's thankful for his seatbelt as he's jerked sideways with the momentum, grip instinctively tightening on the wheel as he fights fruitlessly to regain control of the vehicle. Marcel is shouting from the back but Gavin can't make out the words over the screech of metal against damaged asphalt, heart slamming in his chest as they come to a halt.[break][break]

He allows himself but a split second to gather his nerves before he's out of the truck and ducking against it for cover, eyes scanning the visible horizon to pick out potential threats. That had not been a pothole.[break][break]

Spotting no one on this side, he sends his Corviknight to circle overhead. It iron defenses and metal feathers would, hopefully, shield it from gunfire.[break][break]

"Yeah," Gavin replies, already crouching down in preparation to slide under the truck. "It's underneath; cover me, I'll handle it. Do you see anything?"[break][break]

Rough road scrapes at exposed skin, but Gavin is impervious to anything but his task.

Emma approaches slowly, methodically, without fear. While unaware of whoever was driving the truck, she's unafraid of them. She spots a few Pokemon putting up defenses and circling the vehicle and she hesitates for only a moment. A glance is cast over her shoulder, as if looking for something, before she sits on top of a hill and aims her rifle down.[break][break]

There's only a small, muted gasp as the sight focuses on marcel maeda. Unexpected.[break][break]

Her finger brushes the trigger but she doesn't fire. Instead, she takes note of each individual outside of the vehicle, biding her time.[break][break]

Someone is crawling underneath the truck in search of the spare tire, and a Corviknight circles from above. It wouldn't take long before the bird spotted her, if it hadn't done so already. [break][break]

The woman continues her approach, and, when within earshot, begins to speak.[break][break]

"You disappoint me further, Kosuke. Poke-trafficking now? Is that what you've resorted to? What your.. family, has resorted to?"[break][break]

She nearly spits on the word 'family', the same expression that Cadis had used in such a singsong manner.

belle launches an attack, her second protect having failed. marcel realises the situation around the same time he finally catches sight of their company. he holds out an arm and belle jerks her head, the ice beam hitting a nearby tree.

there's a small sigh of relief, though emma's words make sure he's not at ease for long.
[break][break]
"this isn't new for us and you know it." he glances back at the van, hoping gavin was concentrating on the tire. "we're not harming anyone, this is just business."

Corviknight does indeed spot Emma, an unfamiliar figure to the hulking metal bird, and it crows a warning loud enough for all to hear. As Belle's protective field flickers and fades, the Corviknight beats its shining wings and gets ready to assist in a potential attack.[break][break]

Tilting his head, Gavin sees Marcel's boots; he's joined by someone else, and the scientist tenses, but the woman's voice is familiar to him.[break][break]

A sharp whistle from under the truck instructs the Corviknight to hold off.[break][break]

He can hear Emma scolding Marcel and the admin's response, but Gavin doesn't crawl out from underneath until the spare tire is in his grasp. Brushing dirt and asphalt from his knees, he looks over the hood of the truck.[break][break]

"They're in better hands with us than some of the others, Wolfe. Shooting our tire was a risk, though." A dry, biting edge clips his tone. "Could've killed the Pokemon along with us."[break][break]

He crouches down next to where their front-right tire had once been and inspects the damage done to the wheel well. Not ideal, but he thinks it'll get them to their destination, at least.[break][break]

He straightens back up, scowling.[break][break]

"Did you see the jack when you were in the back, sir?"[break][break]

It was a mess of upturned cages and uncomfortable Pokemon now; he didn't want to go digging through that mess if he didn't have to.

Her gaze scopes the toppled cages, to the broken wheel well. She shakes her head, eyes narrowed and expression firm and angry.[break][break]

"You're a fool."[break][break]

Someone from underneath the truck has managed to wrassle the spare tire out from under the hunk of heavy metal. She pays no attention to the Corviknight staring holes into her back.[break][break]

"I don't care about the Pokemon - I care about who's getting these Pokemon, about what they might be used for. Rocket is funding dangerous people, their own people. If these Pokemon are dead or missing, whoever they're for will be weaker. I'm in the business of keeping dangerous Pokemon out of dangerous people's hands, Kosuke. You know that."[break][break]

Her attention slides to the man who has attempted to assert some form of dominance, accusing her of harming the Pokemon. Her pointed discussion tacks on the fact that she doesn't give a fuck about what happens to the Pokemon - they aren't important to her.

gavin's question gives him time to think. he buys himself some time as he turns to him, thinking before answering, "yeah, it should be." truthfully, he couldn't remember.

he switches back to emma. "you can do whatever you want after we've made our delivery." marcel couldn't care less about what happened once his job was complete, so long as he covered his bases he'd done what was asked of him. he was a deliveryman: nothing more and nothing less in this moment.

quieter, he adds, "come on, you know my ass is on the line here." emma understood what failure meant to them, and while cadis stubborn stuck to more benevolent airs, he didn't fancy pushing his luck.

'Should be' is hardly the confirmation he'd hoped for, but it seems it's all Marcel can offer. Gavin hides any disappointment between his usual mask of annoyed disinterest.[break][break]

He narrows his eyes at Emma.[break][break]

"So you don't care about the Pokemon; what about us? You think they'll just let it slide if we fuck this up?"[break][break]

Marcel had changed after his compromised mission all those years ago. Though he'd never been given details, he could surmise that something was awry. Their friendship had been a point of uncertainty for Gavin ever since, especially after Marcel had left the organization for a time... he still wasn't entirely sure where they stood. He's too proud, too stubborn to ask.[break][break]

He hops into the back of the truck, frowning at the mess. Emma might've been cavalier about the fate of the Pokemon, but Gavin finds himself checking on them as he hunts for the jack. None dead, but there were some injuries.[break][break]

How much'll that cost us? He grimaces, ignores the cold creep of fear.[break][break]

Emerging with the jack in hand, he wedges it beneath the truck and gets to work, still well within earshot of the others.

But it's when her friend whispers to her discreetly, insisting that his ass was on the line, that's when his words hit a nerve. She knew what it was like to fail Rocket, she knew the consequences. The Rocket that had raised her, built her, was not kind. [break][break]

Her fist clenches as she thinks about her decision.[break][break]

Gavin speaks up and asks her thoughts on their safety and her expression doesn't change. A younger Emma wouldn't have given a damn about either of them, would have readily sacrificed them for herself. [break][break]

This Emma had grown soft, developed a friendship with Marcel that complicated her motives. And Marcel is the reason she relents.[break][break]

"Fine."[break][break]

The assassin's firm expression relaxes only slightly as she glances back at Marcel. But the sound of Gavin underneath the vehicle, trying to fix it, causes her to snap in frustration.[break][break]

"But hurry up and get out of here so I can deal with this without either of you."

"whenever you're ready." he says to gavin as he climbs into the truck. halfway in, marcel spots a stray cage from the corner of his eye. he sighs.

"could you get that too?" he motions towards the appletun, "check if it's injured. we can't give it away if it is." he could talk his way out of one pokemon missing, but if they offered goods that weren't up to standards, marcel feared that would be a contact lost.
