It is no wonder that the new team rocket requires him much more effort to crawl his way back to the upper regiment of the organization's food chain even when he has served time during the Kanto and Johto invasions. After all, there is an unspoken animosity between the group’s older and newer faction and the only way to settle the trust issues among the older membership is to test the waters of their commitment for the organization’s cause.

Members have managed to gather enough steel to start engineering the new rocket headquarters, but they are still short of few resources to finish its other facilities.

Valerio finally arrived at the clearing of Route 116 after Darty gave him a lift. The place was few miles outside Rustboro, surrounded by verdant trees leading to Rusturf Tunnel. What they needed to do there, Valerio had no idea. He was just following orders.

And so he waited for his partner to arrive.

Gavin emerges from the shadowy mouth of the Rusturf tunnel with his Klinklang following noisily behind, its gears whirring and clicking as it assesses an unfamiliar entity. Though it was not the first time Gavin had interacted with the Rocket veteran, many of his Pokemon could not say the same.[break][break]

Apparently, the synthetic Pokemon detected no reason for alarm, settling down into an idle silence as it hovered next to its master.[break][break]

Aggron takes up the rear, slowly emerging from the tunnel with a grumble like the shifting of mountains.[break][break]

"I see your Pokemon evolved." He admires the spectral dragon for a moment before returning to the task at hand. "We're searching for a member of the Porygon evolutionary line. Are you familiar with them?"

Gavin’s profile is a feast for days, something which Valerio relished upon even after he noticed that the grunt’s Darty evolved.

“I’m glad you noticed,” he was smiling sheepishly in contrast to the more serious lad. “How about me? Notice anything different?”

Gavin proceeded to discuss their purpose in the uneventful place. Apparently, they were going to hunt for porygons. “I had a few of them back in Kanto.” He replied. “Metal ducks, eh?”

The rocket grunt scanned the perimeter to catch a sight of the rare pokémon. It is hard to create one in a laboratory but it is even harder to spot one in the wilds. “No sighting so far but there is a kangaskhan nearby. Do you mind if I spend the time catching new mons, too?”

Valerio commanded his dragapult with a barrage of attacks at the marsupial. It did a combo of THUNDER WAVE and DRAGON DARTS before his trainer hurled a pokéball towards his target. He was hoping for a successful catch.

Afterwards, Valerio attempted to start a small talk. “So how’s your first days as an underboss?”

Though aware of Valerio's lingering gaze, Gavin doesn't acknowledge it — his lips purse in a thoughtful frown as he studies the other for a moment in the wake of his question.[break][break]

"No," he decides. "Should I?"[break][break]

He huffs a near-silent laugh at the mention of metal ducks. It's not an entirely inaccurate description, after all.[break][break]

"By all means." He flicks his wrist. "There's a strong chance we won't see anything at all, might as well spend wasted time wisely."[break][break]

The Kecleon doing its best to blend in with its surroundings does not go unnoticed by Gavin's trained eye, but he allows it the false security as he turns away. Klinklang clicks and hums as it scans the treeline.[break][break]

"Busy," he replies, vague but true. "Plenty of work to be done on the Floating Garden, and all."

“About that,” Valerio pursed his lips as he pick up the kangaskhan; he was trying his best to keep hus thoughts about the headquarter to himself, but he gave in anyway. “Who would name that the ‘Floating Garden’?”

The grunt has been bothered ever since he heard of the plan. “I mean, you guys missed the opportunity to name it something funky like, ‘Ferocious Flying Fortress’,” his hands were panning in the air as he spoke, “Or maybe, ‘the Ark’.”

Looking intently at his blonde companion, Valerio recollected the first and last time they met on a mission. He was actually glad porygons were rare in the area that they got to spend the day longer than usual. There was something about Gavin that made him want to discover the story behind his serious demeanor. If there’s any.

“Also, if you’re that busy, why bother looking for porygons we you can easily order someone else to do it for you? You’re the underboss!” Valerio teased.

A blissey rolled in from one of the trees, to which Darty summoned another THUNDER WAVE-DRAGON DARTS combo and made the pokémon submit to the ground. His pokéball soon connected with the healer creature.

"The boss, of course." Valerio seems critical of the name, but Gavin does not share the sentiment. "I don't know, I think there's a certain elegance about it. An irony, as well."[break][break]

It did not sound like the lair of villains and beasts; perhaps that was why he liked it so much.[break][break]

A yawning Munna drifts lazily into view, and Gavin covers his mouth as he yawns in turn. Thankfully, he's able to shake off the unnatural drowsiness and the pink creature continues on its way unhindered.[break][break]

"If you want a job done well, do it yourself," he quotes. "Porygon are rare. There's no guarantee a grunt won't cut and run if they actually find one."

“That’s fair.” Valerio noted Gavin’s comment. For these artificial pokémons were rare, people often hid the fact thet they found one in the wild. His Kanto experience proved him so. “If I do find one, I’ll also run away from the gang and earn me some moolas.”

Strong wind blew past the duo as Valerio picks up the captured blissey. From the clouds, a drampa hovered above the wilderness. Valerio hissed—still no sign of a porygon.

“Back to the issue at hand: I think there’s something wrong with the headquarters and maybe it’s not just with the name.” The veteran chose his next words thoughtfully, careful not to offend his bosses, if ever. “Imagine if things got worse and we got discovered, what will people think of a ‘floating garden’ spying on the region?”

Gavin scoffs. "Well, now if you disappear, I'll know why."[break][break]

Valerio seems concerned with the prospect of Rocket being discovered, and Gavin can empathize. He'd grown comfortable in his civilian identity and the anonymity provided by Rocket's underground nature. He had a nice house, a good life.[break][break]

"If we're discovered, we'll have more problems than public perception," he points out. His gaze wanders to a Tauros pawing at the ground, then snaps back to Valerio's. His amber gaze burns into the other Rockets. "When we get discovered, everything's going to change. We have to be ready for that."[break][break]

The Tauros rethinks its plans to charge upon being faced with Gavin's towering Aggron, and the thunder of its hooves upon retreat punctuates Gavin's words.[break][break]

“Who says I’m actually leaving you?” Valerio teased, wink flashed towards his company. “Besides, I have nowhere else to go even if I find one. Rocket is already my family, you know?”

A xatu shared the wandering cincinno’s aggression, but it was only for a moment before the dragapult imposed its ferocious presence into the wild creatures. Likewise, Gavin also shared his sympathy for the grunt’s concern, even more serious than what he expected from the underboss.

“I’m pretty much a wanted criminal myself, relishing behind the veil of this region’s ignorance.” The humor was an attempt to vibe up the sullen mood. “The Johto invasion already did a number on me. I say these potential new adjustments are not totally new. How about you?”

Family.[break][break]

The word, to Gavin, surfaces memories both good and bad. It's been a long time since he set foot on Galarian soil, subjected himself to the incredibly strict expectations of his family. In many ways, Rocket has become family in their place.[break][break]

"I have been very careful to keep my business dealings separate from my... personal endeavors."[break][break]

The vague statement is accompanied by a wry smile; the implications are obvious enough. He is not who he claims to be, not even to Rocket themselves. Only the individuals closely associated with the Order and Cadis himself knew the real truth.[break][break]

"Should this identity be compromised, I will find another. I'm rather fond of my house, though." The earth quakes beneath them as his Aggron stomps her foot at the Cinccino. "So my fingers are crossed."
