Just the mention of Mossdeep inspires visible discomfort from her, almost as if the memory he dredges up is far more recent than she might care to admit. It had been months since Mossdeep, but mere weeks since her own stupidity had driven her into the arms of Kyle's plans.[break][break]

"And I'm grateful for it. They're heroes. Had they not been there, I'm afraid to think that might have come of Mossdeep."[break][break]

Her fingers drum against the table, a nervous tick. There's something else on her mind that she neglects to share. Instead, she merely listens while he drills her about how great her peers are, as if she isn't already aware of how she might pale in comparison.[break][break]

He clicks his tongue.

"True heroes died that day. Many of them. Ones we don't hear about. Ones that I would never consider to be Elite Four. Ones that were less important than either of them."

He said it. Too late now to turn back.

"The Elite Four are allowed to be selfish as long as the end goal ensures the region survives. Sacrifices can and should be made. Your job is no longer to save the weak but to survive and defeat the strong."

Is it hot in here? It feels hot in here. Not even her water can sate the dryness that persists now in her mouth. Like chalk between her teeth, her own disbelief is suspended while witnessing the severity of his words. [break][break]

"Is there another word you would use, then? To describe what they are."[break][break]

Because it's clear in his tone that he doesn't truly consider them heroes. Not in the same way she meant it.[break][break]

"Less important? Are you serious?"[break][break]

Disbelief runs rampant in her expression. It takes everything she has to keep her voice steady, to not cause a scene. She's hearing what he's saying, but it turns her blood to ice.[break][break]

Or to fire, rather.[break][break]

"Is that how you might have described our parents - your parents? Less important?"[break][break]

It leaves a bitter taste in her mouth.

"No."

Her assumption is wrong. Naturally, because she doesn't understand him. Everything will not always be fine just because he's Fernando. That's a crucial mistake that everyone makes because no one understands him.

To himself, there is no one more important than himself, but in accordance with his own ideology.

"I was less important. All of us were, individually. They should have prioritized themselves. As long as one of us lived, they could rebuild and restructure around whoever survived."

He doesn't miss a beat.

"But life didn't end up like that."

Stormy swallows her pride, swallows the burning pit in her stomach. She looks away, masking the angry tears that threaten to break her facade of control. She had overstepped, made an ass out of herself, jumped to a conclusion she didn't actually believe herself. [break][break]

But it almost hurts more to hear him say that all of us were unimportant. It drives the knife into the open wound she still bears. It reaffirms a truth she'd been fighting to make sense of for a long time.[break][break]

"That isn't true. You are important, and one of us did live to rebuild. You did."[break][break]

She draws her hands away from the table, nails making a brief noise as they scratch against the wood. They settle in her lap and she swallows.

It's a hard fact to swallow but Fernando has always embraced the bigger picture. His actions will always pursue his own self interest but his mind is sharp enough to see the world through an objective lens. It's the same reason he lacks the trauma from his childhood, paying the beast no mind and accepting the carnage racked against his clothed torso.

"It could've been any of us. Silph Co. is too large to fall. It would look different, yes, but it would still be standing with one of us at the helm. I was lucky and our parents were unfortunate, presumably."

To this day, only three people know the truth. Fernando has come to accept the lie as his own and remains just as oblivious as Bronwen.

"As an Elite Four, you need to make the right choice. You cannot rely on luck."

Where Fernando may lack the trauma of his childhood, Stormy's growth has come as a direct result of it. Her trial of overcoming her anger and her fear has put her on the pedestal she sits on today.[break][break]

"Is Silph Co. what you wanted?"[break][break]

The question comes out of nowhere, and the heat in her tone is replaced with something much softer. It occurs to her then, that she had been groomed to take over the company. While she had clearly never really been considered for it, she had remained an option should her predecessors fall.[break][break]

But had anyone actually wanted to take over? Had he?[break][break]

"I will make whatever choice I deem the right one."

It's avoidance but it's true. Although no one would agree with his methods, it's the only route he has to sculpting the world into what it should be. Hoenn turned out better for it and now all he has to handle are the forces outside of his control.

Stormy dips her head, unsure at first how to respond. His answer isn't what she was expecting, but it tells a truth regardless. [break][break]

"I want to help you, you know. I know we don't see eye to eye but I'm trying to."[break][break]

Unfortunately, his next comment encourages unease from her. Self-doubt in the shadow of his concern makes her uncomfortable. Warmth spreads from her hand and she moves to stand.[break][break]

"If there's nothing further you need from me, I'd like to go."[break][break]

Regardless of the outcome, her hand laid flat against the table would leave a burn mark the shape of her fingers. She would not notice this.

The burn marks goes unnoticed as well. His eyes are still glued to the backside of her figure, watching her leave, anticipating his next move.

'You're important now.'

The last comment never comes out because he knows it'll only unravel her.
