“i’m sure it is.” valerio breaks a piece from the beef jerky before placing all of it inside the pot. he lays some tinder on the re-arranged firewood, thanks to patrick. he then retrieves a ball and summons lean, his alolan marowak, to make the fire for him. “now, let’s start cooking.”[break][break]

the decadent smell of cured meat wraps their entire surrounding, drawing near a few of the pokémons that lingered the wilderness. he reaches for the can of tomatoes to put into the soup but then he notices something different from the sauce: black instead of red, with little hints of yellow. he flinches, the laddle points toward the grimer as marowak and sobble rush to defend their dinner. patrick tackles the creature but its poison touch makes sobble yelp in pain. lean retaliates, throwing the blazing bone club towards it and burning the target. a capsule follows after to keep the grimer contained and safe.[break][break]

valerio sighs. he recalls sobble into his ball—he’ll deal with it later. then a nervous chuckle escapes his worried expression. “heh. it could be worse.”[break][break]

With Rockruff tuckered out, Gavin sends another to help guard the makeshift camp. His Alolan Ninetales is as aloof as it's graceful, its tails swaying in the breeze as its sharp eyes scan the surroundings. Snow falls gently around the dual-type, who turns his head to direct a blizzard toward a burrowing Trapinch drawn by the scent of food.

Gavin observes Valerio at work, raising an eyebrow at the nervous laughter and the strange-colored sauce.

"I'm guessing you expected a different result."

heavy faced valerio scans through his bag for more any remaining provision. upon the sight of canned goods, he immediately lights up. “i hope you're fond of canned sausages. i can still roast some potatoes.”[break][break]

from afar, the sight of crawdaunt approaching already triggers valerio. the redhead whistles for his marowak to handle it, tossing a spare ball after the ghost-type's retaliation.[break][break]

It doesn't look very promising; Valerio's weighted expression betrays as much. The older man seems to perk up upon finding a canned something-or-other, and Gavin shrugs.

"Whatever you want to do. You do this often?"

He's not sure if the compromised meal is a regular occurrence or an unfortunate accident.

His Ninetales is accosted by a wild Palpitoad and its toxic spray; a heal bell chimes through the rocky area before Ninetales retaliates by spreading a misty terrain and catching it off-guard with dazzling gleam.

It sits back down when the deed is done, chin lifted and tails curled delicately around its small paws, and Gavin throws a ball at its victim.

valerio witnesses the shadows forming above him, an alolan exeggutor peeking over his provision. from its neck, loops of forest fruits twirl as an offering while expecting food in exchange. he beams with delight and accepts the berries.[break][break]

Gavin's eyebrows lift, a scoffed chuckle rising in his throat. "I meant camping, actually. It's quite a different thing to cook over a fire than a stove."

He's a capable cook himself, having lived on his own for the better part of his adulthood, but he does not offer any help. Valerio's struggling with the lid of the pot when a shadow falls upon them, and Gavin's gaze is directed skyward. He'd heard of the tall Alolan creatures, but it was quite a different thing to be standing in its shade.

At least this one seems friendly.

A Sneasel bursts from the shadows and starts to climb its trunk; not wanting to scare off their new source of food, Gavin signals to his Ninetales and the ice fox hypnotizes its prey, sending it crashing back to earth where Gavin is able to reach it with a pokeball.

with a few more ingredients to make up for the lost ones, valerio attempts to recreate a curry that is slightly different from the one he made before. even when he's busy with food, his story comes out like he has been used to narrating his experiences to other people.[break][break]

“they've made us camp out as a child so we can get used to the wilderness. you can call it like a dragon slayer's rite of passage.”[break][break]

marowak helps setting the fire and preparing the berries by smashing them with his bone club while valerio is slicing the sausage with precision.[break][break]

it is only then that he noticed the alolan exeggutor to be gone, only to return with more berries and friends. behind the grass dragon, a nidoqueen approaches with a nestful of mushrooms. “you wanna eat with us too, eh?” he pats the creature's head and accepts the offering and signals for it to lay down with them around the campfire.[break][break]
