amidst this exhausting summer, valerio puts on his cotton long-sleeves and treks through the mountain path in hopes to reach the plateau by night fall. they are still a few steps away from their destination. patrick, the sobble needs to keep his mouth shut.[break][break]

“try to cry again and i’ll leave you right here.” he stops taunting patrick as soon as he hears strides approaching him, his hand starts reaching into his pocket, a pokéball by his fingertips.[break][break]

Gavin hasn't wandered far from his Fallarbor residence before the sobbing echoes through the route. Rockruff hears it first, the blue-furred pup's ears lifting as it pauses to locate the source of the sound.[break][break]

"Don't even—"[break][break]

Rockruff whines with the admonishment and flops back on its haunches, obedient but pleading as it fixes Gavin with literal puppy-dog eyes. He aims for stern and unyielding, but a twitch of his lip betrays him.[break][break]

"All right, fine, we'll go check it out."[break][break]

They do not try to be stealthy on their approach — Gavin steps light by default, and Rockruff's paw steps are muffled in the sand. Gavin recognizes Valerio before he calls out, and the threat elicits a deep, throaty laugh.[break][break]

"Or else?" he asks with a feral smile, stepping closer because he's like that. "Pray tell, what will you do?"

Gavin's expression barely shifts but for the way his brows arch to meet his hairline. "I'd like to see you try it."[break][break]

He's neither coy nor threatening in tone. He remains ever uncertain if Valerio is trying to get a rise out of him with such comments, or if it was simply a friendly needling to reference the other's obvious affection for him. People were strange.[break][break]

His attention shifts down to his own boots: hiking boots, no less, with deep treads. "And here I thought you'd done your research on me." He looks over his shoulder at the fading Fallarbor skyline. "I live nearby."[break][break]

Rockruff yelps in alarm as its excited yaps disturb a Seismatoad. The lumbering creature goes back to its nap as soon as the pup quiets down.

valerio shakes his head, giggling. he appreciates the underboss always receiving his remarks with patience and understanding. gavin judges him, since it is what people do, but he does so respectfully without harming their mutual understanding. ever calculated. cunning when needed. he admires him for these traits he possesses.[break][break]

“i thought you don’t want me following you?” valerio sneers. contrary to what gavin might assume, he knows he’s a fallaborian. is it what they are called?[break][break]

valerio whistles, calling back sobble as the lizard runs past through a wooper of similar size, running with it in circles before his trainer whistles once more. “but... i do know you scavenge for fossils,” patrick climbs from his arms to his shoulders before his trainer continues trekking through the grasslands leading to meteor falls. “day off? is that why you’re here?”[break][break]

The response is light; Gavin's not even looking at Valerio, gaze fixed upon an oddly shaped rock he'd swear just moved. Sure enough, a Spiritomb emerges.[break][break]

A sharp whistle gets Rockruff's attention. Still young, still learning, the only way it knows to play is to PLAY ROUGH. It pounces on the specter and rakes it with claws shrouded in pink mist. Gavin throws a pokeball.[break][break]

"Scavenging," he repeats, nose wrinkling. "A crude word for my efforts. And I don't take days off. I go where I'm needed, when I'm needed; it just so happens that I'm not needed right this minute."[break][break]

If Walsh, Dominic, or any of the other agents of rank were to request his presence, however, his Corviknight was on stand-by.

for someone who’s been with the underboss for quite some time now, valerio knows his articulation matters to him. is it intentional or not? either way, the man has a reputation for being so tactless.[break][break]

he snuggles patrick from his shoulder before the lizard leaps to take down something behind the bush. an inkay appears, roughly patrick’s size, on the field. water pulses from his mouth to the psychic-type’s body, immediately taking away its consciousness. sobble bunts on valerio’s hiking boots; he’s asking for the inkay to be his new playmate. he obliges.

“care to add me in your schedule?” he returns to gavin. valerio drops his pack and retrieves the tent. sobble sees this and runs off to the wild to find some barks for fire.[break][break]

Gavin's attention is drawn immediately to a Sableye who watches them from a crevice in the rock. The gleam of its gemstone eyes give it away, and the Rocket keeps his attention trained on it even as he entertains Valerio's question.[break][break]

"That entirely depends. What for?" He's expecting a jest, perhaps more flirting, but keeps his tone neutral in case it's something serious.[break][break]

A silent hand signal urges Rockruff forward. After its successful assault on the Spiritomb, the rambunctious pup sees no reason to change up its strategy: once more it PLAYS ROUGH with the wild Pokemon, yapping as it tries to flush the dual-type from its hole. Though it manages to fake out Rockruff long enough to slash at it with shadowy claws, it has nowhere to run.[break][break]

When it falls, unconscious, Gavin has to wedge his arm into the gap to tap it with a ball.

he blazes the firewoods and the nincada draws closer into the flare before valerio halts its strides. patrick picks up a spare capsule at the rocket's belt and falls down the ground, rolling into the bug before her voice is finally contained.[break][break]
