"They're not ducks, they're a Dod-" Zac never got to finish the thought, as a final burst of fireworks painted the sky behind him with charming designs, and workshopped slogans. "You should have gone with 'The taste is to die for'," Zac suggested. "Or '6-feet of flavor!'. Actually that doesn't make any sense."

Zac juggled the Groudon Cannon as he went to shake Sam's hand. "Yeah, uh, great match," he said, shifting the huge weapon from shoulder, to armpit, then back to his shoulder. "We should do this again-" Zac dropped the cannon, and the last remnants of Chimchar's fire lit the wick.

WHOOOOOOSH!...........

KRA-KOOOM!



Zac stared, open-mouthed, as the fireworks broke over the bay. They went on for a good few minutes, turning the sky crimson, disrupting air traffic, and no doubt scaring the shit out of some local Wingull. 

As the insanity wore itself out, Zac turned to Sam. "I've got it. Our slogan. 'Bailey Cooper approved.'"

Nidoking sat back up, blinking water from its eyes as it searched for its opponent. There. 

With a roar, Nidoking stomped towards Poliwrath, just in time to see the surging sand pit burst and erupt, rendered inert as Poliwrath's attack cancelled out the movement of the vortex. And then it started moving back the other way. Nidoking and Nidoqueen may be classical opposites, but it seemed like the true yin and yang were Nidoking and Poliwrath, as one of them apparently only moved sand clockwise, and the other anti-clockwise.

Nidoking pulled his most furious, intimidating LEER, goading Poliwrath into a close-quarters brawl. "Hahaha," Zac laughed, seeing the look on Byron's face. "It looks like he's daring you to try that again!"

Big Habanero leapt over Chimchar's first volley. They vaulted the fireworks like an Olympic runner vaults a flaming, high-velocity hurdles. They didn't know, birds don't watch sports. "Woo!" Zac called, cheering on his team and waving sparklers from far enough away that he still felt safe. 



And there would be no chance for a second volley. Not if Zappa had anything to say about it. "Now!" Zac called, and the lizard popped out of his hiding place in the sand. He opened his frill, projecting a gleaming LIGHT SCREEN right in front of Chimchar, reflecting the blinding glare of the fireworks and its own flames right back at it. At the same time, the lizard spat a lit row of whirling crackers. Dance monkey dance!

Bootes pulled in his tentacles and quickly rolled out of the way of the seeds. He dipped in and out of the craters that Terry's attack had left, building up momentum. "You had many battles today?" Zac asked, conversationally. "I've got some sodas if you're feeling thirsty."

Omastar was moving fast now, and he sped across the beach, zipping around behind his opponent and trying and strike somewhere that wasn't a giant, beaked, face that could shoot explosive seeds.

Zac's Walrein rolled slowly towards Blissey, gaining speed gradually. Tapu Bulu ignored the battle and grew some palm trees to sleep under. "Did you ever find your pants?"

Bulu stood up. Its lower body jangled and chimed. It opened its mouth wide and let out a long, tooth-rattling yawn. Fini gestured upwards, as if the motion would inspire Bulu to greatness. 

It didn't.

Fini may embody balance, but it was Zac and Tapu Bulu's connection that was the clashing of extremes. Whereas Zac couldn't be stopped, or slowed. Bulu did the barest minimum. Zac was driven, determined to make the world a better and brighter place. Bulu wanted to sleep. Hell, the legendary was so lazy that it photosynthesized. 

The avatarship was a constant clash, between unstoppable spirit and immovable ass. 

Bulu gazed at its sibling with sleepy eyes that seemed to ask 'Are you done? Can I go now?'. This seemed like a conversation that had happened before. By now Bulu's sister doubtlessly knew that it would take far more than a prickle and a dramatic gesture to rouse the bull to action.

"A lot of what you told me just didn't match my experience," Zac said, his eyes moving between Bulu and its older sister. The lazy legendary slowly opened one eye as the NATURE'S MADNESS prickled its charred hide. "But there was one thing you said that I keep coming back to."

"You said that your connection with Fini was like an 'empathetic telepathy'. I've realized that what I have with Bulu is pretty similar." Zac took a longer swig from the can, his eyes bright and wide awake with the help of the caffeine. "The reality of the situation is that Bulu only has one emotion to share. Exhaustion. Thankfully, the exchange runs two ways, so all this cola not only keeps me awake, but stops Bulu from napping for another year or two."

Bulu pulled itself up from its bed on the overgrown dune. It wore the same, tired expression that Zac had seen every day since their meeting at the festival, but there was something else in its face this time. Something deep and familiar. 

Bulu rolled its eyes.

"HA!" Zac let out a barking laugh, his grin growing as Bulu answered the wakeup call in turn. Twisted, deep-jungle thorns sprouted underneath Fini, wriggling and scratching like a sibling tickle, or a ruffle of the hair. "First time I've seen that though."

Buzz flew away again. She paused for half an instant, and then darted back towards the group. Zac found it damn near impossible to follow her movements. "Wish I could say the same for Buzz, though she no slouch!" he said with a grin and a laugh. 

She stopped, just over the waves. She shot towards Zac, before cutting an unexpected left and zipping past Magnezone, sending an Air Slash at the floating opponent. BZZZZZZZ!

"Hey Patrick! How's it going?" Zac asked, waving to Gavin on the other side of the volleyball court. Zac had seen the news, and read the AQUA reports. He knew that the man across from him was Rocket, and was really called Gavin Merlino. Patrick was just a fake name. But still, there was no reason to be rude. 

The two of them were still friends, despite what the news liked to say about Rocket. They had met under favorable circumstances, they had many of the same friends, and they even shared some damn good chicken! As far as Zac was concerned, they were family. Patrick, Gavin, whoever. And a true friend would never use the secret name of his wanted criminal buddy in public. "Keen to a bit of volleyball?"

Zac kept his eyes peeled for Grapploct. "Maybe it's still in the ship. Sneg! Keep an eye out for escapees!" Sneg waggled his head agreeably. With his multiple heads he was an excellent watchman. 

Lapras' attack pelted against Cursola, but the solemn coral just rocked back and forth, taking the hits. It had done its job, and wouldn't give Melody the satisfaction of a good fight. 

Sneg made a sound of warning, and Zac saw a flash of purple and yellow swimming through the water towards Lapras. "There! It's coming straight for ya!" he yelled, pointing out the approaching threat. 

Grapploct, apparently healed of its paralysis, launched a pummeling assault at Lapras, engaging it in Close Combat with all eight of its fists!




Perish Count dropped to 2

Cursola was hit by Sparkling Aria
Grapploct used Close Combat!

The fog billowed through the field, picked up by the sea breeze and inhaled by Zac's team before they had a chance to think. Poliwrath's eyes turned to confused spirals, as if they were little mirrors of his stomach. On the sidelines, Kommo-o shuffled and staggered, plates clanging as he grabbed a nearby spectator for support. Even Zac felt like he was drifting on an ocean with uncertain gravity. The whole arena felt like an MC Escher painting. For a moment he wondered if he could walk up the net and into the sky. 

Blaziken though, had her eyes on the prize. She kicked off, leaving Zac coughing in a cloud of embers as Wanda leapt high into the sky to deliver a brutal, flaming, 180 Blaze Kick right to the ball, sending it rocketing right into Zac's face. 



He dropped like a sack of Pokebeans, and Togedemaru unrolled from its ball. Nearby, Wanda landed and let out a crow of victory, not realizing that she had attacked the wrong team. Clearly the smoke had gotten to her too.

"Captain Dross! One Point!" Called the announcer. "Serve when ready!" Togedemaru trotted over to Skyler's side, waiting for her to serve. 

Kommo-o went to take Zac's place, but the redhead only needed a hand to get back up. Zac wiped away the blood and sand, steadying himself in a wide stance. Half his face was deep red, already starting to purple. "You heard the man," Zac said, his voice muffled from his swollen cheek and lips. "serve when ready." 

Everyone got confused
Blaziken scored an own goal in Zac's face
Captain Dross: 1 Point!

There was only one possible move that could save them now. It was a one-in-a-million shot. No. A one-in-a-hundred. 

"Quick! Natsuki! Mimic!"

Feraligatr righted herself as best as she could towards the oncoming Blastoise. Still half-blind, her crest and skull hardened as she Mimicked her opponent's Skull Bash! With a terrifying, furious roar, she launched herself head first, towards victory or defeat.

"I've been looking for a little bit of help," Zac said, as he sipped another can of Charja-Cola. "Specifically, some help with that." He pointed over to where Tapu Bulu was sleeping under the shade of his own, self-grown palm trees. "I've got them up and about a few times during the battles today, but for barely a minute each time."

"I'm hoping that against a formidable, familiar opponent they'll be more willing to fight." He grinned at Fernando. "What do you say, mate? Think you can give us a challenge?"

"Standard League rules alright with you?" Zac asked. "3v3, singles, fight to the death. That sound good?" He paused for a second before breaking into laughter. "Nah I'm just kidding with ya mate. But bonus points if you can wake Bulu up!"

Zac pointed over to where the legendary was sleeping under the shade of some palm trees. "For now, let's just warm up!" He tossed out his first Pokemon: Bootes the Omastar!

The round shell thumped onto the sand, before thick, pudgy tentacles pushed their way out, propping him up. "Ready when you are!"

Zac shed a single tear as Barker was absolutely obliterated by Sam's child soldier. But in a way, it was what the 4th of July was truly about. 

"There's another star in the sky tonight," Zac said solemnly. He looked up at the sky, temporarily blind from the simply ludicrous amount of fireworks that just vaporized his Pokemon. It was also very likely that Barker was paralyzed right before he died.

Meanwhile, Big Habanero struck forward at the Vulpix. His heads worked in tandem, shooting back and forth like the beaked fists of a professional boxer. Left, right, left, right, red, blue, yellow, silver, again and again sending jabs of fire at the enemy. HOOOOOOOONK!!
