After their release from the penitentiary, the world became a blur. For jayden cross — someone with immense mental fortitude, or at the ver least, someone as well-versed in hardship given his time in Rocket — such nightmarish torture held little sway. It was easy to box it away into the recesses of his mind, where other trauma was held.

[break][break] HATRED had carved deep wounds onto his body, reshaping the painful patchwork that ROCKET had once forged. It controlled Jayden now, as he and CHIEN PAO plunged into the darkness, moving through the pitch-black abyss with chilling ease.

[break][break] His eyes first fall to the beast in the center of the arena, it's WISHING STAR gleaming like a burning star. Then it falls upon the familiar frame of a woman who had once warned him against such a fate. Warned him against letting his beast take control of him like it did.

[break][break] and just like that, a flash flood of emotions rages through him. he thinks about the way that they once stood in frozen tundra, in front of a broken city, as sludge threatened to creep closer and closer to their borders. he thinks about the way they used to fly in the sky, a mixture of fire and brimstone and ash. he thinks about the way that everything important had once chipped away into nothing but survival — an aching, desperate need to return.
