Killian tensed, shoulders rolling as he flicked the ash from his cigarette. He'd done enough beating around the bush, he supposed.

"There's an asteroid on its way to Hoenn. Should be here in ten years if you looked into yourself, but according to whatever we reached, it'll be arrive in a year."

The possibility it's lying is there, but given the events of the Soiree, Killian doubted it. "Officially, it's going to pass right by us. I'm sure that's a lie, though." he dropped his cigarette to the ground and crushed it beneath his shoes.

"I doubt whatever we contacted would have been so panicked if that were the case."

Killian frowned. He's not sure if that's a good thing or not. Maybe she wanted him to be the one to deliver the bad news. That sounded like Lulu Flint or at least the version of her he'd built in his head.

"If only." he sighed, "No, this has to do with something personal she's been helping me with."

He took another drag from his cigarette and let the smoke drift slowly from his lips.

"We made contact with something in outer space." excitement and dread dance together in his tone. Excited to be so close to the thing he's been searching for. Dread for what he's learned by trying to find it.

"Assuming nothing happens to derail the construction, it should be finished next month."

The admin's lips flattened to a line. Gavin's answer doesn't fool him, and he makes that clear with a look. Fine is the universal signal for not okay but don't ask me about it. Killian would know. He's been telling it to Alexandra Briarwood for months.

"Stressed." he replied dryly.

"I'll sleep once I figure this out. I'm close." it's a good thing he's got his back to her. Otherwise, she'd be able to see the lie written on his face.

With another yawn, he moved to the coffee pot and poured the liquid gold into his cup.

"Promise, Dove."

Killian stared at his computer with red and blurry eyes. Various applications related to the measurement of sound showed on the screen. Another all-nighter, and he's no closer to figuring out what sent him and Lulu that cry. Spectrograms, Sonograms - nothing he could think of proved useful.

"Fuck." he yawned, arms stretching above his head as he leaned back, chair squeaking against his weight. The sunlight shining from the windows of his office said it was time to take a break.

He stood and headed to the kitchen. From the hallway outside, he heard Lex vent her frustration. The hiss in her voice made him consider turning back around. He almost did, worried he'd say something stupid because of how tired he was but decided against it.

"What's ridiculous?" he asked, stepping into the room and making his way to the cabinet with the coffee mugs.

Details regarding the project were the first thing Killian learned upon being promoted to admin. They'd happened at the same time. The memory of that day burned hot like a sword fresh from the forge.

Without hesitation, he'd let it slip from his tongue and agreed to be a test subject for Chu-e Choi 's experiment. Killian meant it at the time. Now? He's not so sure. Power of his own feels so close that being a vessel for borrowed strength no longer has the appeal it once did. But his Achilles' Heel of curiosity has him here regardless.

Hands in his pocket, Killian stood not with the other bigwigs but amongst the people. That was until he spotted giona ferrara amongst those gathered. With a smile on his face, he made his way over, stepping to the man's left.

"I didn't peg you for the lab rat type, Giona."
