Locke arrived at the lab in high spirits. He’d only ever seen the facilities from the outside, so getting to explore the place a little was pretty much the highlight of his week. That, and getting to hang out with Conrad some more.

They got along surprisingly well with the other boy, and it was a nice change of pace from the older crowd Locke usually ran around with these days. It almost made them feel like their own age again; young and dumb without a care in the world.

They rang the doorbell, careful to keep the box of donuts they’d brought high above their head and well out of De-De’s reach while they waited.

After a bit of struggling, the snowboy was all pieced together. Now all that was left was to decorate it.

The Delibird had come prepared for this, too, as they all rummaged around inside their tails for various rocks, coins, and buttons to press into its white surface. One of them even managed to pull a gray, raggedy Reaper Cloth to wrap around the neck. Locke used his finger to carve out a smile beneath mismatched button eyes and stepped back to admire the finished product.

Just in time for MATIAS SILPH to call someone else over. They gave a small wave behind the other man, quietly encouraging Nia Acadia to join them as well.

Locke finally crested the last stretch of the climb behind Go-Go, huffing and puffing, just in time to see the Skiddo charging towards a nest of Exeggcute with a playful Tackle. They reached the goat Pokémon seconds before disaster, wrapping their arms around him and dragging him to a stop while the fragile eggs scattered.

After holding the squirming Skiddo down for a few more seconds for good measure, they both collapsed on one another, exhausted. ”Why don’t we take a break…” Locke wheezed, and Go-Go responded with a reluctant bleat.

Locke recognized that cute charm immediately. “Oh! Paxton, right?” He extended his hand out to the other man while Ji-Ji gave his Magnezone a bright smile.

They were joined by a third party member soon enough, and the stark contrast between the towering woman and her steed was enough to make Locke pause before greeting the newcomer. “Er, hello! I’m Locke. Are you…here to catch Pokémon too?” They asked as they reached out to Nora for a tentative handshake as well.

It took some time watching the other contestants for Locke to understand how to actually pack and roll the snow together to get the right shape, but eventually they managed to make three lumpy spheres that weren’t just loose piles of dirt and ice. Putting it together seemed like a whole other feat on its own, but luckily the flock was already working to together to stack the spheres onto one another.

Which left him free to consider MATIAS SILPH’ request. ”Most of the time I just base it off the species’ name, or the kind of sound it makes…But that’s kinda hard for Jynx…” Locke watched the other man catch a few snowflakes and copied the motion curiously while he thought. ”Blondie-Blondie, Granny-Granny, Yuki-Yuki, Yama-Yama, Val-Val, and Kyrie-Kyrie?”

"Suppose it can't be that different from sand," Locke mused as they haphazardly piled some snow together.

”Snowmen freaked me out when I was a kid honestly,” they said as they worked. ”I think the first time I ever saw one was in that movie with the guy who plays Batman. Where he dies and turns into one?” The cgi had been just uncanny enough to utterly terrify to young children everywhere.

That one soup commercial was a close second on the traumatizing snowman media ranking.

”Of course!” Locke gave a sharp whistle, catching the flocks attention and drawing them back to line up in front of MATIAS SILPH. ”De-De’s the boss, then there’s Li-Li, Birdie-Birdie, Pen-Pen, Quin-Quin, and Cado-Cado.”

An indignant chirp came from his chest as his Piplup peeked out of his coat enough to give him a pouting look. ”Oh, and Pip-Pip.”

"Sina-Sina..." He tested Eva Morales' suggestion. "I'll have to keep that one in mind!"

Now, Locke added inwardly. He wasn’t alone here now. He had been alone in Hoenn since he was fifteen, after all, and it was really only recently that things had started to change.

…Has he really spent nearly a quarter of his life here now?

Locke nodded mutely, grateful for the bites of pie that gave them time to mull over the other man’s words. Whatever Matias wanted them to reach out for, they weren’t sure they could grasp it just yet. The distance from one end of the table to the other seemed insurmountable just then.

But maybe meeting halfway would be enough for now.

Locke finished zipping Pip-Pip into his coat and breathed warm air into his hands. He didn’t know how his mother could put up with this sort of weather out in Snowbelle. He reluctantly pulled a hand away from his face to return Eva Morales’ wave, and smiled up at MATIAS SILPH behind rosy red cheeks as the other man approached.

”Not at all! I was just about to round the flock up to get started.” Locke gestured around the field, where the Delibird had apparently discovered the advantages of having real wings when making snow angels.

”I’ve never actually made a snowboy before,” they admitted as they scooped an experimental pile of snow together.
