So of course he was bored.

He wanted to look for someone to spar with, and had gotten his hands on a smartphone and was poking through one of those message boards he would frequent, looking for someone, hell, anyone he could practice with!

Maybe it was a good thing he kept his identity under wraps as much as possible—at least, in this region. Even if he had to go by another name to do so.

It would be bad if a known insurgent Rocket from Kanto was walking around in daylight. Kind of like what happened to a certain pair of idiots a few months ago.

Anyway—

There was a notice that had caught his eye. While it didn’t fulfill what he was looking for, instead there was the promise of money. Extra money.

He then opened another window and began to type a message and sent a reply:

‘I would be interested to help someone learn the intricacies of swordplay. Combining it with dance would be a sight to see.’

And sent—

Now all he had to do was to wait.

“Supposedly. However, I’m on my own again. It’s hard looking for someone to practice with these days,” he added as he adjusted his footing—thank goodness he didn’t wear something too out of place.

He nodded at the mention of his mentor’s name.

“One of several known game corners. Those little hole in the wall places with a limited number of pinball machines. Definitely not like the big one in the middle of Celadon,” he explained.

As for him, right now?

“I thought I was able to find someone with who I can practice my specialization with, but they’re gone. Don’t know why, maybe they were sent elsewhere over there,” he added—emphasizing that ‘over there’ meant Kanto as a whole.

Picking out the location quickly, he had to squint in the direction for a few moments, covering his eyes with his free hand a bit (due to the sun’s glare temporarily blinding him) before nodding in agreement to the plan.

To most, it would look like he was just shielding his eyes from the sun’s glare (which he really was) but at the same time he blinked a few times to recover his vision from being almost burned out of his eyeballs. Thanks, big orb in the sky.

He matches the other’s pace quickly and quietly, making sure to look as unassuming as possible in the process. Once they’re at a quieter location, he looked around just in case.

“Got a transfer. It got boring over there. He pulled the papers to get me over. Beats having to sit mindlessly all day at the Game Corner,” he added with a bit of a snort.

Maybe it was a good thing his identity wasn’t compromised—lurking mostly around the submarine was enough to give him cabin fever though.

It also beat being cooped up in the city of white rock any day.

“It’s been a while indeed, Gavin,” he greeted quietly.

Making sure not to stand out in such a ‘fortified’ position, he tilted his head a few times in agreement.

“Yes, it’s right here.”

A hand dug into the pocket of his clothes, and a marked Pokéball is flashed for a few moments.

“Where to, then?”

Maybe he moved too stealthily for his own good—

He was able to tail the other figure who’d gone into the supposedly ‘haunted’ location to investigate, and he swore softly.

“Didn’t you get my text to wait for me outside?” he began in the same quiet tone.

“Don’t just go rushing into unknown places without a partner or at the very least, a companion,” he added with a sigh.

And for the record, was his companion tottering around without any depth perception?

It sure beat staying around the city made of white rock with nothing to do.

To travel around this strange place—he’d mostly been staying on the sub the entire time he’d been here.

He was off to meet someone, to check out a so-called ‘haunted’ location on the mainland. He wondered if the other one was going to wait for his arrival, maybe they would. Maybe they wouldn’t.

Either way…

With the wrapped ‘package’ slung on his back, and his team secured—it was time to head out.

When he eventually arrived at the destination, though—

The other person he’d texted explicitly to wait for him had gone on ahead!

“Why,” was all he had time for, before following in the path of the open door.

Honestly, he was just there in the background, doing whatever the hell else shit was asked of from him.

He didn’t know what had happened with his mentor—and boss until recently.

The only thing he could offer was a thinly-drawn line on his face in response.

Well, at least they were here now.

Sootopolis was nothing like Celadon, if he was going to be honest. Little greenery, mostly white rock, and—

And then someone mentioned that they had ordered food.

Slipping out of the shadows, he looked over at the Underboss and gestured.

“I can pick that up for you. How many boxes did you order?”
