"Everyone in Rocket is a tool." Bill said, his voice thick with good-natured humor. "What makes you special?"

He had decided that he liked Beckett, despite the clear clash of the man's blunt minimalness with his own intentional vagueness.

Bill didn't need a costume, makeup, or a script. All he needed was an audience. He'd spent the last decade sharpening his smile and angling his words, and it was time to broaden his audience.

A woman ran past, wheeling an animatronic monster on a low trolley. Bill watched her go. "What's the message we're aiming for here?" he asked the underboss. "What do we say to contrast the current council members? What does Hoenn need?"

Bill walked through the wet markets with the right mix of flat-shouldered confidence and reckless pace to force the thugs, muggers, and other politicians out of his way. Above him the canvas roof sagged with pooled summer rain, and with each step on the soaked concrete his shoes flicked up tiny sprays.

He slipped down an alleyway between a cash-only jetski rental and a store selling secondhand dental fixtures. At the end of the alley was a brushed metal door, with an ID number burned into the upper half.

The numbers were unimportant on their own, but Bill's Rocket handbook told him that he was in the right place: The Pokemon Black Market.

Bill laughed. His everyday face had been so patient, placid, and personable for so long that he had almost forgotten. Somehow forgotten how good it felt to twist people like this.

He had watched the growing frustration in the Beckett's face as they talked. I shouldn't be antagonizing him, Bill chided himself. "Declan trusts me because I bring in an absolute church-load of cash. My Sinnoh work funded roughly 34% of Hoenn the last fiscal year. Before that it was split between here and Kanto. Before I became the money man for Declan I did the same for Claus. And before I did money I did political dismantling." He said the last word all teeth and gristle, like it meant something else.

"Whatever you want! Confess to me the same, if you want. What does Walsh see in you?"

"... Bill?"

He saw her an instant before she said his name. it left her lips like a bullet, sinking into the meat right above his heart. Just missing, as it did before.

"Yes Wolfe?" He answered, as if no time, distance, or lives had passed between then. As if a decade and change of cruelty hadn't carved off what could have been.

For a moment Bill flashed back to the night they'd met, and all he could see was her ruined face full of blood, retribution, and those lips, so thick and inviting. And then he was back in a thin strip of park, with a splashing fountain and the sun at his back.

He sat on the bench, sunglasses now down and this sliver of the past across from him. In the great mosaic of his past, there would always be a few panes that were a delicate, deadly purple. "It's been a while. How have you been?"

"The same thing he did when I joined, Beckett. A gift," Bill let the words soften in the vacuum of their duologue. The hard sounds broke against the floor and cypress pews, the soft sounds disappeared into the vaults of the ceiling. And the unvoiced sounds? They were just for him.

"This started as a confession, but it's feeling more like an interview," Bill said, a smile spreading along his lips like Dijon on a fresh corpse. "Rocket sure has kept up the interrogation training."

"Declan," Bill said simply. "Though I have been wanting to return for a few years now." He shrugged, an extraordinarily well practiced gesture. There was no hint of tension in his shoulders, only a languid, casual confidence.

"I spent the last thirteen years in Sinnoh; where I was needed. And now I'm needed in Hoenn. We both know personal preference doesn't factor into it, but I like to think that the Lord pulled a few strings."

"I have it on good authority that a certain councilman won't be returning to work."

"...and as always, the Lord provides." Bill finished, his grin growing wide, bordering on predatory before he cinched it tight. Once again his expression was buttoned and starched, the perfect smile for a prospective councilman.

Bill's gaze met Gavin's through the dark haze, and he felt something pulse in his chest. Not a heartbeat, but a telltale throb of excitement as he felt a piece of his world slide into place. Bill imagined his life as a vast, stained glass window. Each piece was unique in shape and orientation, and the colors and sizes varied wildly, but they all fit together to form him as a person.

That last piece was silver. He thought, forming the sliver of glass in his mind and slotting it into the great, mental construction. It slid in next to a dozen other pieces that comprised his life in Sinnoh. A mosaic of clear blues, astral whites, and violent greys. This next piece? I think it will be gold.

Bill wasn't in Lilycove for work. No, his work was back in Sootopolis, or out on the seas, and soon in Ever Grande. Today he was just passing through, on a trip of moral obligation.

He stopped by a coffee shop out of ancient force of habit. Jumpluff Java. To Bill's immense pleasure it looked better than he'd left it all those years ago. The paint was thicker and more vibrant, the staff were younger and bouncier, and the windows were highly polished, half open, and looked out over the bay.

But now Bill found himself in a mundane predicament. A man who hasn't had caffeine in a decade standing at the counter of a coffee shop. "Mint smoothie," he said, eyes devouring the young man serving him.

A minute later he was at a table by the wall, admiring the view.

Bill took the cigarette like he would a business card. He looked at it for a moment, before tossing it to Abigail. Her too-bright tongue flicked out, catching the cigarette and recoiling into her mouth. Abigail chewed twice, her jaws shredding the tobacco and paper like a Krookodile splintering a Blitzle's leg bone. She swallowed and exhaled smokelessly.

"Not for me anymore, Beckett. Thank you though."
