"If you know Merlino, then you're family," Bill said. At the sound of the safeword, Abigail the Salazzle slithered out from behind the pulpit. She eyed Theo's cigarette hungrily. Just like the old Abigail, Bill thought. Strange how things line up.

Abigail's scorching tongue flickered out and over the end of Theo's cigarette, lighting it with burning saliva. "Well go on," Bill said, as the caustic smoke twirled upwards like Rocket incense, "it can't be any more deadly."

"Start with what brought you here, and move backwards," Bill said, leaning back. It was an old trick, but a solid one. People were often adept at building lies chronologically, but making up a convincing story starting at the conclusion? Impossible.

Bill nodded. He had listened to ten thousand pleas for forgiveness when he worked in Eterna. I wonder if this well dressed city boy has something exciting to confess. Another thrilling case of white collar fraud perhaps?

"I can offer the same as any Church of Arceus," Bill promised. "Judgement."

"Thank you, though it could do with a bit of a facelift. Always room for improvement, isn't there?" It was an understatement. The only thing worth keeping was the stained glass, and even then it was starting to warp at the base. Bill turned to better face the welcome newcomer.

"Is that why you're here?" Bill asked. He peered into Theo's tired eyes, searching for the lever. "Self-improvement? Or perhaps you're looking for answers."

It's a slow day in the church. A weekday, to be exact. In the city of Sootopolis people were going about their business as usual. Living their pre-wrote lives, working their nine to fives. Bill schedule was looser, and his path far from predetermined.

His return to Hoenn had been a transfer. He kept the title, the contacts, and was set up in place of the former Sootopolis minister. The old man had conveniently been in dire need of a replacement.

The church was empty aside from Bill, and he leaned back in an age-worn pew. The air smelled of salt and dry hymn sheets. It's like I never left, Bill thought. Like the whole place has been preserved, waiting for me. The thought was uncomfortable. Not worrying, but worth revisitng later. Stagnancy was unacceptable.

Someone entered the church, letting out a simple breath that was music to Bill's ears. It was the sound of a man with plenty on his mind, and the world on his shoulders. Bill turned to Theo, giving him a fatherly smile. "Welcome home, my son. You look tired! Come, pull up a pew."

Bill didn't mind flying, but it had been ages since he had been out on the water. Living in Sinnoh had been all mountains and snow, and as beautiful as Eterna City was, there was no port. There was always Canalave City, but a trip along a canal lacked the scope and impact of a day on the ocean.

Sootopolis ran a number of cruise yachts through the nearby water routes, ferrying people between the white city, Mossdeep, Lilycove and Ever Grande. It was a popular day trip, and one that he had taken hundreds of times back when he was a resident.

Bill checked his watch. If the pirates are on schedule, we have about twenty minutes. I should get to the top deck, he though. It was a planned attack, and would make him look good at the upcoming council election. The only thing more electable that a rich, Sootopolis local was a local hero.

He looked around at the tourists on the boat, with their thick lines of sunscreen and wide hats. Families were laughing and smiling, and taking pictures of the Mantine jumping alongside the boat. There was Rocket backup on the boat, too, though he didn't know who yet.

"Here, let me," Bill offered, taking the camera from a nearby father and capturing this perfect moment in a family photo. He snapped some well framed shots, capturing islands, ocean and a leaping Mantine in the background.

"I'VE GOTTEN MUCH TALLER AND I CAN RUN THE FLORAL SHOP ALL BY MYSELF NOW!"

"Much taller is an understatement!" Bill said, smiling proudly. In a world of sudden cruelty and dull brutality, it took courage to cling to such simple victories. "And you can run the store now? That's wonderful!" Bill clicked his fingers, as if just remembering something. "You know, I just realized I need to buy a whole bunch of flowers. It's a good thing I have such a talented niece to turn to in my hour of need."

Bill was in need of some flowers. White, mostly, though some tasteful arrangements to go in his house would certainly bring back some of the cheer that was missing. Polyanthus, ivy, nettle, chrysanthemum. He set aside his floral plans. There was no rush. He'd waited more than a decade. He could wait another few days. The graves weren't going anywhere, and there were always fresh flowers.

"Are you here to watch Laurence Anderson compete?" Bill asked, eyeing the plush Articuno in her arms. He hadn't seen those at the stand. Maybe they were sold out? He'd have to check again. "I bet he's majestic."

"It's not so different from the natural order."

"Exactly right," Bill said, making on open handed gesture. His arms opened wide, as if he were accepting Gavin's statement on good and evil with both arms. "Good and Evil aren't objective points. They are human creations."

Gavin understood. At the man's mention of the natural order, Bill nodded. They had found common ground. He soothed his sermon, speaking more casually.

"Rocket is stronger." Bill agreed, honing in on Gavin's point and surrounding it with his words. "It always has been. We follow the natural order of predator and prey, and in doing so we let the world advance."

"The League is a stagnant institution. It protects and promotes mediocracy." Bill sighed, using one hand to adjust his already perfect hair. "They were stronger fifty years ago! There were Ranger outposts in every route. League Officers patrolling and protecting the cities instead of the police. Every kid wanted to grow up to be either a Ranger or an Officer." He gave a sad smile. "But they got complacent. They let power drain into other government works. They decentralized, and lost the strength they had."

"Now they're a shell, Gavin. Just a husk of what they used to be. Large and unwieldy, and lacking the punch or power to do anything. They're like a Wailord, beached and hanging on, refusing to die."

Sootopolis had changed. Some things for the better, or course. There were more shoe stores, more expensive restaurants selling foreign food, and more beach shacks selling summer polos and cheap drinks.

Sinnoh may be the home of Arceus, but it was no place to spend the summer. Somehow the idea of a beach party hadn't made it that far north yet.

Bill had travelled four continents in the years since his disappearance, and he could confidently say that there was still no place like Sootopolis for comfort and summer weather.

It was home, and he was finally back.

"Hi, Uncle Bill! Long time no see!"

Bill turned around, and looked down. There was a little girl and her Sylveon beaming up at him. For a moment, Bill was at a loss. Who was she? Why was she looking at him like that?

Uncle Bill?

It clicks, and Bill meets his niece's smile with one of his own. "If it isn't my little Lum Berry!" Bill said, wrapping her in one of the familiar, slightly-too-tight hugs that only an uncle can give.

Bill turned to Charlene, the woman from the merch counter who had blushingly agreed to be his date for the afternoon. "Charlene, this is my niece Lumia, can you believe it?"

"By the Lord, I haven't seen you since you were this high!" He said to Lumia, putting his hand down at knee height and laughing at his own joke. "You're all grown up! And your Eevee is too!"

"Destruction of what?"

"Time killed them," Bill stated. "Twenty five years is a decent lifespan for many Pokemon, let alone those that were born through unrefined science." Unlike Abigail, the graves of Bill's Aerodactyl were clearly marked. He hadn't visited them since he'd been back in Hoenn, but he would soon. There was business to be done on Mt Pyre.

"Yeah," Bill said, matching Gavin's smile as they shared an unspoken joke. "Such a shame." Bill's smile went wider as Gavin asked the perfect lead in question.

"Tell me this, Gavin. If a Poochyena runs down a Zigzagoon in the woods, is that good or evil?" He paused, giving Gavin a moment to weight the question in his mind.

"Neither! It's natural. It's Arceus pruning the weak, and making room for new growth. Now if a Ranger steps in and steals the dinner from the mouth of that Poochyena, is that natural? No! It's mankind meddling where they don't belong. It's a weakening of the natural order to fit some high-minded values that humans are trying to impose on Pokemon." In Bill's mind everything was so clear. The logic so flawless. The clarity was what allowed him to speak with such conviction. "Pokemon live, and hunt, and mate, and grow stronger for it. The weak die out, and they're replaced by new creations, and everyone is better off for it."

"So it's simple. We destroy the League."

"Yet in modern days they thrive under the right conditions."

"Don't get me wrong Gavin, I've got a healthy respect for these beautiful creatures," Bill said, smiling at the fossil machine. The science had come a long way in the last few decades. "I had an Aerodactyl of my own, long ago," he said, as if admitting a shameful secret. Bill's Aerodactyl had been a first generation resurrection, from when the process was far from perfect. He had acquired eight of them before finding one without cloning defects.

"They're survivors, you're right! And what's more admirable than that? You strike me as a survivor too," Bill said. He was relaxed now, familiar with the space, and had begun to pace slowly around the workshop.

"The problem isn't bringing back things long dead. Why, sometimes that sort of thing can help! Imagine all the murders we could solve if we could reanimate corpses! Why, if the dead could talk again I'm sure the world would be a much different place." Bill laughed, safe in the knowledge that even if the technology existed, nobody would be reanimating Abigail's bones any time soon.

"But the power of creation isn't for us. Only one holds that power by right, Gavin. Arceus." Bill stopped pacing, his gaze coming to rest on Gavin. "The rest of us are here for another purpose: Destruction."
