she laughs a little at her own joke. however, the commissioner wonders if bailey knows much of the mythology surrounding the crimson creature. tucking a blonde disc of hair behind her ear, she adds:

"it might do you good to read up on groudon." she says. "or maybe we can deliver a report to you instead. but for now? rest! speeches can wait until tomorrow." she quickly asserts, "you will be making one tomorrow. just a head's up."

seldom does dahlia have time in the midday for herself. there are periods where she wonders if she should have been a coordinator or a battler instead. perhaps, it would have been simpler then. less names to keep track of. less numbers to categorize as passwords or phone numbers.

still, she savors the breathing of a brief break. on the ground, the commissioner sees a spare pokeball on the park's court. leaving her seat from a nearby park bench, she strides over toward it.

her stoutland rushes forth, clutching the ball in its mouth. it's empty, dahlia can tell. the button releases nothing.

seeing a girl nearby, dahlia is quick to ask as she approaches: "did you drop this?"

as she opens the door to vacant conference room, dahlia allows him to move in first should he desire. the door and room is glass with the option of scrolling blinds for privacy.

with her elbow pressed against the door she whispers, "it might be a good idea to be a little, let's see... gentle when in these places. a good impression goes a long way."

dahlia witnesses the shouting match as she steps out of a conference room. a binder barely fits in her white-sleeved arms. post-it flags jut out from the stacks within, angled outward like plants in frantic growth.

she moves close to andy, extending the rigid arm holding her binder like a bulwark.

"andy, right?" she knew that a boy by his name had a scheduled appointment here. "let's get out of here." a scolding glance is shot at those who fail to control their tongues.

"i know you just came out of a meeting but," dahlia lifts her finger as she attempts to shuttle him away into a nearby hallway, "think of this as a treat. are you in?"

the added descriptors widen dahlia's eyes further. quick to answer for her, the commissioner blurts: "groudon."

hard labor can be defined by the damage of one's temple. while hoenn may harbor wounds upon its land, there is no time to heal. no time for scarring. the hard work is hard to notice when there is little respite.

and as the continent faces destruction once more, dahlia finds herself speaking to a representative force capable of reconstruction— or sheer catastrophe.

"you're right. let's keep this a secret between just the two of us." dahlia says. "after the war, there is no use hiding it, don't you think?" she wonders how numbing the lines that stretch across her flesh truly are.

"you have an incredible force as your ally," dahlia says, "and the people of hoenn will love to know that their champion has a pokemon like groudon by her side."

the unveiled markings run off the champion's skin and steal her breath. she pauses, curiosity twinkling in her eyes. a step forward brings her close. eyes scrutinize with wonder— and possibility.

"which one?" dahlia glances at her. "does it hurt?" she asks quickly, referring to the odd tattoos bailey hides.

"there's no need to hide this. it should be celebrated, instead. don't you think the same?"

with a smile made to reassure, she echoes bailey's crude conversation. "as for your concerns... well, we can work on that. we have speech writers, personal stylists. and i understand that flies in the face of what i just said, but your character does not need to be sacrificed for those."

the commissioner is reminded of herself. bailey's worries resonate across time. she recalls her ascension to her political seat. the chair is too tall. too wide. her feet do not touch the ground.

"bailey, the people know you've defended hoenn countless times before. you've already won their favor."

to present a life-altering decision in a matter of minutes, perhaps was not the wisest thing. however, time is against them. not only do their enemies roil at the edges of their region, the public is restless and desperate for idols.

and although the champion's seat is not free from the political snare—in fact, the throne is clutched by its jaws—the stardom can inspire some semblance of hope.

"frankly, i've been told it was a possibility since i was young." dahlia says. "i never thought it would actually... happen, but here i am. with you." she sighs, shoulders slumping as if stripping away weighted scarves.

"you still have a chance to decline, bailey. cold feet is fine when the public does not know yet."

dahlia shakes off the jitters with her fingers. the meeting's residual electricity (perhaps, this is literal) clicking off nails like nerves seeking frantic release.

"you didn't pass out," dahlia says, voice a ghostly hush, "so you certainly did hold your color. showed it too."

without the restriction of an arm sling, the commissioner is fully present for the champion's gestures. her physicality carries the curtness of her conversation. charges the cussing with an excitement seldom found within the eggshell white of governmental walls.

"you'll be a fine champion, bailey." dahlia hastens her next two steps to catch up to her, "if that's what you're worried about. is it?"
