dahlia's humming fades into the quietest tremolo underneath andy's harangue. there is no lack of focus, no fatigue of the day settling in underneath her eyes or on their lids. andy's articulate anger is enough to draw any adult's attention— and in a way, she found it entertaining.

"i'll see what i can do." dahlia says. "i'm not too certain about the excrement portion of your request, but i'll talk to him." she leans back in her chair, shoes pressed firmly on to the office's floor. "there is the possibility he's just expressing his concern. after all, this region is dangerous. he knows that firsthand."

fernando did a number on him, dahlia thinks. preemptively, she bids farewell to any chance of the silph heir having an heir of his own.

"and now you do too."

dahlia watches as their constellated group pushes onward; however, in her elegant dance across the sands, the invisible and imagined bonds between their spheres break.

while Adrian Malcolm moves on ahead with others, the commissioner notices through the obstruction of her fabrics, a delivery boy's disappearance. she gasps, granules of sand scattering across her clothes as she watches angelo vestri disappear.

"no!" her vespiquen's combee fruitlessly strike the sands. there is no limb left to grasp, no sign left for hope. "we just lost someone!"

she cries out— but the commissioner knows she can not remain still. faking her confidence, dahlia casts her dragonite out of her pokeball.

mounting the MARVEL SCALED dragon, she attempts to navigate the spike traps in the air as her vespiquen follows close. her pokemon attempt to PROTECT and DEFEND ORDER in order to forge brief shields angled toward the spikes should they protrude more than expected.

QUICKLY, dahlia recalls her mr. rime. despite the pokemon's nimble footwork, she calls upon her vespiquen instead. the sands hiss below and match the careful beat of the queen's leathery wings.

while Adrian Malcolm and Katherine Fairburne shed light for the hidden commissioner, the illuminated shape of treasure catches her eye. she whispers, "DEFEND ORDER, please."

and as underlings swarm out from her cell, the vespiquen is wreathed with a living shield. it goes ahead of her. ruby beacons scan the sands above golden mandibles. while the commissioner navigates the quicksand, she plucks the nearest treasure.

she does not dally— but only can the sands determine whether one is fast enough.

THE TEMPLE OPENING. wrapped completely in protective garb, the commissioner enters the temple as well. her blue eyes are obscured by thick goggles. a scarf hides much of her face. it is not that she is trying to hide her identity— although there is no penalty in doing so.

she is treading into unfamiliar territory in ways more than one. ahead of her, dahlia's mr. rime leads by one step. its cane taps against the cold floor as a beam from her flashlight captures ancient stone.

dahlia hears katherine's warning. her gut does too. but she does not answer. still, she realizes she is surrounded by powerful trainers. for the sake of discovery and experience, things should be fine.

the joke does not land. at least, to dahlia. she stands, stunned briefly, as if trying to construe some polite way of saying that it would be uncouth— but the chuckling and admission that pours afterward is enough to loosen her shoulders.

"i don't believe it'll take too long." dahlia says. "i don't want to keep you for long, that is. you must be busy."

she leads him into a wider office space by the end of the hall. it opens up into a large room that faces evergrande city. with wide glass walls on one end of the room. two leather seats flank a small coffee table; there, already, coffee and iced lemon water sit in metal and clear urns for self-service. glass cups wait beside them.

"take a seat." dahlia says, gesturing to one of the leathers. she takes her seat, smoothing her pencil skirt under herself as she descends.

a thin finger reaches over to dispense icy water into balder's clear cup.

dahlia's head tilts dutch. the joke lands crooked. but a crooked landing is still a landing, and although the horizon bailey crafts is not parallel to the earth of her jest, she still ticks it off as a success.

no matter. like a comedian, a champion must review their own material after all.

"fake it until you make it." dahlia says, tapering the tongue that strikes her palate inward.

dahlia is quiet. utterances, not interjections, come soft to communicate understanding— or some sense of listening, as she hums and nods her head like a watercolor paintbrush.

"lilycove has suffered, but the flooding subsided as soon as kyogre disappeared," dahlia says quickly, "just letting you know, in case you were worried about anyone there."

if andy leans back, dahlia slouches forward. her shoulders lose their stiffness. lines become gaussian as the fabrics of her clothes wrinkle.

"well andy, it seems like you got the short end of the stick. the short end of several sticks." dahlia inhales: a breath steady enough for both of them. "what do you want the most right now? how can we make this better for you?"

she hums.

"i don't think a cell would help you with what you're going through right now."

dahlia has a habit of hovering around nervously before meetings, appointments. little desk work can be done once the clock hits ten minutes prior. perhaps, it is a good thing, she assures herself. a good thing to allow her to transition from one bullet point to the next. to arrive with full breath and full attention.

then again, today's meeting is not scheduled. rather, it's quite impromptu. "at your earliest convenience," she had wrote.

still, she's quick to be notified when the man arrives.

hearing balder's voice, she bursts through some doors, their glass frames shaking as she greets balder with a brandished hand.

"no need for that. i'm here!" she's dressed in her usual attire. whites, black heels, a practiced smile. "just through here." the commissioner holds the door open for him, which leads into a corridor connected to several office rooms. "would you like anything?"

the stoutland gnaws on the device instead. settling down with a hearty thump, the wet sounds of slobber and tooth sliding against cold metal commence alongside doggy play.

"oh!" dahlia quickly exclaims. the name rings familiar. another name in a list of others printed deep in the documentation of the incident. "if you mean remember you personally, i'm afraid i was slightly," she pauses, lips creasing into an uneasy smile, "incapacitated then."

as the park rustles with taillow wings, she ruffles the fur on her stoutland's head. long ears flicker happily around her hand.

"it's a pleasure to 'meet' you as well. enjoying the day so far?" she asks. "have you been faring well since our 'first meeting'?"
