Having received a report of Luvdisc trapped in the area, he'd also found himself volunteered for the cause. To go check the situation out, to aid the pokemon where necessary and fend off any threats. As a ranger, ocean patrols have never been his cup of tea. After all, he is severely underprepared to deal with enemies should he encounter any on the open waters.[break][break]

Just his luck when he sees a flock of Wingulls circling up ahead, a vessel rising and falling with the rhythm of the tides as the waters churn beneath. And every so often, specks of pink seem to be tossed overboard. Poachers? Freelancers or affiliated?[break][break]

A spaceship, a search log for the 'ascended hall of origin'. A little bit of logic lets him surmise that this is an expedition into space, all to search for Arceus' secret sanctum. But does it truly exist in the vast expanse of a endless universe? Perhaps so, when the ship begins to rumble and wail -[break][break]

"Hold on." Glancing across the control panel, he searches for any kind of in-built weapon that can be used. While self-sacrifice may be noble and ensures that one of them gets out of this, uncertainty as to what happens next makes him refuse that notion. Even in the simulation against Giratina, he hadn't allowed a single person to be taken. He sure as hell isn't going to start letting that happen now.[break][break]

~~Perhaps, he simply fears what it means to be pulled further into a mass of tangled data.~~

"Help me overwrite this, Ogham." Hurried orders puts the Rotom to work, the system broken into as the ship struggles and strains against the hand's grasp. Electrical currents and strange space lasers work to defy their fate, an inevitable end yawning silently upon the horizon.

He remains blissfully ignorant to whatever Sansa Arouet thinks of him, far more invested in taking in the sights. In a place as wild and unpredictable as the Ultra Desert, gathering as much information he can is paramount to ensuring they don’t die at the hands of the supernatural.[break][break]

Where Sansa carries a mountain of equipment, he chooses to carry the bare essentials - Water, his pokeballs and a Rotom phone to take pictures where necessary. At some point, he does consider whether he should offer a hand, but something at the back of his mind insists that she might just snap at him if he tried.[break][break]

“Enough.” His answer is short, to the point. He really doesn’t want to talk more than needed in a desert like this. If not to shy away from that duty sensation on his tongue, then to remain quiet and unnoticed by whatever dwells under these sands.[break][break]

He stops just shy of the top, taking a moment to look around and grasp a lay of the land (which really won’t amount to much, he notes). Out in the far distance, the horizon seems to be swallowed by a cloud: A sandstorm crawling in their direction without any signs of dying down soon. His nose scrunches, an uncomfortable breath of dry air drawn in.[break][break]

Emotions? Are the creatures here sentient and truly displaying emotions? He's pretty sure that they're simply part of the code, but he'll give a nod along to whatever Madd tells them. And the strange markings that glow upon their fur... A connection to Xerneas? Or that illumina phenomenon he'd heard about?[break][break]

He blinks at the question, then once more as he confirms it being directed towards him. Though his facial expressions don't quite contort at the nickname, he'll begin to lead the way as requested.

Curiously, these Pokemon feature brilliant markings that glow and glimmer beautifully in the dappled sunlight. Whether they were originally Illumina Pokemon or not is uncertain, but they shine bright with gratitude.

Petrification and a large white tree only really brings up two creatures in his mind - Xerneas and Yveltal, who have both been in Rocket's custody once. What has become of the bringer of death is somewhat of a mystery, but if they had been doing anything like this in the real world, he probably would've known.[break][break]

The first word he graces her with are one muttered with an absent mind, his attention spread over the vast amounts of statues gathered around. Had they been praying to Xerneas for protection? That would mean the lifebringer had failed in their duties, or simply not bothered to lend aid when asked. Or should he be thinking about this scenario in a different light?

The floor crumbles and with it, the gruff facade that Madeline McKenna puts up. Where she hits the ground in pain, he tries his best to stick a landing, inhaling sharply as he tucks into a roll. Not the best for his knees he reckons, but enough that the pain won't be lingering for long through this simulation.[break][break]

Madeline's check-in is met with a brief nod, his eyes flicking over her presence to check for any limps as she picks herself up. When he detects none, he'll simply follow suit, fumbling a little onto his feet whilst taking note of the writings on the wall. Nothing has actively tried to hunt them as of yet, so he dismisses any dread that should rightfully be tied to such a sight.[break][break]

When he'd been told that Rocket scientists had figured out how to use the seal stone in some kind of machinery, he'd expected there to be information he had to look into. And he definitely would not pass up a chance to gather more when presented with the chance. The only real problem was that you couldn't go in without a partner, most probably for safety reasons and such.[break][break]

Pity for them, really. Madeline McKenna may talk quite a bit, but he will merely grace her with a placid stare before fidgeting with his sleeves. She's right, following the noises isn't the smartest of choices, especially not for the first go whilst he's yet to figure out the rules behind this simulation. And so he'll sigh, looking for an exit as he dulls the voices in his head.

Making it to their destination is a lot easier with more hands on the job, a low breath drawn as he tries to steady his racing heart. The gym is but a temporary sanctuary for them, and he's glad that they're all acutely aware of it to a certain extent. They aren't going to be able to fell Giratina, but that only leaves two options which neither of them seem rather hopeful.[break][break]

"It's got better things to do than mess with us all day."[break][break]

If the scenario was simply playing out as it had, it would only be a matter of time before Giratina would be called back to it's avatar side in hopes of achieving something else on the battlefield.[break][break]

"We can't outrun it, even if we sacrifice someone. Our best bet is fending it off until it has to leave. Attacking it while it's distracted would be ideal but..." He frowns, briefly looking over the group. Just seconds after, a Rotom zips back towards him, peeled from the lights in the stands as it begins to beep. They don't have much time before the dragon comes crawling under their doorstep.[break][break]

Asriel Pryde is injured but seems to have several heavy hitters on his team... River Marx is capable of manipulating the field conditions to a certain extent. And he himself? Well, he'll do his best to fill whatever role he's needed in.[break][break]

"We need to make sure it stays within our sights. Marx and I are still able to move, so we can juggle its attention away from you." He knows that Asriel has been through some rigorous training and should understand his limits, even if he doesn't quite follow them. "You'll need to hit it hard in the meantime, Pryde."

A difference in opinions will not sway him, and the way that River Marx simply follows instead of branching off to do his own thing tells him just about enough of this man's will. Perhaps, years of working undercover with rangers has clouded his judgement, making him value the lives of his teammates a little too much. Or perhaps, he'd always been this way, unwilling to leave others in the dust where it could be helped.[break][break]

The whole argument of having a target painted on their back really shouldn't even have come up - As soon as he catches sight of Asriel Pryde and his injuries, he scrunches his nose, looking around the building for alternative exits as he slips his way through the corridors. They understand the concept that they shouldn't be staying in here at least and with that, he raises a hand, making a quick sign as he goes for the back door.[break][break]

Behind them, his Rotom is hard at work, doing its best to absorb as much of the attacks and attention of the legendary with Substitutes. A floating digital clock ringing at full volume, a tv playing the latest Hoenn news, a lawnmower that begins to rev its engines - The ceaseless racket temporarily draws Giratina away from their escape route as a motorbike gets launched at its chest.[break][break]

With one injured, their chances of outrunning this beast grow slim. He has read the maps of this city, scouted every nook and cranny on his rare patrols here. They have to go somewhere, but where? If they try to hide in a normal civilian building, they'd get flushed out. The spire hadn't been accessible that day or perhaps, no one had been able to go in with the shifting of the land.[break][break]

"The gym?" He calls out. If it's built to withstand pokemon battles and has survived the Sootopolis riots, there's a chance they could use that to their advantage.

While River Marx is right that it's ultimately not a game revolving around Katherine Fairburne, it would do them well to remember that avatars derive a fragment of their power from the gods they follow. There's a good chance that Giratina could simply pop out from behind them, or that it might already have grabbed Asriel Pryde while they weren't looking.[break][break]

He'll choose to withhold his silence, a ping from his pockets briefly pulling his attention to the outside as he dares to sneak a peek. Giratina seems occupied with the Rocket forces attempting to siege the land, a Dragon's Breath pouring over the rooftops of abandoned buildings down the streets and driving many out of their hiding spots.[break][break]

Add on the raging war outside, it won't be long till some other League supporters might smell their tracks.[break][break]

"We should probably meet up with Pryde."[break][break]

There's no silence to flood the streets, but the glaring lack of chaos from some giant dragon is a rather bad sign. With a tailwind to give them that push, he dares that venture out of their hiding spot, following the flickering lights from his Rotom's travels down the streets until he can slip his way into the same building that Asriel occupies.

There are many ways he can interpret their team name, but he's not here to submit a literary analysis. He's here to focus on what needs to be done, like taking care of Giratina in this godforsaken simulation.[break][break]

The briefing doesn't do much for him, only reiterates the basics of what he's already surmised. The premise, the safety precautions, the objective; Nothing too out of the ordinary for a mission. When he also considers the phrasing used in the briefing - neutralise or escape, not defeat - and compares it to what he knows of the supposed deity, this overall doesn't seem too bad a challenge.[break][break]

As soon as the test starts, he's taking advantage of the chaos and ducking behind cover. Attacking it head-on right off the bat clearly isn't the best solution, especially when he lacks crucial information on how things might proceed.[break][break]
