The point of exhaustion comes eventually. Muscles ache, every step heavier than the last, and his lungs burn with every breath. He could slow down. He could stop and take a break. Of course he doesn’t do either.

Mars keeps on running, and when he almost crashes into a Yamask that suddenly makes itself visible, attempting to knock him back with its OMINOUS WIND, the banker reacts instinctively: TELEPORTING past it.

Teleporting hadn’t been an instinct before, but with almost a year having passed since he first obtained the ability, it feels as natural as breathing.

He does teleport too far, though: almost to the opposite end of Route 121.

He’s no stranger to experimentation in Space-Time Distortions, but as things stand, he has no reason to speak of his own attempts at opening rifts within them and the varied degree of success of such experiments. For now, he’s simply here to judge and observe.

”You can run all the tests you want. If you submit them to MAGMA you can cross-reference with our archives. Many have extensively studied these distortions before.” Much of his own research would not be found there, but that’s because of the nature of his experiments. There are things he’d rather not divulge to every single Team Rocket grunt. Still, he speaks truly: MAGMA has extensive data on these sorts of phenomena.

”I have many. This Braviary is one.” With that said, he steps forward, walking towards the centre of the distortion. A huge Ursaluna appears before him, but as if it were nothing, Tuesday TELEPORTS past it and continues walking. The Zorua always walks beside him, and overhead, the Braviary keeps other pokémon at bay.

When he had decided to come to Melody’s house, Mars sure as hell hadn’t expected to be greeted with the latest episode of a bizarre pokémon telenovela, but that’s exactly what happens when the door opens. He finds it comical, to be honest. That is, of course, until Cobalion shows up.

Golden eyes meet those of the Sword of Justice, not once looking away. Yet, despite the lack of fondness that exists between him and the distrusting goat, Cobalion seems to decide that he should come into the house. Another unexpected turn of events.

”Thanks, Cobalion.” He offers his gratitude when stepping into the house and closing the door behind him, his gaze then falling upon the Unown-W. Inevitably, he smiles at it, offering it a fond couple of pats. ”And thank you too.”

Mars remembers well the Unown Report entry that had appeared when scanning this very Unown, and at that moment, it rings in his head.

To him, nothing in this world is a coincidence, and thus he can’t help but wonder if this has anything to do with what’s clearly happening with Melody Miro. But, what is actually happening to her? Mars can only speculate, and with such speculations, he steps farther into the house.

The poor little Meowth doesn’t stand a chance, but the whole scene sure ends up being an interesting one. Silent, the CEO watches, never looking away from john nelson, his Zangoose, and their target. He does not intervene, even if he does pass judgement, and once the situation is dealt with and the mischievous yet undeniably adorable feline is captured, his thoughts on the whole affair are voiced in the simplest way possible:

”Not bad. Good work, John.” He claps the blond on the shoulder, then calling his Espeon back to the confines of her Luxury Ball with a simple flick of the wrist and a click. With the black sphere returned to his belt, his attention turns to the captured cat. ”Someone from the cattery should be here s—...”

As if on cue, the sound of someone running down the hallway can be heard, and sure enough, a young woman that looks to be in her early twenties soon steps into the room. Looking as if she had run all the way here.

”Mister Del Mar— I’m so sorry. Quid! What are you doing?!”

Ah yes, Quid. Notoriously, every Meowth owned by P.O.G Bank is named after slang terms for money. Ever so polite, the banker smiles, giving his employee a simple nod while watching her take away the cat.

”Well, looks like that’s resolved, then. We should have enough presents for everyone even with this little incident, but let me know if you run into any other issues.” Mars then tells John. He's calm as ever, as if nothing were capable of fazing him.

Once again, as it has happened many times before, Mars’ personal assessment of priam conrad proves to have hit the nail on the head. Impulses appear to truly guide Priam’s life, but as Mars had come to realise overtime, there is a certain degree of logic to the madness.

”You’ve got it all figured out, huh?” Assistant, suit, rift, adventure, MAGMA credits. Mars would correct him and let him know that they’re actually called merits but it just doesn’t seem worth the trouble. What matters is that Priam is excited about the work that has to be done, because if he’s excited, he’ll probably do a better job out there, especially if he leads another group.

”Just make sure to tell them of the dangers, yeah? I’m counting on you to keep everyone safe, bigshot.”
[break][break]
The words said just as Priam takes his leave sound teasing, but in them there is a rare truth: Mars thinks he can count on Priam, and that’s something he doesn’t think of most people. In Team Rocket, that’s only a select few.

”You and I should also get ready to go back.” He tells the Braviary with a whisper once Priam has left, a hand digging through the soft fur of the avian pokémon’s mane. In response, Boreas looks at him, spreading enormous wings and giving a warlike screech. Mars smirks at the sight.

He had clearly made the right choice when it comes to Sygna Suit partners.

Despite what Priam may think of him, Mars too would be quick to claim that pokémon are actually tools at their service. However, from his point of view, it’s the same with people: they have valued based on their skillset and how useful they are to him. So, much like Mars considers priam conrad to be valuable to Team Rocket but still actually likes chatting with him, he’s quite fond of his Braviary despite the fact that he definitely wouldn’t care for the Pokémon if it weren’t useful to him.

During his time training it and through everything they have gone through together, Mars has actually grown to trust Boreas and even rely on it, and that’s something he can only say about a handful among his hundreds and hundreds of pokémon. So, yeah, as he sees it, they really are besties.

Speaking of which…

”I’d say you and Sammy are pretty damn close already, though. It really had your back when we were at Sea Mauville.”
[break][break]
Mars remembers it well, and honestly, those are the kind of situations when he wishes he could have had Boreas with him. Gently, he caresses the Braviary’s beak, avoiding its pointed and sharp end. While the azure flames on its face flicker, the Braviary actually seems surprisingly calm now – a heavy contrast to its reaction when Priam had first arrived.

That calm isn’t disturbed even when Mars laughs at Priam’s next question.

”Sure, we can arrange something. I’ll tell my assistant to contact you. Sygna suits are pretty damn pricey, though… You may have to end up taking that promotion after all. The pay rise sure is nice.”

He means the Rocket Beast position declan walsh had offered Priam after the assault on Littleroot, which to the surprise of many, Priam was yet to accept. Mars isn’t all that surprised, honestly, but maybe that’s part of why he’s taking the chance to encourage him.

In the unexpectedly long time Mars has known Priam, he has known him to be impulsive, so the fact that the decision to get a Sygna suit that syncs with his Samurott was made after one simple comment doesn’t surprise the underboss in the slightest. If anything, it just tells him that Priam is smart enough to listen to good advice, because of course Mars always gives the best advice.

”He.” Of course he knows his Pokémon well enough to be certain of its gender… right? Admittedly, Boreas had come from a distortion, so it’s not like Mars had raised the bird-of-prey from the moment it hatched, but given that it had fathered more than a few pokémon back when the hatchery was at its peak, Mars is pretty damn sure Boreas is actually male.

The Braviary itself doesn’t seem to care much for their speculations about how fond it will be of Ultra Space, it just stares at Priam, and Mars himself does the same – listening to what he has to say.

Distortions and the rifts… Right… that makes sense...

”Huh… You have a point, I can see how Sygna suits would potentially help in Ultra Space if that’s the case. Good thinking, Priam.”

As per usual, Priam really proves himself to be Team Rocket’s most overqualified grunt.

At the mention of bonding, though, Mars laughs, and an eyebrow quirks given Priam’s implication that he may not have a strong enough bond with his pokémon. Raphael Pryde would probably enjoy this kind of discussion.

”Don’t you worry, Boreas and I are besties.” He may be joking, but the fact that the Braviary listens to his commands and allows him to ride on its back when necessary is proof enough. When Mars had caught it, the pokémon had been wild, feral, and clearly not at all fond of people. It had taken a while for him to tame and train it. He’s actually rather proud of that, honestly.

”It’s good to know that you understand that you have limits.” Joking as they may be, smirk as he may, Mars actually means it. priam conrad is a valued member of Team Rocket, and he’d rather not lose him because of pushing himself too far. Plus, he really likes the kid. ”You deserve a good rest. That way you can stay in tip-top shape.”

The undeniable truth is that they both will end up returning to the Ultra Deep Sea and not just because Team Rocket wants to explore the rifts and profit from them. Mars craves understanding the things many believe should not be understood, and Priam craves excitement and adventure. Their motivations are different, yet they still often end up being brought together because of them.

”Sygna suits? Really?” His gaze goes from Priam to the dark Braviary by his side. Mars had considered getting a Sygna Suit before, but at the time he had deemed it to have more disadvantages than advantages. If Priam is right, then maybe now is finally the time.
[break][break]
Boreas’ stare pierces through him, its head tilting almost as if to say ’What the fuck are you looking at?’ Yet, Mars stands firm, and his smirk does not fade.
[break][break]
”Sure, why not? Could be worth a shot. Not sure how much Boreas would like flying in the Ultra Deep Sea, though.” Maybe he will, maybe he won’t. A hand scratches through the feathers of the Braviary’s mane, and in response, its eyes close – seeming to enjoy the gesture.

”Bet you have your Sygna Suit already designed and everything, huh?” He asks Priam, now curious.

Once, long before these new rifts appeared in Hoenn, Cillian Quinn had warned him that Ultra Space is a fucked up place. Back then, Mars had thought he would still like to see it anyway, but it is now clear to him that they all had kind of underestimated how much preparations would be needed.

They had all managed to make it back to Team Rocket’s headquarters one piece this time, but after ensuring that BARNABY FINCH is alright and that Cillian Quinn will make a full recovery from the effects of Nihilego’s toxins, Mars makes his way to the submarine’s vast courtyard. There, a huge Braviary of dark plumage is released, their bird of prey immediately screeching and extending its wings. This is the only place in the entirety of the submarine that Boreas tolerates, but only barely.

This tolerance appears stretched thin when priam conrad approaches, chatty as always. The avian pokémon stares at him from behind a mask of azure flames, and Mars can’t help but find its annoyance as amusing as it gets.

”Yeah? Maybe I should send you back to the rift right now, then.” Mars tells Priam, obviously teasing. A hand pats the Braviary’s neck, getting it to relax even if its gaze remains fixed on Priam and Samurott alike. Mars also looks at them then. ”Nice Samurott. Are you thinking of taking it with you next time?”

Also a pokémon from the space-time distortions. Just like Boreas.

Unsurprisingly, Mars approves of Priam's choices.

Taking a deep breath, he looks at the front door of the house of the Elite Four member, and without allowing himself even another second to hesitate, he rings the doorbell. There are no Pokémon accompanying him this time; it’s just Mars with an umbrella.

The first pokémon that appears is, of course, not an Unown, because that would just be too easy, no?

Instead, Mars sees a Beheeyem floating not all that far ahead, and being unable to determine if the pokémon will ignore him or turn hostile, he decides to play it safe and change routes. Sure, he could call something out of a pokéball and have them deal with this potential problem, but honestly, he'd rather just keep running.

Why allow himself an interruption for this, right?

"There's more to victory than just overwhelming your enemy." He tells her calmly, petting the Dragapult one last time before calling it back to its pokéball's confines. It's then that he looks at her once again. "It won't be an easy battle, but there's much to be gained if we succeed."
