He could easily make speculations given the things he knows about her, and to a degree, it’s inevitable for those speculations to distractingly bloom in his mind. Does this have anything to do with the lasting effects of the toxins? With Melody’s mother? With everything else? Mars may not have taken part in any of it, yet he had read the reports, and that makes him complicit to a degree.

And yet, here he is, thinking of Melody as his friend.

Is that what it is? Knowing when to bow and allow someone else to have the spotlight? It only sounds like the Melody he knows to a degree, because while she’s not wrong, he’s also aware that she had really enjoyed last year’s performance. Still, he chooses not to push, walking alongside her towards their private box.

”In a way it’s kind of nice for you, no? To be an spectator for once, instead of the person everyone has expectations of. You can just sit and enjoy the show. I always find that kind of thing to be… refreshing.”

He’s honest about it, because while Mars himself may be no idol, he does find himself having to speak and even perform in front of crowds quite often. People like him and Melody Miro love to stand in the spotlight, but being able to just sit and watch can also be nice from time to time.

Mars is rarely one to dwell in hypotheticals about his past; in how things could have been different if he had done X or Y. It’s not a healthy practice for a man like him, and yet here and now, because of this short conversation with Hideo Kino, the banker finds himself wondering what he would have done in Hideo’s place if he had actually ran away at his age…

Not send his grandparents a Christmas card, for one. Yet, if he had even considered it, then the obvious answer would have been to–...

”If that’s the case then you could always mail the letter to them, no? Reduce the risk? Although, I guess you might want to take the chance to check in on them too… hmm…”

Is this the sort of advice he should give a child? Probably not, but then again, it’s also not Mars’ problem. He understands that a kid may have reasons to want to be as far as possible from their family, even if Hideo’s own actions and words speak of an affection that has not been lost.

At least Mars doesn’t have to dwell on it for long, because it’s then that his phone emits a ding! thanks to a text message from his assistant. The Flittle attempts to poorly imitate the sound.

”Ah, well… Looks like I have to go. I hope that that whole business with the letter goes well for you, Hideo. Have a merry Christmas.” Patting the small boy on the back, Mars takes his leave, walking towards the corporate headquarters of the bank.

Mars hadn’t had much of a chance to do much work with Team Rocket’s newest Beast (beyond their work during the Mount Pyre assault back in November, that is), so naturally, that must be remedied. It’s not a particularly difficult job in his opinion, but the importance of it does not lie in its difficulty.

Out of thin air, he appears at their rendezvous point, having TELEPORTED. There seem to be no pokémon by his side, but given the fact that he’s here as the blond persona he’s known to use in public and not as Martín del Mar, it can safely be assumed that there’s at least one hidden Zorua or Zoroark.

”Marza. A pleasure.” Marza and Mars, that one would get a chuckle out of him if it weren’t for the fact that they’re working and that during cases like this he only uses codenames. ”Come to Lilycove often? There’s apparently a lowly gang claiming to be bigshots in Team Rocket.”

Perhaps this may be becoming a bit of a tradition between the two of them.

They both have always been incredibly busy people, but last year, during this very same festival, he had come to watch her perform, and even now — despite the things Melody herself isn’t aware of —it’s something Mars thinks back to with fondness. When she had invited him to this year’s performance, of course he had agreed to attend, even if unbeknownst to him she will not be performing today.

priam conrad is indeed quite adept at making a fool of himself, and Mars thinks as much with all of the fondness he has for his favourite overqualified Rocket grunt. However, today, the efficient side of dearest Priam seems to be coming into play, since he actually manages to stop himself from ranting and gets straight to the point.

If Mars kept cookies in his office, he’d give Priam one for doing a good job.

Azelf is the one who gave us both prophecies.” To think that over a year has passed since then, and yet, despite all his efforts, he has heard so terribly little about the Guardians since then. An Unown levitates by the side of the Underboss when he enters the room, watching all those who might already be present. Its expression is as unreadable as that of its avatar; not a sound leaving either of them despite the polite bow of the head with which Mars greets Admin Elisabeth Fiorelli and the rest.

Calm as ever, he takes a seat, clad in a dark suit which seems to perfectly match the colour scheme of the symbol. An Unown-?. The same one that had accompanied him to the heights of Mount Pyre on November 18th.

”Thank you, Admin Fiorelli.” He finally speaks shortly after Elisabeth’s introduction, yet there isn’t even a hint of a smile. ”I believe I forwarded my report on Mount Pyre to everyone here some time ago, but I would be glad to answer any questions anyone might have for me.”

It’s a matter of seconds: an hourglass where the last grains of sand are about to fall. The Nihilego are distracted by the DEEP SEA SCALE, Lugia keeps the ones outside at bay, priam conrad is quick to think of how to help Cillian Quinn, and BARNABY FINCH provides assistance with their escape.

When the all too familiar Gallade is released, Mars understands without a need for further explanations, and a nod is given to Barnaby in confirmation. He trusts him to get Priam out of here safely, and to get himself to safety as well. His own job, however, might be slightly trickier…

”LUGIA! WE’LL MEET YOU BACK AT THE RIFT!” Mars calls out to the Guardian of the Seas as warning when calling back his Metagross, knowing she can likely sense that something is amiss with her avatar. Out of all pokémon, he’s sure she can get back to the rift without a problem, but the idea is still concerning…

”Gavin…” Momentarily, his gaze meets the enraged eyes of his friend and fellow underboss, amber on amber, and without another word, Mars TELEPORTS, putting a hand on Gavin’s shoulder. That’s all it takes. Before another second can pass, he teleports them away.

Only the Unown stays behind, perhaps to keep an eye on all those that remain.

Mars and Gavin reappear far from the Nihilego, the Quaestor Lucis, and the horrors that dwell within the vessel – right by the rift that is meant to take them back to Granite Cave. Passingly, in his mind, there’s the thought of the eggs that have been left behind, and the prize they could have been if he’s right about what they are…

Thankfully, concern wins over greed this time, quick to act once Barnaby and Priam also make it back.

”Let's get moving. We need to get Gavin to the lab.”

For a year now (it has been just about a year since he first met Father Winter in Granite Cave) Mars’ morning routine hasn’t changed: a few days a week he TELEPORTS to Mount Pyre, jogs up the mountain, searches for Unown, and then teleports back home to shower and get ready for work.

Today is a slight change, but in the simple fact that he had gone to Mount Pyre earlier than usual, jogged up the mountain, then down, and decided to make his way through Route 121.

Were the circumstances different, Mars would perhaps recognize her due to her many public accomplishments and her family’s history with the city Team Rocket now oversees, but lighting in caverns is far from the greatest, and the appearance of wild pokémon sure is distracting…
