Most Ultra Beasts (playfully murderous Poipole aside) are notoriously a fucking pain to deal with, and Nihilego is no exception to that. Arguably, it may just be the worst of all, and the reason why shows itself way too suddenly and too fast.

”GAVIN!” Mars is skilled at remaining calm under pressure, at dealing with life-or-death situations and thinking objectively, but when seeing one of the most important people in his life fall victim to the Ultra Beast’s toxins… for once, he actually panics. ”Fuck! We need to get him medical attention before the toxins take more effect.”

He knows exactly the kind of thing a Nihilego’s venom can do, and while there is concern for them when seeing the sudden burst of anger (expressed in the way he suddenly TELEPORTS to BARNABY FINCH’s side and moves him further away from Gavin, doing the same with priam conrad only once sure Barnaby is at a safe distance), beyond all, there is concern for Cillian Quinn’s wellbeing. They can potentially get out of here unharmed, but Gavin had already been attacked. They should be thankful his Dhelmise holds him back.

”We don’t have enough time to deal with the Nihilego.” He tells Barnaby and Priam. ”But we need to get it to leave so we can get Gavin out of here.”

Think, think, think…

Trying to come up with a solution on the spot, Mars pats his pockets in search of a potential answer, and it’s then that he remembers it: the DEEP SEA SCALE. They had found a few of them scattered on the ship’s floor the last time they were here, and while they had thought it to be odd and brought a few back for analysis, the truth is clear now: those gorgeous scales had probably been gathered by the Nihilego that live in the ship.

It’s worth a shot.

Teleporting away from the group but still with the Nihilego in his line of sight, Mars whistles to call to its attention, holding the beautiful scale up and moving it so that it shimmers under the flickering lights. The tentacles that had been reaching for Barnaby and Priam stop there and then, and there are no attacks. The Ultra Beast turns to face him instead. In response, Mars whispers, doing his best impersonation of one of those reckless people in that franchise about fossil pokémon which name can't remember in the heat of the moment:

There’s only a second to act. It moves, Mars throws the scale as far as he can, and then teleports back to where the others stand.

”We need to get out of here NOW.”

”Nihilego? Better have those teleports ready just in case. Last thing we want is to deal with a… smack of Nihilego.”

Nihilego can be classified as whatever the scientific name for Frillish and Jellicent’s genus is, right? It took Mars a couple of seconds to pick the right word, but they sure as hell look like jellyfish, so a smack it is. Regardless, it’s not like they have the luxury of spare time to ponder on such things, and the conversation is abandoned when the group begins to search the Megalopolan ship.

In their search, they split up for a moment, and while priam conrad finds himself being marvelled by the sight of bioluminescent flora growing within the vessel, Mars is much more… disgusted by what he finds. When entering a room, a blob of something wet and viscous drops on his shoulder, and a closer look aided by a flicker of lights reveals dozens upon dozens of eggs.

”I found eggs! They must be from the Ni—” He’s in the middle of calling out to the others when Priam calls out as well, and although his excited shouts are as nonsensical as ever, what BARNABY FINCH has to say marks the situation as clear cause for concern.

Without a second thought, Mars abandons the room with the eggs, rushing out in the direction of the voices with the Unown-X running right beside him. What he finds when he reaches them causes him to pause and blink, and naturally, the Unown mimics him. Is that a megalopolan corpse possessed by a Nihilego?

”You know, I never thought I’d say this, but I think I like it better when Katherine Fairburne pulls that party trick.” He says before whistling one sharp note: a call for his Metagross to join the attack of Barnaby’s Ninetales. From where Armis stands, it shoots its FLASH CANNON with deadly precision.

”You said they’re poison type, right?” Mars reaches for the pokéball holster at his belt, readying another one.
