”Of course I did.” How could he not? They had survived apocalyptic circumstances, they had conquered impossible odds, but not only that, they had ended up gaining so much as a result. Vualable things, power, but most important of all, each other. Martín del Mar is a man who has learned to count his blessings, and among them all, there is none more important to him than the words BARNABY FINCH had spoken on the night before the attack on Mount Pyre.

So, how could he not want to celebrate? How could he not smile into the kiss? How could he not respond with the same passion and wish his hands were free so he could pull Barnaby closer, shut the door behind them, and claim what’s his? Shame he’s holding Champagne and glasses.

”Careful, trésor.” Mars teases once they pull away from the kiss, smirking at Barnaby. ”People might start wondering if I’m cheating on my boyfriend.”

His boyfriend. Silly, how a single word can make him so terribly happy.

”Ah, I can understand that.” Mars laughs lightly at the woman’s comment about her Marshtomp’s enthusiasm, and for now, his fishing rod is set aside in favour of conversation. It’s not like he cares much about fishing up anything interesting anyway; the appeal of fishing to him isn’t the catch, but the experience itself.

When her attention turns to Xanthos, his does as well, a slight smirk tugging at his lips because that first comment definitely had come off the wrong way at first. ”He’s an ILLUMINA POKÉMON. A few hatched earlier in the year… They’re bioluminescent.”

The latter part seems obvious given the subtle glow of the yellow scales in the Dragapult’s body, but it really becomes clear when a small Axew approaches with the clear intent of snacking on some delicious bait. Xanthos stares at it, smacking the sand with his tail, and in an impressive display he enters the ILLUMINA STATE. Even in daylight, the Dragapult shines brightly, surprising the Axew and scaring it for long enough for Mars to casually throw a Luxury Ball.

With two clicks of the banker’s tongue, the dragon returns to its regular state, yawning before approaching Mars and bumping his arm with its head. The Dreepy come out of its horns, flying to perch themselves on the man’s shoulder.

”Ha. Just like that, I guess” He chuckles at the timing, his gaze fixing on the stranger once again. ”I agree, by the way… Just looking at the water is relaxing, especially seas like these.”

It doesn’t really surprise him. Most of his operations are secretive with the intent of being so, and with Team Rocket operating on a need-to-know basis, the possibility of a Rocket grunt who fights at a circuit not knowing of its affiliation isn’t a reach at all. It’s a good thing, in his opinion. Proof that their secrecy is working as intended.

”Most people aren’t.” He admits, his golden gaze falling upon the nearby streetlights. There, by a pole, an Impidimp sneaks curious glances at them, and after a quick look at the Pokémon Storage App in his phone, Mars clicks his tongue.

To Dollar, the command is clear, and an ICY WIND is summoned to slow down the little pokémon before the Persian jumps to chase after it.

A lot can be learned about a person when watching the way they interact with and command their pokémon, and despite the lighthearted nature of this meeting, Mars pays close attention to Hazel’s actions. After all, as much as he may like the archivist’s company, he is still Hazel’s boss, is he not?

”Ah, so before things got really crazy.” He jokes, but to a degree, his words are true. Hoenn had always had its oddities, but during the recent years said oddities had increased to an absurd degree.

When Hazel asks about his own motivations, the underboss is quiet for a moment, and the Unown-X looks up at him curiously while they walk together.

”I wanted a fresh start.” Mars finally admits. A fresh start away from the region that had caused him so much pain, from the family that had taken so much from him, and from all his grief. A fresh start at a place where he could plan his revenge. ”Hoenn is a place full of opportunity to those who know how to seek them. That appealed to me.”

So, in a way, the answer is yes, but truly he had chosen to come here mostly because of Team Rocket and the war they wage.

Mars is skilled at making people feel as if they’re the most important person in the world, and especially so when he actually cares about what they have to say.

As much appreciation as P.O.G Bank’s CEO may have for an adorable Meowth onesie (What had Andrea Vaneau called it again? Cosplaying?), everyone knows that the minds of children are fickle and easily distracted, so in order to keep them entertained, one must be flashy.

Cue the music! Turn on the smoke machine! A mysterious light haze covers the stage when Mars’ turn comes around, and very suddenly and unexpectedly, the banker and his Meowth appear at its very centre. The audience gasps. How had they done it?! Had they teleported or something?! No, in fact, as it is the case with many stages, there’s a well-concealed trap door, but misdirection can make all the difference in the world. After all, this round their performance is all about—

”MAGIC!” Mars loudly declares with a brilliant smile, making a magician’s wand appear in his hand. How had he done that?! There’s no telling, but clad in an elegant tuxedo with a cape that billows right behind him, he makes for quite the sight, and so does the golden Meowth that also has its own miniature tux. What a pair!

”Listen here, everyone! I have a little challenge for you all: open your eyes, pay attention, and watch closely. Only the smartest can figure out this magic trick.” The concert hall fills with excitement as the smoke fades away, indigo glowsticks waving wildly as if to declare that they’re ready to see the magic trick Mars and Coin are about to perform. ”Are you ready? Are you watching? Alright, then… Here it goes… COIN!”

When the magician's wand points at the Meowth, the Pokémon suddenly disappears. Where has it gone?! Can Meowth TELEPORT?! Of course not! It’s only after a few seconds that someone exclaims and gestures, for Coin had left behind a SUBSTITUTE.

Honestly, good for her, but it’s also rather problematic for him, isn’t it? He decides not to comment on it, instead acting as if he’s distracted by their conversation about nicknames.

”Hmm… Don’t think I like Mirós as much as Melita.” It does have a better ring to it. Mars doesn’t bother with explaining the actual reason behind his nickname, which has nothing to do with the Del Mar surname. ”Martini? I do like those, though I prefer to drink my gin straight. It’s my go-to.”
