CONTRARY TO ITS NAME, THE MAJORITY OF THE ULTRA DEEP SEA IS A VAST CAVE-LIKE WORLD. Shafts of light from an unknown source barely penetrate the dark, causing colorful diamond-like rocks to glisten against humid walls. The dim lighting makes the place seem like you're thousands of leagues under the sea... Eerily, an unceasing pulse can be heard like a heart beat that rumbles throughout the realm.[break][break]

Oddly enough, one is able to "swim" through this realm like Water-type Pokemon floating in air.[break][break]

One may stumble upon deep, cold pools of dark water and alien seaweed as they scout out the realm. Segments of this place open up into an astral sea, where islands of mysterious stone are suspended mid-air.

”Hope you’re looking forward to ending up with barnacles on that pretty face.” is one of the first things Mars tells BARNABY FINCH after they step through the rift and into the Ultra Deep Sea. Thankfully for Barnaby though, much had been learned after the group’s previous visit to this particular portion of Ultra Space, and their choices in attire this time around should theoretically be able to withstand the environment much better (emphasis on theoretically).

The plan is simple: continue where they had left off when they had come here with Zev Harcourt.

The QUAESTOR LUCIS awaits them, and just as before, the underboss chooses his Mantine as his method of transportation, standing on its back with an Unown-X by his side while the Kite Pokémon effortlessly swims through the air as if they were surfing. Splashfest memories, anyone?

Whether it had been the simple effect of stress due to being in Ultra Space or the environment acting against them (Mars, who never blames himself for anything, is certain its the latter), it’s clear that that’s exactly what had happened last time, and doubtlessly the last thing they need is priam conrad having another outburst.

”...Do you think we could power it up?” He asks Cillian Quinn and Priam once they make it to the ship, for they’re both more familiar with Megalopolan tech and more scientifically inclined than him.

Gavin, though less than thrilled to be returning to the Ultra Deep Sea after their last experience, is stoic as ever. They'd been sure to brief BARNABY FINCH on their last expedition so that the admin was prepared; though the underboss himself also wears more protective gear to avoid contact with the hostile environment, he feels no reassurance from extra layers.[break][break]

Especially when, not two minutes into their expedition, he's beset upon by snickering Poipole who dart out of the way of Lugia's spiked tail when she lashes it toward the offending Beasts.[break][break]

Why me?[break][break]

He keeps his exasperation to himself, maintaining an illusion of calm.[break][break]

I hate this fucking place.[break][break]

On the deck of The Quaestor Lucis, he keeps his back pressed against a surface wherever possible, shrewd amber eyes tracking the movements of the Poipole who have never left, merely found their efforts repelled by the underbosses Pokemon.[break][break]

His Lucario growls at them, and they giggle in response.[break][break]

"Do we want to power it up?" Gavin replies, gruff as he glances toward Martín del Mar. "Perhaps we could find a way, but we don't know their technology well. Who knows what it might do? I don't, at any rate."[break][break]

Scientist he might've been, once, but his studies are far more limited.

because barnacles. BARNABY FINCH. similar spelling.

the question on whether they actually power up the ship or not is to be decided between the two, but priam squeezes in something that might already be common knowledge between them just to be able to say something and be a part of the conversation.

"if it's megalopolan tech, then they probably use, um, primal energy! yeah, that!" priam points out. he remembers their machines being powered by mega stones.

Cillian Quinn seems to veer on the safer side instead of the thrill of the adventure. while he's surprised that Martín del Mar was on the other end of the decision making, he supposed it's because he's just more inclined to be curious on things not meant to be understood.

just like the lake guardians and the unown report.

"best case scenario, we get the good shit though," he tells gavin, thoughts unfiltered. "we already almost died. what's the worst that can happen?"

priam is prepared this time. a musharna perches on his head, ready to eat any daydreams that might result from any surge of paranoia or any other invasive thought that affects his mind. if it can eat dreams, then it can eat any other thought in his head.

"Barnacles? Arceus, what kind of crazy shit am I in for?" Barnaby already had an idea, though, of course. Martín del Mar had filled him in on the important details from their first expedition prior to venturing into this realm for a second time. He'd worn similar clothing, for example, to better protect himself from the strange environment.

"The man lives for puns, Priam." One could either laugh... or suffer in silence like Barnaby usually did. God, he hated puns. Not that barnacle/Barnaby was a very good one. Sorry, priam conrad.

As for the suggestion of turning on The Quaestor Lucis, Barnaby was skeptical, especially considering they were already attracting Ultra Beasts. He kept a cautious eye on the POIPOLE floating around Cillian Quinn, seemingly captivated by the underboss for some reason. Still, if their goal was to explore the ship, it would probably be easier with it all lit up.

Besides, Priam made a good point. It was all or nothing in a realm like this, so why not take a chance?

"We can get in and get out a lot quicker with the ship turned on, right? It might be better in the long run if we go down that route."

Cillian Quinn’s caution is understandable, and to a degree, Mars shares in the sentiment, but priam conrad’s assumption is also correct: his need for knowledge urges him to learn more about the Quaestor Lucis. They say curiosity killed the cat, and perhaps that should be a concerning saying to a man many associate with Meowth and who has almost died because of his own curiosity more than once now.

”That’s a good point.” He nods in response to BARNABY FINCH’s comment. ”No clue if it can move with how damaged it looks, but maybe we could get it working eventually. If anything, I’m thinking that if we power it up we can at least find data on this place, which would be really useful.”

It’s then that he looks at Gavin once more, squinting at the Poipole that have been relentlessly harassing his fellow underboss. Where there’s Poipole there’s likely Naganadel not far behind, and that sure isn’t a good sign at all.

”I’ll have pokémon ready to teleport us away, but we should at least explore the rest of the ship, right?”

They hadn’t gotten too far last time, given that they had been attacked by Dhelmise.

Keeping Priam’s comment on primal energy in mind, Mars releases his Metagross — the same one that had been affected by the Primal Reversion of skyler dross’ Kyogre back when Necrozma had attacked. If its this that the Megalopolan ship reacts to or to the mega stone the pokémon wears, is unclear, but lights flicker on and off for a few seconds.

Smiling just so slightly at the sight, Mars claps the shoulder of Team Rocket’s most accomplished grunt:

Apparently they needn't touch anything for the ship to power up; Gavin flinches as the ship rumbles to life around them, clenching his jaw hard enough to hurt. The Poipole only seem to draw glee from his misery, darting closer to attempt to sting him. Faolan DETECTS their mischief in time to intercept, the scarred Lucario as dour as its master.[break][break]

NIHILEGO.[break][break]

He feels the intensity of alarm in Lugia's telepathic cry, the force of it making his head ache. He touches a hand to his temple. It had been Nihilego to corrupt and almost kill the shadowed legend; she has harbored a hatred for them since.[break][break]

"There are — Nihilego around the ship."[break][break]

He wants to ask how many, but the Beast Ball at his grows heavy with Lugia's presence; it would seem she had no desire to tempt fate a second time with the Ultra Beasts.[break][break]

"Perhaps they were drawn by the light."[break][break]

What he doesn't know is that it's his presence that draws them here, much like it had drawn the mischievous Poipole that dance out of Lucario's reach.

as much as Cillian Quinn theorizes that ultra beasts were attracted to the illumination, so does priam. from the corner of his eye, he spots a hue of light differing from the ones that the ship has. the bluish green tempts him from the corner of his eyes, prompting him to diverge from the party to explore.

"they're poison-types, supposedly anyways." it's a safe assumption, given Katherine Fairburne's and other instances of rocket experimenting with one to start their artificial shadow pokemon. "you guys are psychic-type ner- er, enthusiast. just blast 'em! i gotchu with the covering fire."

as soon as the attempt to take off the edge was fired, he gets into exploring.

bioluminescent sea plants attach themselves to the steel walls of the ship. it transitions from purely manmade to a garden of glowing, nuclear sea anemone. priam is at awe, shouting for the rest of the party to come.

"hey guys! look at what i found!"

as soon as he calls them in, he hears a squelch from the background. covered by barnacles and other growth, a megalopolan creeps out from a corner of the corridor further back. clearly lifeless, priam shows excitement as he backs off.

"oh shit, i've seen this before!" he finds himself saying before running back to the party. "i-it's like that one thing! you know, the thing! when there's like a thing trapped back on hoenn and rocket did the thing, you know!"

Perhaps because he hadn't yet experienced the horrors of Ultra Deep Space as his three comrades had, Barnaby was understandably apprehensive but not without a healthy dose of curiosity and wonder at the otherworldly realm around him.

Especially when the ship came to life, illuminating the surrounding murk. Barnaby's eyes darted around, worried that the sudden light would cause creatures to burst from the darkness... but it was only the POIPOLE who remained. And a few NIHILEGO, though they stayed closer to the hull of The Quaestor Lucis, as Cillian Quinn pointed out.

With such an open invitation they couldn't not board the vessel now. Still, at priam conrad's suggestion, Barnaby released his NINETALES just in case.

He entered the ship and began exploring a cabin close to where they came in, but didn't find much of interest before Priam's call caused him to rush to where the ROCKET grunt stood. He was going on about... something. Barnaby figured the 'thing' Priam was referencing had likely occurred before his time with Hoenn ROCKET, so he looked to Martín del Mar and Cillian Quinn for any flicker of recognition.

"Thing?" He asked, clearly confused.

Movement at the corner of his eye caught Barnaby's attention - the rotting, sluggish Megalopolan that Priam had pointed out stumbling toward their group, arms extended and ready to snatch at any unprotected flesh.

"What the fuck is that?" Immediately, Barnaby reached for his Tera Orb and instructed Sybille to intervene.

An intensely hot aura around her, pale green crystals began to sprout until they covered the entirety of the NINETALES' body. Once the transformation was complete her jaws parted to unleash a SOLAR BEAM upon the Megalopolan.

Nihilego can be classified as whatever the scientific name for Frillish and Jellicent’s genus is, right? It took Mars a couple of seconds to pick the right word, but they sure as hell look like jellyfish, so a smack it is. Regardless, it’s not like they have the luxury of spare time to ponder on such things, and the conversation is abandoned when the group begins to search the Megalopolan ship.

In their search, they split up for a moment, and while priam conrad finds himself being marvelled by the sight of bioluminescent flora growing within the vessel, Mars is much more… disgusted by what he finds. When entering a room, a blob of something wet and viscous drops on his shoulder, and a closer look aided by a flicker of lights reveals dozens upon dozens of eggs.

”I found eggs! They must be from the Ni—” He’s in the middle of calling out to the others when Priam calls out as well, and although his excited shouts are as nonsensical as ever, what BARNABY FINCH has to say marks the situation as clear cause for concern.

Without a second thought, Mars abandons the room with the eggs, rushing out in the direction of the voices with the Unown-X running right beside him. What he finds when he reaches them causes him to pause and blink, and naturally, the Unown mimics him. Is that a megalopolan corpse possessed by a Nihilego?

”You know, I never thought I’d say this, but I think I like it better when Katherine Fairburne pulls that party trick.” He says before whistling one sharp note: a call for his Metagross to join the attack of Barnaby’s Ninetales. From where Armis stands, it shoots its FLASH CANNON with deadly precision.

”You said they’re poison type, right?” Mars reaches for the pokéball holster at his belt, readying another one.

Though his tone is clipped with annoyance, it doesn't appear directed at their younger comrade. Rather, his attention remains fixed on the Poipole who have suddenly grown far bolder, whizzing around his irate Lucario and snickering at the attempts of his Dhelmise to execute them with its PHANTOM FORCE.

"I despise psychic-types," he adds flatly, with a weighted pause. It's a little-known fact about him that he'd ordinarily keep to himself, but he's too on edge to care at present. "Except the obvious."

Lugia might've been amused if she were around to hear that.

The possessed Megalopolan proves just the distraction needed for Gavin to take his eyes away from the window where he'd been watching the Nihilego drift ever closer to the ship. They'd seemed passive enough, the threatening presence of the Megalopolan far more pressing.

Until tentacles slip through gaps in the decaying ship's defenses and wrap around his neck.

"What ⁠— fuck!"
[break][break]

An alarmed exclamation is choked off by the pressure at his throat, and genuine fear shatters the stoic exterior of the underboss as he's forcibly reminded of dahlia goode's possession by the creatures (witnessed by Gavin in Dialga's time stream) and, more alarming, Lugia's own corruption at their hands. Pain lances through his neck as stinging tendrils plant their dangerous toxins.

Gnawing fear is replaced by anger, clouding his judgement and thoughts as his features contort into a wordless snarl.

He turns on his allies, fingers curling around a knife at his belt. In spite of its own SHADOW nature, his Dhelmise seems to detect that something is amiss with its master ⁠— before Gavin can lunge for one of his fellow Rockets, the spectral anchor ALLY SWITCHES with them so that the blade clangs harmlessly off rusted steel.

BARNABY FINCH is quick to fire off an attack to defend them. priam grabs on to his musharna as it gives them room to breathe. unfortunately, it takes priam a good while to make use of it.

"yup, yup," he answers Martín del Mar frantically. eyes dart around to look for a good move for his musharna, but for a pokemon he barely uses, priam isn't aware of how the limits of its capabilities extend.

its feat as a poison-type is quickly shown with how it manages to infect Cillian Quinn with its venom. aggression starts, and his own pokemon takes the hit for them handily. his heart races, mortified with the reaction.

"w-w-w-what are you doin', sir?" he asks as he pushes the musharna in front of him and the underboss. "hypnosis!"

dream mist gets expelled from the pokemon. a soothing aura extends from the psychic-type to Cillian Quinn in an attempt to exhaust him mentally, or at least, slow him down in whatever he was doing.

the environment they were at clearly messes with the mind. priam's not too sure if it would interfere with a pokemon move of similar nature, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

BARNABY FINCH and Martín del Mar can handle the nihilego, right?

EVANGELINE ⨀ ✨ NATURAL CURE | Protect / Psychic / Power Gem / Scald / Cosmic Power / Thunder Wave

Yeah, that curiosity and wonder Barnaby was feeling earlier quickly dissipated after seeing Cillian Quinn being nearly strangled by the tentacle of a NIHILEGO. Even more so when the ROCKET underboss lunged at priam conrad, knife drawn and obviously intending to injure or kill.

Luckily, Gavin's DHELMISE was quick to act and take Priam's place, giving the grunt time to react. But would his MUSHARNA's HYPNOSIS be enough to subdue the NIHILEGO-influenced underboss? If not, perhaps eliminating the NIHILEGO itself would help snap Gavin from his poisoned stupor. In the meantime, hopefully DHELMISE could wrap it's tendrils around it's master to keep him in place.

"You good, Priam?" Barnaby called out, a hard edge to his voice, while withdrawing a second Luxury Ball from his pocket. From it he released his STARMIE, Evangeline.

"If it's weak to Psychic-types then that's what I'll give it. You two—" He waved his Pokémon forward. "Psychic and Extrasensory on that giant jellyfish over there!"

With the Megalopolan taken care of, his NINETALES rushed forward once she was called to join Evangeline. Both Pokémon immediately began gathering psychic energy within them before letting it burst toward the NIHILEGO.

Most Ultra Beasts (playfully murderous Poipole aside) are notoriously a fucking pain to deal with, and Nihilego is no exception to that. Arguably, it may just be the worst of all, and the reason why shows itself way too suddenly and too fast.

”GAVIN!” Mars is skilled at remaining calm under pressure, at dealing with life-or-death situations and thinking objectively, but when seeing one of the most important people in his life fall victim to the Ultra Beast’s toxins… for once, he actually panics. ”Fuck! We need to get him medical attention before the toxins take more effect.”

He knows exactly the kind of thing a Nihilego’s venom can do, and while there is concern for them when seeing the sudden burst of anger (expressed in the way he suddenly TELEPORTS to BARNABY FINCH’s side and moves him further away from Gavin, doing the same with priam conrad only once sure Barnaby is at a safe distance), beyond all, there is concern for Cillian Quinn’s wellbeing. They can potentially get out of here unharmed, but Gavin had already been attacked. They should be thankful his Dhelmise holds him back.

”We don’t have enough time to deal with the Nihilego.” He tells Barnaby and Priam. ”But we need to get it to leave so we can get Gavin out of here.”

Think, think, think…

Trying to come up with a solution on the spot, Mars pats his pockets in search of a potential answer, and it’s then that he remembers it: the DEEP SEA SCALE. They had found a few of them scattered on the ship’s floor the last time they were here, and while they had thought it to be odd and brought a few back for analysis, the truth is clear now: those gorgeous scales had probably been gathered by the Nihilego that live in the ship.

It’s worth a shot.

Teleporting away from the group but still with the Nihilego in his line of sight, Mars whistles to call to its attention, holding the beautiful scale up and moving it so that it shimmers under the flickering lights. The tentacles that had been reaching for Barnaby and Priam stop there and then, and there are no attacks. The Ultra Beast turns to face him instead. In response, Mars whispers, doing his best impersonation of one of those reckless people in that franchise about fossil pokémon which name can't remember in the heat of the moment:

There’s only a second to act. It moves, Mars throws the scale as far as he can, and then teleports back to where the others stand.
