Back in my day…” Naturally, that last part is said in a delightful (not) and perfect (far from it) Galarian lilt, as if to imitate the manner of speech of our dear Remiel Calcifet. As per usual, Mars is just teasing him, obviously. “Jokes aside, I think you’d make a good teacher.”

That one is most definitely not a joke, what sure looks like one though is the Pokémon that soon approaches the group. It looks like an ice cream cone. A giant, sentient ice cream cone. Mars is not a fan, but it at least will make good target practice for his Gholdengo.

Many of those who know him would say that Martín del Mar always has a plan, and often times, those many would be right. The Safari Zone is no exception to this rule. In fact, when viewing the list of the warden’s current stock, he had taken the time to determine which Pokémon he’d like to capture and how many visits to the Safari Zone it would take to get them all.

There are a lot conversation they should have; things that been delayed and left for another time. This happens to be one them, and in the end, if there’s any lesson to have been taught to Hoenn during the nerve-wracking months that led to 99943 Meteno’s arrival, wouldn’t that be that there’s no time like the present.

Especially when it comes this.

“No, we can’t.” He agrees, his smile ever playful. However, when his gaze meets that of his lover, it does not part — watching him through what it is then said. “…Which begs the question, doesn’t it? Do you think we should make people here aware of it? Since, after all, most of them will know that I’m dating this one exquisitely handsome and talented HNN reporter. You’ve probably heard of him. BARNABY FINCH? Don’t get too jealous, hm?”

There’s a teasing wink, but the question is serious and honest all the same: if Barnaby wants to keep his public persona and his role as one of Team Rocket’s admin separate, letting the rest of the syndicate know they’re in a relationship is probably not the wisest approach. It’s an annoying thought, because honestly, after everything they just went through, after coming so close to losing him, if it were up to Mars, he’d shout it to the world.

As per usual with the two of them, emotions like those are kept at bay by playfulness and jokes, and it’s after a sip of champagne that Mars’ gaze drifts to the couch once more, looking at it for a second before his attention returns to the now owner of this office:

Ah, the sweet and sharp scent of freshly cut grass, the sound of carts making their way through fields of green, and the skittering of Indeedee caddies cursed to spend their time carrying golf bags they can barely hold all because they feed off people’s gratitude.

There’s nothing quite like a morning at the golf course.

If anyone were to ask Mars, he would laugh and say that golfing is an essential skill when you’re a businessman, because most businessmen out there have already gone through their midlife crisis, and they sure as hell love golfing. Buttering them up on the course and then getting them to agree to unfavourable deals is as easy as can be. Mars himself, though? Well, he clearly enjoys this much more than what he would admit…

There he is, carefully choosing his club from among those in the leather golf bag the Indeedee holds for him, clad in elegantly checkered slim trousers, a black piqué polo, white shoes and matching gloves. His brunette hair is stylishly tousled, touched by the breeze coming from the marina, and upon his lips there is a cordial and ever so pleased smile.

”How’s this new year treating you?” He asks Frank Caffey once his choice is made. ”Let me guess… Crowds regretting their previous financial decisions?”

As a banker, Mars is all too familiar with new year’s effect, but not every new year comes paired with having survived the damn apocalypse. People made one too many poor financial decisions during the time of crisis, but of course, that does means more business for men like them.

One of the League’s legendary pokémon not being violent will always be beneficial to Team Rocket, and even if they’re willing to fight when necessary, there’s a huge difference between craving conflict and doing so out of necessity.

While Adrian sends our dear Howitzer after a running Blissey, Mars happens to his own target. Among the nearby bushes, something moves when he turns to get a look at it, and the overhead view provided by the Unown tells him the truth as clearly as can be: a Gloom.

Instead of sending the Unown after it, Xanthos is released from a Luxury Ball, and the Dragapult is quick to dart after the wild pokémon when Mars gives him a whistled command. FIRE BLAST swiftly meets its mark.

He had apparently been in Littleroot instead, though.

Unfortunate for him, without a doubt, but despite the fact that Mars himself had taken an active part in planning such assaults, he finds himself glad that Locke had made it out okay. He has always thought of harming civilians as foolish and needless.

”I was at home.” The lie comes smooth; easy. He’s too used to these things, and this one in particular is a lie he has been telling too often lately. There’s a Snorunt waddling around in the distance, and for a short moment, Mars stares at it. ”Got a nice view of the desert primal point’s activation from my balcony. Those really were something.”

He turns to look at Locke then, and when he does, he gestures for Dollar to go deal with the Snorunt. The Persian moves swiftly through the snow, as if he’s actually enjoying the change of environment.

The sound of HIDDEN POWER striking its target cut through the iceland, and the look Mars gives Locke is a concerned one.

As he’s about to leave the route, something catches his eye: at the shore, by the ocean, a Solrock basks under the rising sun. It makes for a bit of a hilarious sight, given the Pokémon's shape, but sadly, Mars doesn’t really have much time to be entertained by things of that kind.

On his flawless choice in attire, on the way blond hair had been perfectly styled to appear as if it's naturally this way after hours of care, on the honest smile upon his lips, and above all, on the cobalt eyes that gaze into his from behind a mask of crimson-tipped feathers. Eyes as blue as the seas to which Martín del Mar belongs. Eyes he could get lost in.

Summer Atreides is right, they are acting disgustingly cute.

That one gets a laugh out of him; a joyous sound that rises to mingle among the endless chatter and music that overtakes the museum.

”Cariño, green is not your colour.” Mars teases his dear friend, a playful smirk tugging at his lips, and when Summer makes her guess in response to Barnaby’s question, he can’t help but find himself laughing once again.

Barnaby could probably easily argue otherwise, but then again, Summer has never heard Mars reciting poetry out of the blue. Things like those have their time and place.

”You should have heard him, it was all very sweet.” And romantic. A moment he replays in his head over and over. Still, it would be cruel of him to tease Barnaby for too long, wouldn't it? So, for now, Mars turns the conversation towards Summer. "Ah, but what about you? What mischief have you been up to?"

Just as during the assault on Mount Pyre, a multitude of odd events had taken place on such a day, but among them, the news priam conrad had recently shared with him is one of the things that sparks the most interest.
