Ah, the sweet and sharp scent of freshly cut grass, the sound of carts making their way through fields of green, and the skittering of Indeedee caddies cursed to spend their time carrying golf bags they can barely hold all because they feed off people’s gratitude.

There’s nothing quite like a morning at the golf course.

If anyone were to ask Mars, he would laugh and say that golfing is an essential skill when you’re a businessman, because most businessmen out there have already gone through their midlife crisis, and they sure as hell love golfing. Buttering them up on the course and then getting them to agree to unfavourable deals is as easy as can be. Mars himself, though? Well, he clearly enjoys this much more than what he would admit…

There he is, carefully choosing his club from among those in the leather golf bag the Indeedee holds for him, clad in elegantly checkered slim trousers, a black piqué polo, white shoes and matching gloves. His brunette hair is stylishly tousled, touched by the breeze coming from the marina, and upon his lips there is a cordial and ever so pleased smile.

”How’s this new year treating you?” He asks Frank Caffey once his choice is made. ”Let me guess… Crowds regretting their previous financial decisions?”

As a banker, Mars is all too familiar with new year’s effect, but not every new year comes paired with having survived the damn apocalypse. People made one too many poor financial decisions during the time of crisis, but of course, that does means more business for men like them.

Like Martín del Mar, Frank had taken up golfing for business reasons. There had been no better way to endear himself to Black City's elite than rounds on the green, and as a result, Frank had become somewhat proficient at the sport.[break][break]

He also associated it with class and wealth, so to be invited to a golf course again after his recent troubles felt like a success.[break][break]

"Everything's looking promising this year," he told his companion, taking his turn to select a golf club from the bag. "Clients are scrambling to correct their mistakes, and many of the referrals from POG Bank are referring others to me, too."[break][break]

Once he'd made his selection, he joined Martín at the tee. Since the younger man had scored better at the last hole, he would go first. Frank waited his turn with a mild smile.[break][break]

"How about you?" he asked.

"Ah, that's great to hear." Mars smiles while setting up his swing. Financial decisions made while in distress are the downfall of many, but in that downfall men like them benefit. Mars has called it wanting to help people get back on their feet, make good financial choices, and thrive economically, but is that really the reality of it?

The truth of it is left unsaid, for Mars' gaze and focus remain on the ball and the distant flag that marks the hole. He swings with a practiced motion, hitting the ball and watching its trajectory. It reaches the far end of the fairway yet the green, thankfully missing the nearby bunker. Mildly satisfied, he steps aside so that Frank can take his turn.

"Bank's doing well, as other my other investments. Didn't really lose much with the meteor situation." He'd say 'thankfully', but he doesn't really believe that to be the case. Mars is a man who is always careful with his investments, and this is a large part of the reason for his success. "Personally, though? Couldn't be better, even if I'm busier than ever. Just got back from a short vacation in Kalos, actually."

Frank watched as the golf ball soared through the air in an expert arc. He passed Mars a grin as he took his place at the tee. "Great shot!"[break][break]

A light smack momentarily broke the serene atmosphere of the golf course as Frank hit his own ball with a practiced swing. It landed not far from Mars'. From where the two men stood, it was difficult to tell whose ball had landed closer to the hole.[break][break]

"That's excellent news," Frank said to Mars regarding the bank CEO's business success in the wake of the meteor. Together, the men strolled down the fairway toward their balls, the Indeedee caddie following at a hurried scramble.[break][break]

"Winter in Kalos sounds like a lot of fun. I've only gone during the summer, but I think I'd like to take a winter trip myself some time. Did you do any sightseeing around the region, or was it just a cozy getaway trip to one city or town?" Frank asked.[break][break]

He had visited the region only once, several years ago at his wife's behest. Jackie's grandparents were Kalosian and he'd humored her with the trip shortly after the birth of their second child.[break][break]

It had been, perhaps, the first of many hints that their marriage had started to unravel.
