Ji-Ji sniffed at the flower, his mustachioed snout kept mere centimeters away from its petals by his trainer's firm grip. The mysterious plant had suddenly cropped up in the same field as their Gracidea sprout, and Locke wasn't yet sure if it was safe for their Drampa to nose at. Especially since…

"I know buddy, I know. It's kinda like that tree…"

While the leaves and petals of the flower appeared normal enough, the pistil at its center was obviously crystal-like in nature, not unlike the tree the two of them had encounter on Route 113, or the Tree of Life in Slateport. Granted, those trees never glowed such a vibrant blue, but he still wasn't about to just let Ji-Ji go poking it. Not without proper investigation first.

What would a man like Martín del Mar visit Petalburg Woods for? Quite a lot of things, actually, given the facility that lies hidden near the southernmost edge of said forest. However, thanks to his recent unexpected encounter with klaus anchoret in the area, and being well aware of Petalburg’s recent change in gym leadership, there’s now a higher level of caution that comes with it.

No teleporting, for starters. He enters the woods from Rustboro City, as if he were going for a casual walk, and dressed fittingly so. Dark jeans, chelsea boots, a coat, and peeking from his left shoulder, the amorphous and semitransparent figure of a Ditto that clings to his coat. One of the few pokémon Mars allows to perch itself on him, and one that feels almost weightless after all the training they have done to grow accustomed to such things.

That’s exactly why the Ditto is with him, honestly, and it’s the Ditto that first notices the strangers in the distance – making a babbling noise to alert his owner of their presence. ”Hm?”

Crystablooms are no unexpected sight by now, the forest seems to be another place where they have chosen to grow in abundance, but the sight of the Drampa is unexpected indeed, and even more so that of the courier that stands next to it. Is this a fated encounter, then?

”Pretty, aren’t they?” It’s with calm that Mars smiles when he approaches – a smile that comes naturally. His amber gaze falls upon Locke then, a brow being quirked inquisitively just as the Ditto babbles a greeding. ”I think we might need to stop running into each other like this, Locke.”

Locke jumped at the sudden sound of another voice, dropping their hold on Ji-Ji enough for the Drampa's nose to fully smack into the luminescent flower. He reeled back with an old man sneeze, scattering bright blue pollen into the air.

"M-Martin!" Locke sputtered as they turned to face their friend. "Ya shouldn't sneak up on people this time of night ya know!"

Granted, the other man wasn't at fault for his skittishness, despite how often their encounters ended in some disaster or another. He did glance over the POG Bank CEO's shoulder though, just to make sure he hadn't led any such trouble into his little corner of the woods.

The only thing he'd spot, of course, was a sweet little Ditto.

Locke gave the pink blob a small wave as he properly registered Martin's greeting. "Do you know what these are?" It wouldn't surprise him, given the man's apparent wealth of esoteric knowledge.

As much as he may dislike this simple fact of life, Mars would be the first to claim that there are a lot of things he’s yet to learn. However, as fate would have it, he does indeed know the answer to Locke’s question. Or, well, at least he knows part of the answer.

”I hear they named them ‘Crystablooms’. Fitting, right?” All too well he remembers the day when he had accompanied Raphael Pryde to collect a specimen of the bioluminescent flowers that had sprouted near the Tree of Life, mostly to ensure the blooms would cause no harm. It’s the memory that makes him glance at their surroundings, a hand reaching for one of the minimised Luxury Balls at his belt to ensure no wild pokémon had been lured by the light. For now, none come. ”From what I know they’re the result of a abundance of energy.”

The words are chosen carefully, for they bring reminders of the warnings the Lake Guardians had given them, as well as reminders of the claims made by the woman at the last floor of the Fleur Tea Atelier. Hoenn needs no intervention when it comes to bringing new life.

Caught up in recalling all of this as he is, Mars barely registers the way the Ditto slides off his shoulder and onto the ground, only noticing once the semi-transparent blob throws itself towards one of the glowing flowers – completely covering it.

”Seriously? What do you think you’re doing?!”

Fitting indeed. But it at least confirmed the…Crystablooms weren't about to make his precious companion explode or anything.

…Probably not a thought to voice out loud in present company.

"Energy…" Locke mused. The word tickled something in the back of his mind, until the memory of the museum incident and Uxie's appearance there suddenly surfaced. "Oh! Actually, it's good that you're here! I'd totally forgot about it, but-"

Martin's Ditto decided to charge off at the same moment Ji-Ji cut in with a low whine, poking at his trainer's back until they turned to face the dragon. The glowing dragon.

"H-Huh?! Ji-Ji!" Locke cried, fretfully trying to wipe the dusting of blue pollen from their Drampa. "Are you okay? It doesn't hurt does it?"

Useful as his Ditto may be turning out to be, Mars had admittedly not thought of a name for it just yet. Perhaps he should have. Perhaps, if he had, the damn gelatinous blob would listen to him when telling it to stop that.

No, of course that doesn’t work. From the very tips of its petals, the crystabloom begins to be consumed by the Transform Pokémon, disintegrating into the amorphous little slime that begins to acquire a concerningly blue hue. Bright blue. Bioluminescent blue.

”What the hell…” Mars sighs, crouching down and grabbing a fallen twig to try to poke the Ditto off what’s left of the crystabloom. It doesn’t work, of course, but he sure as hell doesn’t want to touch the damn thing while it’s glowing like that, and sending it back into its pokéball in this state sounds like a bad idea.

Tired and annoyed, Mars sighs, turning his attention to Locke only to see that their Drampa also seems to be in the mood for eating the local suspicious-looking flora.

”It doesn’t look like anything too bad is happening to them, but we might want to head to the nearest pokémon centre just in case…”

Nothing too bad and yet his Ditto now looks as if it came straight out of a glow slime ad.

"R-Right…" Would putting the Drampa in his Pokéball make it permanent? They couldn't be sure, so better safe than sorry.

"Petalburg should be closest," Locke said as they clambered onto Ji-Ji's back and extended a hand down to Martin and his glowing Ditto. "Here, I can tell you about this thing with the Lilycove museum on the way."

Once one flower is consumed, leaving nothing but the crystal that had risen as if to become its stigma, the Ditto attempts to move onto the next – babbling happily while mercilessly consuming flowers. Apparently, it must really like the taste, and that wouldn’t be a problem if it weren’t for the fact that with each petal consumed, the Ditto’s new cyan colouration seems to become more and more intense.

”Good gods. What’s wrong with you?” Mars asks with a sigh before finally biting the bullet and deciding to call the glowing gelatinous blob back to the confines of a Luxury Ball. If it causes the Ditto to permanently stay this way, so be it, he has another, even though it’ll be a pain to start the delicate training process all over again.

Mars tries not to think about that part so much and instead turns his attention to Locke – the courier’s words finally being understood for what they truly are. Something had happened to Locke. Something they want him to know about. Something that, if so, likely has to do with the Lake Trio.

”The Lilycove Museum? What happened? Are you alright?” The questions are asked calmly as ever, but considering the way things often go for them and how things are in Hoenn, they are of relevance. All too well he remembers the terrified and helpless look Locke Jamison had given him back when their pokémon had died and they had seen visions of doom, and perhaps from that day on, Mars had been filled with a certain need to protect both Locke and Eris Halla alike – like younger siblings, of sorts.

Admittedly, he hasn’t really done the great at it, though, and it’s frustrating to know so.

A bitter thought, yet the admin’s expression never betrays him, taking Locke’s offered hand and climbing onto the Drampa. Might as well find out what’s going on… With both the museum and their glowing pokémon alike.

Locke lowered their goggles to cover their eyes, offering a pair to Martin as the other man settled in, before giving Ji-Ji an encouraging tug upwards and taking off. The glow effect had spread from the Drampa's snout to the rest of his body by now, reflecting off the forest canopy below. If it made flying at night this easy, maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if Ji-Ji stayed like this.

"Right! So I was at the museum in Lilycove a couple months back, and a whole lotta stuff happened! A weird lab, more of those white-haired guys, buncha Unown and Dream Mist, it was crazy!" He rattled off above the wind. "But the big thing that happened was that Uxie actually showed up! Or, like, a version of it I guess? But it gave me another one of those prophecies, something about energy and 'life coming in threes' and some kinda fourth thing that'll ruin it or something. I wrote it all down once I remembered, I can show ya in Petalburg!"

He turned back to give Martin an uneasy look. "I figure you're better at figurin' this kinda thing out than me, so…"
