Having just purchased her cabin in Littleroot, Matilda supposed it was time to furnish it. The weather was manageable, but central heating and an actual bed sure sounded nice. Making sure the list was pulled up on her phone she enters Mauville City to begin her hunt.[break][break]

More people than she'd expected were wandering about. Perhaps the weather? She thought to herself, but a soft voice in her head reminded her that she had, in fact, brought a shopping buddy with her. Perhaps, is all the soft voice says.[break][break]

Matilda looks at the Gothitelle next to her with a nervous smile, and the Gothitelle's stoic expression changes for just a moment to give her a small reassuring smile. We will find what we need.[break][break]

The sounds of the city echo around them as the two head up a set of stairs, beginning their search.

If Mars had been the sort of person who believed in coincidences, he would have called this a great one. Yet, he wasn’t. Of course he wasn’t. And so, the fact that Matilda Greenlaw happened to visit the city where he resided on the exact day when he too was doing some shopping was to be called chance or maybe, just maybe, a matter of fate.

See, his penthouse up in the heights of Mauville Hills was perfectly furnished – beautiful, stylish, and of modern decor that suited the banker’s taste excellently. But, for all of its wonder, Mars had never considered it to be his home and perhaps it was in the spirit of changing that that he decided to go shopping on this particular afternoon. Perhaps, Serena Malcolm was to blame, for the sight of his penthouse being decorated for the holidays may have just sparked something in him…

Did he expect to run into someone he knew?

There was always the possibility, but out of all people, he sure didn’t imagine it would be the woman he met at the Galarian ambassador’s Christmas party.

Still, Mars being Mars, he smiles ever so brightly when seeing her.

Whirling around at the sound of her name, Matilda spots a familiar face nearby. "Mars!" She cries out excitedly. Dashing over to wrap him in a hug she holds him tight, her cheek resting on his chest.[break][break]

It isn't until her arms are around him that she reminds herself Not everyone likes hugs, you should've asked. Her eyes flutter open and she lets go of him, clearing her throat and flashing him her signature sunny smile. Gesturing to all the shops around them she asks, "What're you doing here? You strike me as the kind of guy who has people to do his shopping for him." A wink is added to emphasize the latter sentence's sarcasm, but her question is genuine.[break][break]

From behind Matilda Garnet slowly approaches, her stride never breaking a calm stroll. The Gothitelle raises an eyebrow at Mars and the corner of her lips curl into the barest hint of a smile before her expression returns to its neutral stony mask.

There’s a soft and quiet chuckle when arms suddenly wrap around him, the gesture being returned in the form of a hand gently resting on Matilda’s back. Mars has never been one to mind physical affection, especially when coming from someone he considers a friend.

”Why, because I’m rich?”

Despite the way he raises a brow, the question is also obviously a joke, even if he knows that that’s exactly why people would think things like those of him… and probably also because he’s a busy businessman (in which case, they wouldn’t be entirely wrong).

”If you want something done right, do it yourself, no?” He winks then. ”Jokes aside… I was thinking of doing some redecorating and I live in Mauville. How about you?”

Mattie smiles and bounces up on her toes, seemingly having more energy than her body could retain. "It's true, good help is so hard to find," she says in a mockingly wistful tone as though she could empathize. Garnet cuts her eyes at her Trainer and Matilda quickly backpedals. "No no Garnet, I don't mean you," she assures the almost human Pokemon, pink gently coloring her cheeks as she clears her throat uncomfortably.[break][break]

Garnet nods once in forgiveness, and Matilda informs her that she'll double check the list they'd made together while she shops. Seemingly satisfied but not entirely happy with the situation, a flash of light pulls the Gothitelle into her Pokeball and Mattie sighs quietly in relief. "I'm gonna have to make up for that," she mutters, partially to herself and partially to Mars.[break][break]

"I just received a large sum from my aunt, so I purchased a house here in Hoenn! It's completely bare though, definitely in need of some TLC. I heard Mauville was the place to buy if you've got some disposable income, so - here I am!" Mattie throws her arms out and turns on the balls of her feet, her dress flowing around in a circle as she spins. Looking around, a questioning look crosses her features. "You...live here?" She asks a bit incredulously.

A slight smile tugs at his lips when watching the interactions between the woman and her Gothitelle, the bond between them being all too obvious. It’s cute, even if in many ways it’s completely different from his relationship with his own pokémon.

But then Matilda mentions a large sum of money, and Mars can’t help but wonder what the story behind that is. Does she come from wealth, or is it perhaps some inheritance or insurance paid to her?

He decides not to ask, at least not yet.
[break][break]
”Oh? Congratulations on the house, getting a new place is always exciting. Although, as a banker I feel obligated to say I hope you’re saving some of that money and that you got a good rate on your account.” Mars smirks as if he were joking, but in fact the sentiment is all too honest, for things like money and properly investing it will always be of importance to someone like him.

Still, the questioning look in her face is not missed, and he chuckles when seeing it, his explanation coming all too nonchalantly:

”Yeah, I have a nice penthouse up in Mauville Hills. I prefer living by the beach since I have done so all my life, so I’ll probably move eventually, but it’s nice for now.”

Shock sets in as soon as she hears Mars mention accounts and interest rates. "Oh no," she whispers quietly, her face going a bit pale. "I...I should really open an account, shouldn't I?" She asks rhetorically. "It's...a lot of money." After a moment of consideration, her brow furrows. "Huh. I wonder how Fawna even came into that kind of cash." She considers it only briefly however, quickly moving on. "I should probably make a stop into a nearby bank and get that money into an account, huh?" Mattie looks up at Mars with a small smile, hoping he might give her some tips but also not wanting to bother him with shop talk. His life was probably overwhelmed with work as it was, he didn't need someone bothering him about business while he was out shopping.[break][break]

"You know, I never would've pegged you for an ocean guy," Mattie informs him. "It's really cute though. I can imagine you in some swimming trunks, a drink in your hand while you chill in a lil innertube with Cash Money floating on an inflatable lounge chair next to you." Mattie giggles at the thought, imagining Mars and his Meowth in matching sunglasses. "If you could live anywhere in all of Hoenn, where would you want to be?"

While there’s a light laugh, the comment does come from a place of concern, since doing something like that definitely isn’t safe – she would be risking losing all her money and also putting her wellbeing at risk. At least she realises as much and is asking for advice, though. Something at which he smiles.

”How about this… I’ll put you in contact with an account manager I trust and they can help you set it all up. I generally don’t deal with new accounts myself, but my employees know what they’re doing.”

The bank wouldn’t function as well as it does and be as successful as it is if they didn’t, right?

For a moment, his attention turns back to the furniture around them, a particular piece of decor catching his attention before Matilda’s comment causes him to chuckle. ”Did you not? It’s even in my name… ‘Del Mar’ means ’of the sea.’” Not like he’d expect her to know that, of course. ”Hmm… Maybe somewhere like Mossdeep or Ever Grande, but they’re too far away from Slateport to be good places for me to live. Near Dewford could work well. How about you?”

The offer of a personal account manager makes her uncomfortable for but a moment as Matilda comes to grips with the concept that she really does need one and she won't be wasting a professional's time. She nods decisively to Mars. "I trust anyone you'd suggest," she tells Mars with a trusting smile and a gentle, reassuring touch on his arm. [break][break]

Mattie's attention is caught by a sun catcher in the shop, the dancing rainbows against the walls catching her eye as she walks over to them and spins them gently with her fingers. "I don't know," she tells Mars. "I haven't been in Hoenn long enough to know where exactly I would want to settle down." She turns and looks back at him with that same sweet smile. "I find that people make a place more of a home than a certain location, if I'm being perfectly honest." Giving the sun catcher one more twist, she steps lightheartedly over to the furniture Mars is eyeing.
