Imagine surviving a whole damn apocalypse and then immediately getting annoyed because you can’t find your winter clothes.

To be fair, it had been shortly before Meteno’s “arrival” that Mars had moved about half of his wardrobe to his home in Sootopolis, and he had been so busy that most of it had still been neatly packed in boxes. Alas, apparently Kyurem had decided that he would be in need of his parka and snow boots this year despite having no plans to visit his lake chalet near Snowpoint.

The place he visits is much different.

What had once been the grasslands of Oldale Town is now coated in heavy layers of snow, and encased in ice that seems incapable of melting lie the petrified corpses of pokémon. Unfortunate, yet the banker still calmly wanders among these gelid statues as if he were in search of something, and by his side, leaving heavy footprints upon the snow, walks a large Persian. Dollar.

Maybe she could hear way they choked against the rising bile in their throat, but the Delibird didn't hesitate to return to their side. They quickly scooped their companion into their arms, counting breaths as they moved away from the scene.

They weren't alone in this impromptu cemetery, however, as they soon approached another pair of figures marching through the snow.

He had not expected to run into someone else in Kyurem’s frozen graveyard, but given the penchant of Hoenn’s population for going to places where they probably shouldn’t go (yes, Mars knows he’s one of them too), he probably should have seen it coming.

He also should have known that it would be Locke Jamison.

”Locke, De-De. Doing deliveries? You’ll catch a cold dressed like that.” He smiles in greeting, despite the fact that in his words there’s actually genuine concern for the wellbeing of the postman. Somewhere along the way, through all the dangers they had lived through together, he had grown to consider Locke to be a friend.

Shame their encounter is interrupted by an approaching pokémon…

Small and grey, it waddles towards them, looking at the pair of strangers and their pokémon with wide yellow eyes – unafraid. Here’s another thing Mars had not expected.

”...A Frigibax? In Hoenn?” This doesn’t seem right. Aren’t Paldean pokémon rare in most regions? He has never seen one here before, and perhaps this is why he kneels down on the snow, offering a hand to the small dragon he assumes must be lost.

Does it have to do with how Hoenn changed after the Primal Points were fired or is it really just that this Frigibax is lost?

Whatever the case, it seems friendly enough, and it even bumps its head against Mars’ hand when he reaches for it… Until it sees something in the distance, that is, and its yellow eyes grow wide – panicked. In a rush, it waddles over to hide behind Locke’s Delibird, and it’s then that Mars sees it: a Doublade flying straight towards them, its METAL SOUND ringing through the chill air.

Mars remains calm through it all. He whistles one short note, and in response, the Persian acts without a second thought. It jumps forward, PROTECTING them from the Doublade’s attack before retaliating with swift and effective HIDDEN POWER.

The banker stands, chucks a Luxury Ball towards the Doublade, brushes snow off his clothes, and sighs.
[break][break]
”As I was saying, you’ll catch a cold.”
[break][break]
At least the Frigibax comes out from hiding once the hostile pokémon is dealt with.

The Frigibax suddenly hid itself behind De-De, who looked at it with a confused tilt of her head. Before Locke could get a chance to inspect the panicked Pokemon closer, a sharp whistling in the air brought his attention to the business end of a fast-approaching Doublade.

"Not again!" he cried, dropping to the snow just as Martain's Persian sailed overhead to meet his attacker.

The fight was over quickly, with barely even a comment from the CEO-who was still clinging to the topic of his clothing like a nagging mother.

"Somehow I think the cold is the least of my worries…" they whined from where they were still lying flat on the ground.

[break][break]

The snow Growled beneath the courier, revealing an annoyed and drowsy-looking Glaceon as they quickly sat upright. It turned around and Double Kicked at them, which was swiftly Countered by a hefty swing of De-De's tail, followed by a Rapid Spin that sent the ice-type flying away.

Locke hurried to their feet while rooting around for an empty Pokéball, which they frantically tossed at the other Pokémon before it could recover.

When the snow starts growling, revealing a Glaceon that swiftly kicks Locke, Mars does no more than watch. See, he may care about the courier, be concerned about them and all, but as he sees it, a pokémon is something that can easily be dealt with, while the cold weather is not. Sure, Mars knows just how dangerous a Glaceon can be: it had been his first pokémon and his own Melpomene can be vicious when the situation demands it. But still! De-de clearly has this handled, doesn’t she?

And so is that the situation is dealt with, and when Locke calls the Glaceon ‘case in point’, Mars looks at him as if having no idea what he means. He just sighs, unzipping his jacket and reaching into its pockets to retrieve his wallet, phone, keys, and whatever else there might be.

”Here, I have a sweater anyway.” The jacket is offered just like that. It’s probably too big, but at least it’s not heavy, and it should keep Locke warm enough if he were to decide to take it.

While all this happens, the Frigibax’s attention is drawn towards another nearby pokémon, this time not fearful but curious. It’s no more than a small Bergmite, after all, and soon enough the pair of ice types seem to be getting along. Dollar stays by Mars’ side through it all, watching the scene with curiosity.

For a few moments, Locke just stared at Martin's hand.

It was a nice jacket-he could picture Nana tutting at the price tag, then turning to the clearance rack for one that leaked down and wouldn't last half as long. It almost seemed wrong for him to take, like it couldn't possibly belong to him.

But he'd been taught not to look a gift Ponyta in the mouth, so he accepted the offering with a mumbled "Thanks," stamping down the bitterness at seeing such a luxury offered up as though it weren't evidence of the impossible distance between them.

Eris Halla's words rang in the back of Locke's mind as they shrugged the jacket-every bit as warm as they'd always imagined-overtop of their own.
