In the grand tradition of Murphy’s Law, anything that can go wrong does go wrong. He had come here to disconnect and be alone, and yet he had run into DEREK HOFFMAN not long after stepping onto the island. He had wanted to relax, and yet they’re immediately under attack.

A Tyrantrum.

While the ranger’s companion pokémon cowers in fear, the banker just sighs, watching Derek’s quick actions and the way his Blissey tosses EGG BOMBS towards the treeline. A decent plan.

The thing with wild pokémon is that most can be scared away, even the larger and more aggressive ones. They spend every single day of their lives fighting for their survival, and while something like a Tyrantrum has little to fear, it does not actively seek discomfort either.

”You might want to cover your ears.”

The warning is simple, and Mars does not wait before whistling two short notes to which the Noivern flying overhead responds accordingly. From its open maw, a piercing, loud, and oh so painfully powerful BOOMBURST is sang as a shriek, and if the EGG BOMBS hadn’t been enough to cause the wild pokémon hiding in the area to flee deeper into the island, this sure is.

Yet, that’s not all the Noivern does, for the sound is immediately followed by a DRAGON PULSE that strikes the trees from up above. That would hurt, if this really is a Tyrantrum.

The conversation flows just as whiskey is poured into John glass time and again, no topic overstaying its welcome. With the mention of Luminous City, the office worker actually manages to get a light laugh out of his boss, which he then follows by shaking his head and downing what’s left on his gin. He doesn’t order a second glass just yet.

”Younger” Mars corrects in his mind, although approaching his thirties certainly manages to make him feel as if his youthful days are over sometimes, especially considering the health complications he had dealt with last year. Most people aren’t aware of that. To most, he may just live the perfect life, as if they were unaware of how packed his schedule always is and what kind of tolls this takes on him.

”Luminous is nice, though. I’ve been meaning to find the time to go sometime now that we can finally travel again.” There’s a slight smile at that, since while business trips do take Mars all over the world, the reason he wants to go back to Kalos has nothing to do with that. BARNABY FINCH would probably want to kill him if he focused on work during one of their trips together, especially one to his hometown.

The mountain is full of wild pokemon, even now. Most either don’t care for his presence or do what they can to avoid him entirely, but on occasion, some out there are particularly territorial or prone to mischief. In this case, it’s a Mr Rime, of all things.

It’s the Unown that sees it standing in wait, hidden up ahead. A warning comes through their psychic link, and Mars knows to avoid it.

Except that… well… he’s in no mood to avoid things today.
[break][break]
Instead, he whistles one short note as he runs, causing the Noivern to come swooping down upon the Mr Rime. A battle ensues, and as this occurs, Mars keeps on jogging down the same path.

There’s a certain calm to these streets at night. The same kind of streets that would be so terribly busy during the day. While most people sleep, he walks under dim lights, noticing the way some of them flicker on occasion, causing the creatures that lurk in the shadows to stir.

One of them is a stray Houndour, much like the one stands by blue murtagh. This one, however, isn’t satisfied with merely growling at Dollar; it steps closer, defensive, and as a result, the Persian growls right back at it, his ears flicking back. Only when Mars clicks his tongue does Dollar attack, emitting a WATER PULSE that drenches the flaming pup. Growling turns to whimpers soon enough, and a Luxury Ball silences them when attempting to capture the Houndour in its confines.

”Nothing.” Says Mars as if nothing had just happened, nonchalance marking both his tone and attitude. Yet, where there is nonchalance, there is also the sharpness to his golden gaze – never a man to lower his guard. ”You did well out there, that’s all.”

He keeps on walking, taking the Luxury Ball when Dollar brings it back.

As it often seems to happen when walking through Hoenn, the appearance of wild pokémon after wild pokémon interrupts the natural flow of their conversation.

While Hazel’s pokémon swiftly deals with a Mismagius that stirs up MAGICAL LEAVES, Xero spots a Dusclops among the trees, not even needing to point towards it to call The Architect’s attention to it. The Unown opens their psychic link, and through it, Mars sees.

He closes his eyes for a second, taking a breath and then looking down at the Unown itself. The psychic link returns to its usual passive state.

Not now.
[break][break]
”That much is true.” A chuckle, Mars clearly being amused by his companion’s comment. ”Hoenn is one of the oddest places I’ve ever been.”

The options available at this bar aren’t exactly his favourite, but they’ll do just fine, won’t they? A crisp flavour, the taste of juniper berries… they’re things that bring a certain comfort to him. ”I used to dream of doing the gym circuit when I was a kid back at Kalos. It’s never too late, though.”

He is living proof of that, like many others. After all, businessman as he may be, Martín del Mar has also challenged both minor and major gyms alike in his time in Hoenn, and he has quite the collection of badges. It’s not rare for footage of his battles to be shown during interviews and news reports, but honestly, while they do make for good publicity, that has never been the real intention behind those challenges.

”To good places where to spend our time.” He smirks, raising his glass to meet John’s toast. Unlike him, Mars takes a calm and measured sip, nursing his drink and seeming to be in no rush to finish it – as if to savour every last drop.

Of course it is, because Slateport isn’t marked by death, loss, and tragedy. No memories of Slateport haunt his dreams and steal away his sleep. Not yet, at least.

Perhaps it’s because Mars knows it better than most people; he knows just how bad things can be. Hoenn had nearly killed him more than once, it had tried to take from him time and again, he had had made plenty of sacrifices to get to where he is, and as a result, Hoenn had also given. Most people are not aware of most of it, of course, they have no idea, and he sure as hell intends to keep it that way. P.O.G Bank’s CEO is just a rich man who must be insane to have all that wealth and still choose to come to such a chaotic region and try to help it be better. The philanthropist.

”Most people choose to move away from their hometown at some point or another. Even more so with everything Slateport has been through… You may have some admirable resilience, John.” The comment is honest, yet it is an amusement smirk that tugs at his lips, because there’s an undeniably dissonance between the chaos of the region and john nelson’s general demeanour.

It is, once again, time to search for more Unown.

The usual time, the usual place, just as it has happened every single week for over a year now.

This time, Mars is more focused on jogging than anything else, but that’s due to the fact that he knows well that if his Unown were to spot another of its kind, it would psychically alert him – they always have.

It’s his Unown-Q this time.

It pleasantly levitates ahead, and up above, over the treetops, a Noivern of teal-coloured scales has been placed in charge of having an aerial view of the summit. Surely with this many eyes watching for Unown, they’ll find one, right?

He has always seen importance in understanding people, and right here, right now, at this bar, both the actions and words of john nelson say a lot of who he is as a person. It’s intriguing, really. A glimpse into the mind of the ordinary, everyday man. And even one who is his employee, at that!

It’s the understatement of the century.

A giant, invisible barrier had surrounded Hoenn for months, preventing people (and thus also any items) from getting into the region or out. There had been a supply shortage, prices had skyrocketed, and when working at a bank, the repercussions of such events are felt heavily. On top of all of that, a damn meteor had been enroute to kill them all, sent their way by interdimensional assassins who wish to see Hoenn destroyed. Needless to say, when people think they’re about to die, they can get pretty damn reckless with their finances.

Everyone at P.O.G Bank had been working their assess off to help maintain even a semblance of stability in this chaotic region. It’s something Mars is actually thankful for.

The truth of the matter is that there’s only one reason why Martín del Mar would go to lower district bars like Zev Harcourt’s Howling at the Moon and virgil roach’s Ritual, and that reason is not one he can share with the man who bumps into him and soon breaks into nervous apologies.

It had been under blond disguise that he had been watching the matches: Tuesday, known Team Rocket contact. Yet, once it was all said and done with, once his business by the ring had concluded, the disguise had been abandoned quickly enough, and out here, in the outskirts of Slateport’s lower district, it’s Martín del Mar that calmly walks with his usual Persian by his side.

Granted, he’s dressed much more casually than what he normally would, but there’s a certain comfort in the way that he walks through the lower district’s streets – perhaps a result of frequenting them or perhaps a result of sheer confidence.

Whatever the answer may be, it’s the Persian that notices blue murtagh first.

The crimson eyes of the large feline fix on her, and as if both a greeting and a way to warn his master, he lets out a low prusten. Mars looks at her then, his own eyes golden.

”Oh. You’re one of the fighters, aren’t you?”

He’s casual, but he knows the answer to the question. After all, he had seen her, and more than that, as an underboss he’s well aware of which Rocket members are counted among the regular participants.

There was a wink, and there was also something akin to a wave, and at that moment, if only for a second, Tuesday smirked just so slightly – too slightly and too passingly for fern delaney to notice. Everything was put into motion then, and instead of simply staying on the boat and watching from afar (for that would have been entirely too suspicious if someone were to notice him), he TELEPORTED as well.

The house was quiet, as most houses are at night. Only a dim light can be seen coming out of a window; a television left on in the living room which may perhaps serve as a sign that someone is still awake… or a sign that they fell asleep watching their favourite late night show.

There were no signs of any particular security systems… except perhaps for the amount of extremely squeaky toys littering the front lawn. Some were kids toys and some were clearly meant for pokémon.
