He had not come to this bar to talk about the bank, much less his employees, but oftentimes Mars finds that fate has quite a lot of unexpected things in store, and tonight, running into john nelson had been in that list. The conversation also hasn’t gone exactly as he’d expect, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. He’s enjoying it – even when John shows clear trepidation in talking about those working in his department.

”Everyone starts off somewhere. They’ll do well with you to guide them.” His tone is as calm as it is full of certainty, perhaps purposefully intending to both show how much he believes in his employees and set an expectation. Even in this casual setting, when off the clock and drinking, Martín del Mar chooses his words carefully.

It’s then that he reaches into the inner pocket of his suit jacket, brushing past the elegant tie pin that bears an ever-so-recognizable keystone – he always wears it, perhaps as a sign for others, perhaps as a warning, or perhaps because Hoenn is a dangerous place and having pokémon ready to mega evolve at a moment’s notice is necessary. The keystone does not activate tonight, though. Instead, he retrieves his wallet.

Mars had told himself this wouldn’t happen again, that feelings like these are a risk, and no one he cares for should ever be put in the same danger he had once put her, yet it had still happened. The feelings are there and the dangers are as well, and as much as he had thought he could wait until he was sure Barnaby would be safe, the world had worked against them. And yet he still has no regrets.

”Kalos, hm?” The place where he had spent the happiest years of his childhood. The place where Barnaby had spent his life. The answer is obvious, for it too is something he had wanted for a long time. So, he takes Barnaby’s hand, a thumb gently tracing circles on its back. ”I’d really like that. There’s things I want to show you too.”

He doesn’t bother with thinking of the specifics: on if this will mean meeting Barnaby’s family or what he will say if they end up stopping by Ambrette Town. There’s no point in thinking about all that just yet. All that matters is this moment.

Perhaps that’s why his next words are whispered to Barnaby’s ear, coming in company with gentle kiss on his cheek:

For a long time, he had been alone. There had been no one he could trust, no one he could rely on, and no one who would stand by his side. On his own, he had survived. He had pushed forward despite all the horrors life had thrown his way. The problem is that just surviving will never be enough for Mars.

Prideful as he is, the realisation that he’d need to rely on others had been a bitter pill, yet every step of the way, he had carefully selected them: those he’d need by his side to achieve his every goal. Even when it had meant joining Team Rocket. A deal with the devil, a choice between the lesser of two evils, all because he had deemed their resources as necessary in order to achieve the one thing that had truly pushed him to come to Hoenn.

A smile finds its way to Mars’ lips, as if mirroring that of john nelson.

”It’s not one particular trait, and it has nothing to do with personality or anything. You could be the most sour, apathetic asshole, but as long as you have skills, you have value.” That much is an admittance. He could go on about how important it is for someone to be passionate and driven and all the things he had said about his own success, but the truth is that a company like POG Bank is run like clockwork, and that means that every cog has its valuable function.

”It could be something that seems as simple as properly understanding your job or knowing how to talk to people. You’d be surprised how rare skills like those can actually be.” There’s a soft chuckle, and at last, he drinks: one short sip, measured and enjoyed to the fullest degree. ”Don’t tell the others that they can start acting like assholes, though. A good workplace atmosphere is important too.”

They have not-so-affectionately dubbed it The Silent Icelands, and it’s silently that the pokémon trapped in its ice adorned the snowy fields as if life-like statues. There’s no life let in them, though.

Some people find it disturbing, others are capable of ignoring their presence in favour of enjoying the blessing that is snow in this tropical region, and Martín del Mar… Well, he’s here because he has work to do. Of course. He always has something to do. Always up to something.

He walks through the icelands, paying just as much attention to his surroundings as the Unown that floats by his side. An Unown-?. The same one that had joined him for the mission to Mount Pyre.

It’s this Unown that first notices Ashley Shepard and his pokémon, showing such a sight to Mars through the psychic link that exists between Unown and avatar. He had not intended to run into any of his Rocket underlings at a place like this, but Mars is not one to waste an opportunity, especially when it's someone he's been meaning to find the time to talk to.

He can no longer take most of his usual paths: the rift is in the way. Mount Pyre has changed. So, instead, Mars stops soon before the summit and takes a turn, circling around the less frequented sides of Mount Pyre and making his way down towards the ocean.

Jogging downhill isn’t as good as jogging up a mountain, but he’ll take what he can get, and in the end, it’s not like any of this is permanent. He’ll eventually find another path to take, rift or no rift. Mars values his routine.

When he passes by a Trevenant, he pays it no mind, continuing down to the beach.

Imagine surviving a whole damn apocalypse and then immediately getting annoyed because you can’t find your winter clothes.

To be fair, it had been shortly before Meteno’s “arrival” that Mars had moved about half of his wardrobe to his home in Sootopolis, and he had been so busy that most of it had still been neatly packed in boxes. Alas, apparently Kyurem had decided that he would be in need of his parka and snow boots this year despite having no plans to visit his lake chalet near Snowpoint.

The place he visits is much different.

What had once been the grasslands of Oldale Town is now coated in heavy layers of snow, and encased in ice that seems incapable of melting lie the petrified corpses of pokémon. Unfortunate, yet the banker still calmly wanders among these gelid statues as if he were in search of something, and by his side, leaving heavy footprints upon the snow, walks a large Persian. Dollar.

What Mars won’t tell someone like john nelson is that as much as business is his passion in life, he often regrets not pursuing a degree in science as well. There’s nothing he despises more than his own lack of knowledge and understanding about certain things, it frustrates him to no end, and as a result, he’s constantly learning – whenever he has the time, even if it’s just by listening to an audiobook while going for a run.

Revealing the supposed secrets to his success is something he doesn’t mind as much, especially since it’s the sort of thing he often speaks of in interviews and that can be found in his own biography.

There’s no real secret to it.
[break][break]
And yet, ever one to be fond of dramatism, he leans in as well, as if he truly were about to tell John something most of the world could never even guess. He even lowers his voice, a playful smirk dancing at his lips:

”Some people will tell you it’s talent, and sure, that plays its part, but most of all it’s about working hard. Dedication, passion, drive… you can’t lose those things or you’re doomed. You have to be willing to do what it takes and never give up, no matter how wrong things go sometimes or how many curveballs life throws your way. There’s fire in every word, akin to that lit in his golden gaze. It's as if Martín del Mar were a man who faces everything in life as if it were a battle for him to win. Perhaps that’s why he had been given the nickname Mars long ago, after the Lord of Wars.

But, how is a war won?

”The most important thing, though, above all, is realising that no matter how smart, talented, or hardworking you are, you’ll never get anywhere all on your own.” His glass is raised slightly at that, as if he were about to make a toast. ”To be successful you need to network and to learn how to choose your allies. You need contacts, and you also need hardworking people who are willing to make your vision come to life. That’s why people like you are important, John. I may come up with ideas and lead, but POG Bank would be nowhere without its employees.”

Ah, nothing like apocalyptic threats to bring winter to Hoenn.

Frost fills the air and a heavy blanket of snow coats the ground, yet its with calm and ease that Mars walks towards the areas where this year's Snowboy Showdown will take place. He had taken part in last year's event, so why not make it a bit of a tradition, since that's clearly the intent? Plus, our good and wonderful P.O.G Bank CEO loves supporting his friends, and it's luka chêne who is among the organizers.

He gives Luka a smile and a wave when he sees her, and in turn, the small, champagne-coloured Vulpix by his side barks excitedly, wagging its fluffy tails. Usually, Mars would be accompanied by one of the bank's Meowth or Persian for such public events, but how could he deny his dear Vulpix a chance to play in the snow? BARNABY FINCH should be proud. He even went as far as putting the Vulpix a cute Christmas sweater and everything (or, well, as cute as a Christmas sweater can be).

He only pauses when he hears an all too familiar meow, one that comes with images shown to him by the Unown-Q: a small Espurr, wandering alone and probably lost, it clearly hasn't eaten in days, it's dirty, and afraid.

He reaches for his belt, feeling the presence of an empty Luxury Ball. He could catch it. He could help it. He could raise it.

Espurr are adorable and he likes them a lot, but he already has a lot of them. This one will probably be weak, judging by its condition. Useless.

In the world of business, in those high circles to which only the most successful have access to, words like young are often used as an insult. Young, foolish, immature, just a kid who has no idea what he’s doing… Martín del Mar has heard it all before. Technology is full of wonders, that much is true, and Mars will always be appreciative of just how much they can get it to do. But, making that tech sentient? Purposefully unshackled AIs? Not his thing, thank you very much. He prefers tech he can fully control.

Still, Lulu has a point: the Cloud is full of Porygon. It’s made of data too, and it’s clear that Maldacena had at least used the Virtual Pokémon to some extent within cyberspace – even if just as funny-looking guard dogs.
