”Hmm… Yeah, that might be a good idea.” Mars says in response to Lex’s suggestion, because while Xanthos may have a relatively mild temperament and while he may be obedient, the underboss is also extremely aware that they don’t exactly know what they’re doing here.

At least they have instructions, though! And it’s not like he had zero experience with all of this. He has witnessed the process many times before, and he also has poked and prodded pokémon before (admittedly being more aligned with Lex’s approach than that of a biologist).

Ironically, it all goes well at first, but after the first needle, Xanthos expects what’s to come, and he clearly doesn’t have the patience to deal with more of all of that. He lets out a piercing shriek, smacking one of the steel tables with his tail and knocking it down with force. The sound of steel loudly meeting the lab floor rings through the lab.

The Hatchery, long gone as it may be, is a place that fills Mars with unease. The more they learn about the strange genetic mutations of the pokémon born from the hatchery’s eggs, the more questions that rise within him. Was the Infinity Energy surge really the only thing to blame for the birth of these Illumina pokémon, those that know Light of Ruin, and everything else? If so, how come they haven’t been able to replicate the results? What did those people do to the eggs? And most important of all: who had been behind it?

He has his suspicions, of course, but he won’t share them with Johanna Joy without a reason.

Instead, he simply smiles, gently scratching under the chin of the Dragapult.

”Xanthos is one of them.” He clarifies for Johanna’s sake. ”There’s a lot of other different pokémon, though.”

Those that can use Shadow moves, Light of Ruin, purification, and of course, those infected with Pokérus. Hell, Mars had even learned that distortion pokémon and variants had been born from some hatchery eggs.

This is supposed to be a haunted house of sorts, and everyone knows that when stepping into a graveyard in a haunted house, zombies are to be expected – it’s the logical and obvious “scary thing” to appear in places like those.

Mars, however, had forgotten this.

Mars had been so preoccupied with his own grim reminiscing while wandering amongst tombstones that he hadn’t noticed the hands until one firmly grabbed onto his ankle.

Instead of teleporting, instead of yanking his foot away, he kicks at the offending arm as hard as possible, temporarily forgetting that these might be no more than paid actors. Later on he’ll wonder if those were animatronic or if he actually gave someone a fracture, he’s much more preoccupied with not getting pulled down towards the ground.

A chill runs down his spine at the thought of it. He had long since conquered the claustrophobia that had haunted his childhood self, but the memories of that fear and what had caused it are still vivid. Perhaps that's why the instinct of teleporting doesn't come to him.

He steps onto a stone memorial, both to get away from the hands and to get a better look at the cemetery. He sees an open grave.

For a few moments, they walk without any interruptions, allowing Mars to focus on sounds like the rustling of leaves with the wind and also that of the incredibly heavy steps of his Electivire. Were it an even slightly warmer day, it’d probably leave huge footprints behind.

Mars makes a mental note on that. He has always favoured stealth, and a pokémon like an Electivire is anything but.

The Klink that approaches them isn’t very stealthy either, given the loud sound of its gears.

Quick to react, he whistles once more, leaving his Electivire to KICK the steel type so it can be caught in a Safari Ball.

Lights suddenly flash right in front of the Unown, and Mars winces in discomfort. It’s instinctively that the symbol is called back, temporarily severing their psychic connection so he won’t have to deal with the lights.

When he looks up to the spot where the Unown had been, the culprit is clear: a wild Beheeyem.

Mars sighs.

He’ll need to keep practising so that things like those don’t startle him. Not getting headaches when using too many Unown would also be nice.

There’s much left to be done, but for now, he decides to leave Mount Pyre.

It’s not exactly the best day for a hike, but when the world is supposed to end in about two weeks' time, you take what you can get, right?

The weather is mild. A little windy, but not too bad… except for the dark clouds that loom in the horizon, bringing threats of rain upon Route 115. That’s okay, Mars can deal with that.

See, it had occurred to him that despite the many times he had visited Meteor Falls, he had never walked the hike from the cavern to Rustboro City. So, that’s what he’s doing now, because who knows what may happen when the meteorite gets closer. For all he knows, Hoenn might be destroyed, and if it isn’t, it might be drastically change to the point that it’s unrecognisable.

So, here he is, walking up a path with his Dragapult floating by his side – enjoying Hoenn for what it is.

It’s the underboss that first becomes aware of the presence of the bird-of-prey, having turned towards the trees due to feeling observed. Funny how that works, right? He locks eyes with the wild pokémon, yet it does not attack.

Mars doesn’t tell the Unown to attack either, simply choosing to let the bird be.

Mars knows as much about technology as the next guy, but it’s not like he’s a genius hacker or anything. A man can only be so skilled, right? It’s why he pays people like ambrose orion to deal with things like those for him. However right here, right now, it’s only him and Melody Miro, and they sure don’t have the time to sit around and wait for I.T to show up. So, naturally, the Porygon will be dealt with as they best know how.

He sure could do without Cobalion’s scorn, though.

An eyebrow is raised in response to the Sword of Justice’s attitude, but Mars quickly decides to simply brush it off with a laugh. He gives a short whistle as a command for his Rotom, and one more Porygon is disabled by a DISCHARGE in the middle of shooting their TRI-ATTACK. Lights collide against Cobalion’s barrier, causing spikes to shoot out towards the Virtual Pokémon.

SURVEY #1
"WHAT'S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? WHY? IF YOU DIED RIGHT NOW, WOULD YOU REGRET ANYTHING?"

Bucket lists are on everyone's mind right now, aren't they? I'd say base jumping.

As for regrets, I have unfinished business. There's too much left to do for me to die just yet.

"WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING OR ACCESSORY, OR WHAT DO YOU WEAR THE MOST OFTEN?"

That would depend. Due to my line of work, I generally wear suits, making my keystone tie pin is an irreplaceable accessory. Chronograph watches are a staple of any outfit of mine, suit or not – it's important to be precise about time. Lastly, I never leave my home without the two rings I wear as pendants, but most people never see those.

"IF THE ULTRA BEASTS INVADE HOENN AGAIN, WHAT WOULD YOU DO, OR WHICH ULTRA BEAST IS YOUR FAVORITE AND WHY?"

Not much to do other than fight them, right? They're really strong, so I guess I'd also try to catch one, but everyone knows you need a Beast Ball for that.

BLACEPHALON is probably my favourite. Katherine Fairburne has a pretty cool one. What can I say, I like fireworks.

Few things in this world are worse than the grief of losing someone we love, but in the end, there's nothing we can do other than keep on living.

I have never grieved the loss of a pokémon. Most are replaceable.

Familiar question. I like sailing and diving, in part because they remind me of times spent with my father before he passed away.

There's nothing more attractive than confidence. Sure, physical attributes play a part, and beauty will always have aesthetic appeal, but beautiful or not, the way someone carries themself can make all the difference.

"WHAT IS YOUR PREFERRED ENVIRONMENT? IS IT A LIBRARY WITH WHITE NOISE OF PAGES FLIPPING? A NOISY PARTY? THE GREAT OUTDOORS? WHY?"

I love a good party as much as the next guy, but by the ocean is where I feel the most at home.

Probably something like PSYCHIC/STEEL. It just feels right.

When someone hurts those who matters to me. I will admit I used to have what some would call "anger issues", and it has taken me a long time to learn to control those emotions. Control is primordial, no matter how enraged. People can act stupidly when blinded by rage.

"WHAT SORT OF SCENTS ARE YOU FOND OF? DO ANY SCENTS REMIND YOU OF ANY MEMORIES?"

Orange, cedarwood, bergamot, and spearmint are my own aromas of choice.

The scent of the sea, that of hyacinth, vetiver, morning dew, beer, and petrichor all bring back fond memories.

I dislike the scent of cigars and also that of roses. These days, lavender and sandalwood have become my favourites.

Orange, cedarwood, bergamot, and spearmint - Mars' own cologne
Sea brine - reminds him of his childhood, Ambrette Town, and Canalave City
Hyacinth and vetiver - reminds him his late wife (her perfume)
Morning Dew - reminds him of his morning jogs
Cheap Beer - reminds him of fun has at university, when he was free from his family's control for the first time
Petrichor - reminds him of high school soccer practice with Sinnoh's weather
Cigars - associates it to his grandfather
Roses - associates to to his grandmother
Lavender and sandalwood - BARNABY FINCH's cologne

Pokémon make for great assets, most of them can be trained to become some of the most useful tools in the world – especially as weapons.

There's only a few I'd call my companions.

I dream of a better world. A world where I have defeated everything that stands against me and there can finally be peace.

Our strength is limited by the extent of our own imagination. I know – perhaps much better than most people – that being able to imagine things can make all the difference.
